Kerry Wood HR in Game 7 of 2003 NLCS

It might be one of the greatest home runs in Cubs history. It's just a shame it meant nothing in the end. But at the time, Kerry Wood's game-tying, two-run homer off Mark Redman in the second inning meant everything. Wood had put the Cubs in a 3-0 hole after one inning. Then, with two outs, a run in and a man on in the second, Wood worked the count full before blasting a pitch into the left-field bleachers. Moises Alou homered in the third to give the Cubs a 5-3 lead they eventually blew. But Wood's homer was special. Thom Brennaman said it was the first homer by a pitcher in an LCS since the Cubs' Rick Sutcliffe in 1984. Plus, it woke up the crowd (listen to the reaction on multiple replays) and put the Cubs back in the game. I'll post the game in its entirety. Yet Joe Buck does the same thing and he's somehow "monotone and boring." Not to mention he'd also probably be criticized and framed as "smarmy and smug" if it was him saying the line "Kerry Wood plays Longball" instead of Thom Brennaman.

Same! Personally, the 2003 Chicago Cubs is my favorite team. I was so depressed they didn’t make it to the World Series. I would have been satisfied with just a Pennant.

I've lived by Wrigley since 1988 and have heard many game winners including the 2015 Cubs....This was by far the loudest I've ever heard the crowd cheer.

When a batter stands there at the plate admiring his ball go over the fence, or runs the bases at a snails pace and fists pumping or whatever... it's a good way to get you or your teammate a 95mph high & tight fastball... tailing in!! So of course a pitcher would be a gigantic hypocrite if he himself did that.

The 2003 Cubs were the best team the Cubs had in the past 20 years to not win the series. They had such a dominating lineup and rotation, far better on paper than the 2016 club. And this coming from a Cards fan.

Maybe it's just me, but I really think the atmosphere around THIS Cubs team in 2003, their magical playoff run, and the general feeling around the team was bigger and better than in 2016. It sounds odd since they finally won the World Series, but the pure emotion was INSANE back then.

I agree. More guys who had been around longer. I didn't have any attachment to the players in 2016. The pitching staff was all rentals and our lineup was so young I hadn't even decided if I liked them.

Shane 30....that is a crock. I just watched a video, where Jim Maloney pitched a 10 inning no-hitter, throwing 187 pitches in 1965. And Maloney had a fine, long career. Pitch count is BS!!! The only reason for a pitch count is so that managers HAVE to go to the bullpen, so pitchers that are making millions of dollars are not sitting in the bullpen non-stop. That is why there are so many crap pitchers, with terrible ERA/WHIP still pitching in MLB. It is a joke.

I know that the Cubs almost never retire a jersey that isn't a HoF'mer (they made an exception with Santo prior to being inducted into the hall) but Kerry seriously deserves it. There are very few Cubs players that gave us such great memories as Kid K. The 20 K game. The complete domination of the Braves in the NLDS to lead the Cubs to their first playoff series victory in 95 years. This home run right here. And no only that, but he was and is a true role model, a true model citizen, a man who never cheated in a game of cheaters. A man who bleeds Cubbie Blue to this today. Whenever there is a Cubs gather and Kerry is announced the crowd goes ballistic and they always shout "Kerry Kerry Kerry'. He was just.... special. A specimen that we will never see again. Retire #34 Mr. Rickets. There will never, ever, ever be another.

I remember this game like it was yesterday. Another broken hearted Cub fan-my son- who got interested in the baseball for the first time and became a Cubs fan that year. Thank heaven we got to watch them win the World Series in 2016.

If you watch the stands/fans from 2:31-2:34 ..... just, wow. I'm a lifelong Cub fan and I can tell you that's THE most berzerk the place has ever gone. I was in front of my living room t.v. at that moment, and I went nuts too. I did about 7 vertical jumps, 3 feet in the air, screaming, and ran out the front door .... lol. Regardless of the game's outcome, that was a moment for the ages. :)

Wrigley and the crowds are different. Happy they won the Series and hope for more, but I'm glad I got to see Wrigley before the billboards. Glad I didn't have to pay $100 for a terrace box seat to see Tuffy Rhodes hit three home runs. Or pay $99 for a bleacher seat to see a woman's nose broken by a Sammy Sosa home run. The price of winning a WS is high. Compared to 2017, 2003 is definitely "back in the day."

Thanks for making my point. Lee Elia couldn't tell today's fans to get a job because you guys have to have at least one to afford the tickets. The income level of people in Wrigley have changed over the years, you've seen it yourself. They are no less passionate, as we saw in the stands at the NLDS, NLCS and WS. But then I never said they were. YOU made that leap. And that guy was right: The pre-'84 crowd was just as different from the crowds in the '90s and the 2003 fans. The pre-'84 folks probably couldn't believe what we/they paid for tickets (I had stopped going after '98). That's why I said I was glad I got to see the place before 2017's $100 bleacher seats. That's the point I was making. I'm happy you guys can afford the prices because you helped make a WS possible. Thanks. It must have been an amazing experience. But you need to calm down with the "fake nostalgia" and "real fans" talk. Putting words in someone's mouth is dishonest.

I was across the street at Cubby Bear bar from Wrigley for this game and when I tell you you could FEEL the vibration coming from the park across the street. It was rumbling like an earthquake. I’ve never heard a louder crowd pop since this tbh.

