Houdini VDB In 5 minutes is a short video from 5MinuteFX that runs through various methods of creating VDB volumes and SDF's in Sidefx's Houdini 17.
Hopefully this will demystify some of the settings and help you create better and more efficient effects.

Is it possible to vary the vdb voxel size across an object, for example using another volume or object as a reference for a fall off, so I can have a controlled variation? I'm looking to achieve an aesthetic that has a variation in mesh thickness over a base mesh that has a uniform geometry?

Hi, thanks for watching. unfortunately I think you aren't able to vary the scale of the voxels in the same vdb. you can vary the number in that axis though. perhaps what you could do is transfer an attribute to control the displacement along the normal. This would give you the ability to control the thickness. you could even find the normal by using vdb gradient. I hope this helps

@@5MinuteFX Hey thanks it helped a lot, I used colour value to control the pscale through attribute transfer and accomplished a falloff effect by using the blend distance, with colour value driving the proximity scaling I quickly colour values are of importance to scale values, with black being the lowest to white give the largest values. Houdini is a versatile engine, thanks for the advice and tutorial!

@@GEORGE.M.M No problem! Yes, Houdini is a complex beast but if you can get a hold of the basics, you can apply them to any situation. That is what I try to do with my tutorials.
