Our thoughts and prayers are with this family that lost so much in this house fire today. We have an amazing Volunteer Fire Department here in Ridgway and the surrounding communities, coordinated by outstanding dispatchers. These firefighters put their lives at risk to help each and every one of us and we are grateful!

This FD needs to go back to firefighting school. The aerial is no use parked two houses down the street. And the FF's outside need to be inside, unless they're "outstanding" FF's meaning they aren't allowed to go in. This was a perfect scenario for the 1st due pump to use the deck gun to knock the fire down, and the aerial to gain access to the roof. As parked, apparatus are useless.
@bbwachter

I absolutely agree. The deck gun was the only thing that made sense. Parking the truck 2 houses away was wrong, blocking everything from attacking the fire. Really bad fire fighting.

Anyone happen to hear the radio ask for the power company to expedite, not a 1 to 2 hour response, for a hot powerline across the road in front of the house? That is why equipment and men were not right in front of the house initially.

I appreciate and thank you for your volunteerism. I hope this doesn't apply to you, but the mandatory training requirements are getting much more demanding. I'm 9 years younger than you, and I tried to help in the same way. It quickly became more than I wanted to do. Not because of the dangers and expectations at the fire scene. Because of the hours and hours I was required to travel around and attend classes. We live in a litigeous society. People don't seem to understand that what goes around comes around. The same crowd that's always looking for the "lawsuit lottery" is crying the loudest when they need help and no one close by is "qualified". I hope you find this not to be the case.
@kenmeinken8115
@kenmeinken8115 Жыл бұрын
@@peteheyde7999 Yes, I have to wonder about the training requirements, especially since the volunteers are often expected to pay for their training out of their own pockets. My experience was in the 1960-80's. Our department had it's own state certified instructor and most training was done in house. We never had to pay for outside training either. Back in 1968, "EMS" training was Red Cross Basic First Aid. Now the option is highly skilled training...or no EMS response at all. Fifty miles east of here, residents have been warned to expect SLOW OR NO EMS RESPONSE due to lack of personnel.

Your channel actually found me and i must say you do really good work . As a member of a small fire department in Forest County i understand how frustraiting it is to crew trucks during normal working hours. Don't want to be an arm chair fireman here. If it were posssible once hydrant supply was established i'm a firm beliver the deck gun on inital attack with a set of stacked tips could have drastically reduced the work load with limited manpower. Then transition over to handlines. I wasn't there so i can't comment too much. I like watching videos such as these in hopes to gain knowledge and build attack stratigies . none the less good work to all.

My dad was first on scene fighting the fire since we were one of the neighborhoods living on that shreet(1:22 light brown house with brown roof at the end) and my friendo lived only two houses down from them which is where the family stayed when the flames were rising. Everybody got out safely accept for the animals. We're hoping we can find them if they did escape or hid somewhere safe inside the house. We saw your drone flying over top, It was an absolute tragedy 💔

Good video but a clear example of errors to avoid. A deck gun could have knocked down a LOT of that fire. Forget the car, it's nothing compared to the house. I dont know about resources but the response was way too slow. Noo coordination, priorities are wrong. The volunteers did their best, but whoever was in charge needs to retrain.
@JB91710
@JB91710 Жыл бұрын
The first arriving engine could have laid-in and deck gunned this using tank water in the first minute of arrival. Not one drop of that first line should have been wasted on that car while they allowed the house to burn. That was a job for additional lines. Otherwise, it looks like the penetrated the interior and stopped the fire in short order.

To long of a response time for one , the engine and ladder should have been closer to the house, not two houses away. An aggressive attack should have been in place as soon the engine arrived for search and rescue. There should have been another engine in place to the rear of the building since there is access from the next street over with hand lines in place. I don't see any ground ladders in place nor anyone on the roof to ventilate. If this is a small town with limited manpower, I understand, but there is no excuse for the delay in response or truck placement. Great on the drone footage, by the way.

What’s the deal with them talking about more air packs are on the way? Do they not have enough packs for the crews that responded? I seen more guys without packs then with. I do agree with the comment before with the ladder being entirely too far away from the Fire building. That was the perfect fire for a deck gun for kicking the shit out of it, especially if they had lack of manpower in the beginning. I wasn’t there so not sure what they have for manpower and or for guys that are interior guys. I’m interested in the run down on this job, so if someone that knows this department hook us up with the run down. Looks like they did what they could do with who and what they had, so keep on keeping on fellas 🤙🏻

Also at 38:13, 40:01, 42:37. At 48:03 Aerial truck is being relocated.

It's sad when people criticize arrival time. I started as a volunteer and once the pager was activated we needed to dress or put shoes on etc, drive to the station, (for some that might be 2 minutes for others that may be 10) get our gear, etc etc.....then drive to the fire and that might be 2 minutes or 15 minutes.....of course it wasn't the same when i went to a paid department.....anyway give the volunteers a break......