I was 12 when this happened. I remember my mom, dad, and I watching it on TV. The moment he hit the home run we all went crazy. I really thought we were going to the World Series after that home run. That was an amazing year and quite honestly one of the best in my life. The Cub fan in me will never leave. True Blue all the way. #CubsFanForever

Joey, I'd agree with Wood, but the way Prior threw, he was never going to last long without a career threatening injury. But as far as being stud pitchers for a short time, they were both awesome.

Absolutely, and the Cubs would have at the very least won the pennant and most likely a world series (or two). A lot of Cubs fans hate Jim Hendry but imo he did a fantastic job building a ball club and it just so happened that two of his three aces (the other being Zambrano) couldn't stay healthy. That Cubs team will always be the "what could have been", must like the 69 team and the 84 team.

Both guys got hurt because of the arrogance. It was, for both, their pitching motions that kept getting them injured. Sure Prior needed to learn how to run bases, bad little league coach I guess, but they both kept screwing up their throwing arms/shoulders because they threw across their bodies and refused to change their motions when pitching coach after pitching coach explained to them what was the issue. I used to call them the M*A*S*H teammates.

Aramis was on fire, and our pitch hitters (Simon/Glanville) were all set to along with our Pitching. All pieces were set ... can’t forget our veterans in Lofton and Karos All good now tho! 2016 happened :)

Big Pudge Rodriguez fan here since I was a kid in the 90s. Both ‘01 & ‘03 were amazing years in baseball for me. But this NLCS was as nail bitting as it gets. Was still a lot more exciting than the World Series itself that year in my opinion. Thankful to have grown up with baseball the years I did ⚾️ 🖤

this 2003 team had that underdog, us against the world charm to it. the 2016 team was a bunch of high priced mercenaries(except for bryant of course) and it still took an epic choke job from the indians to get it done

@@MrDust1981 Mercenaries? Infield was Bryant, Russell, Baez, and Rizzo...3 dudes out of the farm system, and one guy that was brought on from the Padres for nothing. Behind the plate was David Ross (journeyman catcher) and Wilson Contreras (farm system). There were a few big $$ pieces on that team...especially with the pitching staff, but you have your head up your ass if you think that team was a "bunch of high priced mercenaries".

The overwhelming majority of that offense was either homegrown, or relatively cheap. I also recognized that the pitching staff was loaded and all bought and paid for. I also forgot to mention Almora Jr, Schwarber, and Hendricks who were all key components to that run. Once again, the phrase " a bunch of high priced mercenaries(except for bryant of course)" is far from correct.

My favorite Cub, as a kid I loved that him and Sosa were a powerful impact as a Pitcher and a Home Run Hitter, especially from 1998 through 2003 and Wood even showed he could hit here. Too bad they couldn't be champions with these great players but 2016 they were just as strong and won it all, Go Cubs!

Joe Morgan always said that Wrigley at night was WAY more intense and he thought the Cubs had a much bigger edge playing a big home game at night. This clip illustrates this--WOW--listen to that crowd!! INCREDIBLE atompshere!! (This is on a par with Yankee Stadium back in the day during some of their epic playoff classics in the mid-late 90's early 2000's.)

Same here. Next to the 🏆 this is easily my favorite moment. Pitchers hitting is exactly why I became a Cub fan as a kid. Even being from the South Side of Chicago. I hate the DH! Kerry was struggling early but handled this moment like an absolute boss. Especially considering what happened the game before, and the drought thay was at stake at that time. Closest we had been in decades. I've met him twice and I can't thank him enough for the memories he created. A true Cub legend.

One of the BEST at bats in LCS history! I'd have to imagine you'd be hard pressed to find TEN people in that ballpark, HELL, in that whole NEIGHBORHOOD that would have believed at that point the Cubs were not destined to win the LCS and play the Yankees, even BEAT the Yankees that year!!

@cauchamar What's funny is that even though I am not a Cubs' fan (I rooted for them, however, for my dad's sake, since he has been one his whole life), I too felt the same way you articulated. Even when the Cubs went up 5-3 in this game, something told me that they weren't going to hold onto that lead. Sadly, I was right, and Dad had to wait 13 years longer before he finally saw his team win.

I’ve never heard it louder at Wrigley. That was a great Cubs team that just had a horribly bad break and faced a pitcher in Beckett that was more dominant than anyone I’ve ever seen in that playoff run. There hasn’t been a better starting pitching staff in MLB since. Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Clement all at their peaks. NASTY.

As disappointed as we were after this season I was extremely excited for this team the next couple of years when they brought Maddux back and got Lee. Man I thought that team was going to do something big. Fastforward to 2016 and we finally win it all. Now Cubs fans crying every year we don't win it all. We'll get back there again whether its with Rizzo and Co. or not.

Total class act by Kerry by not showing up the pitcher. Tied the game with this epic homer and just kept his head down, no chest bump, no bat flip, touched em all, went back to dugout. Total class act! Baseball needs to get back to this NOW by following his example.

As a 32 yo Cubs fan, I feel like the excitement and energy in this game outpaces the energy level for the 2016 playoffs. I remember watching this game, and compared to 2016, people here were embracing the moment as opposed to being busy trying to capture it as it happened. Overall, I'm so happy I can watch these clips again without thinking about the "what ifs'."