I’ve seen SO MANY people complain about the horrible response time to these fires, but when there is even a breath of bringing in a paid department, these same PI$$ERS & MOANERS are the FIRST to scream, yell, and SHUT DOWN any increase in their property taxes needed to fund such a system. How do I know? I attend our Twp monthly meetings and have witnessed the bullcrap. Can’t have your free fire fighting and quicker response time too!!!!!

@@marshanotmarcia7433 my volunteer company pays us $10 a call, and now we also finally got our volunteers to work 12 hour shifts for a driver only 7 days a week around the clock and the ones that work get paid by weekly. We found that what is most needed is a driver to be at the firehouse 24/7 and also we are working hard to make sure most of us are able to drive and kick ass as a real chauffeur and not just to get water to the nozzle but if anything at all goes wrong that chauffeur can fix the problem to keep the water flowing

In England we use a mix of wholetime and on call firefighters the on-call one don't have to be available 24/7 but commit to a minimum number of available hours, the on-call are also paid for training and shouts, in my mostly rural county on-call firefighters do a 32 day (paid) course at the county training facility prior to joining their station, it helps that hydrants are absolutely everywhere, manning is still an issue in the small villages during the day due to most people working outside the 5 minute response time

Were they afraid their million dollar apparatus would get smoke on them. That ladder truck was totally useless where it was parked . No ventilation of roof. Same with engine. No attempt at interior attack in early stage at all . Could have made rear entry and push fire back in on its self. more focused on the van than structure. But unfortunately see this same seen over and over . Total lack of interior firefighting. Just surround and drown. Am retired FF getting out in 90s. We would have had ladder placed for opening roof and ready to for ladder pipe operation while engine crew made attack from back. Depts need to train more on interior attacks and position of rigs.

There was a power line down. Once the utility secured it they repositioned the Aerial. There are some time stamps in the description that help illustrate that particular situation. At 02:16, pause the video. The power line that is down is from the phone pole in the bottom center of the shot. At 30:08 down power line can be seen marked by cones. Notice that that line is right in front of the Aerial truck. At 37:50 a discussion with dispatch concerning that down line is heard. Also at 38:13, 40:01, 42:37. At 48:03 Aerial truck is being relocated.

I'm a month late on this, but she was looking for her keys in her purse and when she went to move her car she realized it was already too late because the car was super hot and caught under a minute after she moved away from it. The lady herself is an older women with health issues, and she was panicking about the car because it was brand new. She did NOT purposely leave it there for insurance. She just didn't have the time since the house went up in flames so quickly with the car quickly following it with how close it was. (Grill on the front porch started it. It burst into flames).

If the fire won't destroy the whole house, FD will make sure the water/foam will. Looks to me that the standard american procedure is to just dump enormous amounts of water until eventually the fire will be put out, instead of just using water in strategic ways to attack the fire only when necessary in hopes they would've actually saved a bit of that house.

You need to take into account that these are VOLUNTEER Firefighters!! It's not like they can slide down a pole and jump into an already warmed up truck. The firefighters have to 1st get to the station from wherever they are in the town. 2 get their gear on. And 3 wait for the rest of the crew to show up before the truck can leave the fire station. There is probably a minimum amount of personnel needed to operate the truck. You can't just have 1 single fire fighter jump in the truck and leave without anyone to accompany him/her. You can say fine, have the rest of the firefighters meet the truck and the scene but then that becomes a clusterfart with parking and firefighter's cars and trucks all over the fire location. That would also require the volunteers to drive the normal speed limit and obey other traffic laws. Sure, they might have red lights attached to their car that they can use, but a screaming fire truck is going to get thru traffic a lot quicker and more safely than a car or truck with a light and a beeping horn! Then you also need to take into account that if you have a bunch of volunteer's cars parking wherever that it could hinder ambulances and other fire fighting equipment from getting in and out of the area quickly. Finally if you have a bunch of firefighters arriving at the scene at all different times and parking wherever, they need to get to the fire and check in with the command post and get their assignments. It would hinder operations if the command has to stop every few minutes to explain everything and get them where they need to be. All this takes up a lot of precious minutes. Now compare that to having a few firefighters with the truck before it leaves the station. They are able to change in to their gear on route to the fire and perhaps get a very brief plan of attack before they even get there. They are in a big screaming fire engine with lights flashing and horns blowing loudly so people are more likely to see and hear it well before it gets to them and they move the hell out of the way! ( At least in theory!!) Once on scene maybe one firefighter gets out with a hose to hook up to a fire hydrant while the truck drives closer to the scene. The guy who jumped out connects the hose to the hydrant as the truck comes to a stop. Now another guy jumps out and connects the other side of the hose to the truck, turns on the pump and boom, water is ready to go to whomever needs it. Meanwhile the rest of the crew gets out and goes and does what they were trained to do. Hopefully they are able to put the fire out in as quick a time as possible. This is a far better and more efficient to get the job done.

Sort of an ignorant comment considering they are all volunteers. If you fire them, you would have zero fire protection. Most of the country is covered by volunteer fire service, although it is increasingly becoming a career thing since newer generations don't like to contribute to the communities as much, since it takes away from their computer gaming time. sad.
