In the books, kinslaying is something very bad. That's why Rhaenys wouldn't want to kill them. To kill your own kin is one of the worst things you can do, that's how it's explained in the books.

Fun facts about Meleys ( Rhaeynys's dragon): It's a female dragon, also known as "The Red Queen" because of the crown shaped bones on her head and cause of the red color ofc. She is the fastest dragon, she's even faster than Caraxes. She's 3-4 biggest at this point. (Vhagar>The Cannibal>Vermithor>Caraxes/Meleys) Before Rhaenys she was ridden by Alyssa Targaryen, the mother of Viserys and Daemon :) Meleys is a pretty powerful dragon 🔥🖤 Btw, I love your new hair color Madison, looks awesome! 😍

I have a theory. Although, it might just be a mother's love which she clearly loves her children no matter what but I believe Alicent told Cole to protect Halaena because she finally understood what she had meant by "the beast beneath the boards", which is when Rhaenys came out with her dragon. She finally understands her daughter has a gift of a seer.

The Best beneath the board is more than meleys. Got always used to pack multiple entendres in the episode titles. It's talking about everything that's simmering beneath the surface in this ep from the white worm to larys. There's a reason they found Aegon "under the boards". The Rhaenys thing aside, the coronation ceremony was amazing. This visuals and the hightower theme had such a classic GoT ominious, foreboding vibe to it. Those dim siluettes of Otto and Alicent talking. Excellent.

Rhaenys's scene is not about the war, it's about Rhaenys's development: she's not defying them because they usurped Rhaenyra, but because the Hightowers thought they could use her as a pawn. She's saying I'm a dragon rider, I rule a House, and I decide for myself.

I was blown away by the details in the coronation. It felt like watching Nicholas II being crowned in an Orthodox ceremony with all the hollow pomp & circumstance of a rotting system. It's what I'd always envisioned from a GoT coronation. Tom Glynn-Carney was terrific in bringing out Aegon's fear, hesitation, pride & euphoria all at once. I'm glad they kept the much despised Criston putting the Conqueror's crown on Aegon II's head. The Kingmaker is born! What the show's doing really well is the details, down to splitting the treasury or locking up servants. Usually the passionate debates, the treachery, the heartbreak are glossed over & we only see the regime change as "fait accompli". This bring to life the mechanism that historically goes behind a coup, which I assume is as emotionally taxing for the people seizing power. That's why I like agonized & conflicted Alicent more than her steadfast source counterpart. It feels more flesh & blood. She vacillates but her messianic fear for her children fates her to make a cursed gamble.

Ser Arryk told Rhaenys that the gates of the dragonpit would be guarded, so Rhaenys might have believed that her only chance of escape was to ride Meleys up through the floor, even though it meant killing a few hundred people. I don't know why she wasn't wearing a helmet, though; or, lacking a helmet, Rhaenys didn't get a very bad head injury when Meleys pulled her up through that solid floor.

Actually, author George R.R. Martin speaks of the dragon Sunfyre (Aegon's dragon) as being the most beautiful. We've only seen a very brief glimpse of him at Driftmark when Aegon came for Laena's funeral. Meleys is the swiftest of the dragons and one of the more formidable, almost in the league of Vhagar and Caraxes and Vermithor.

Rhaenys was never going to burn them at the end, she's not the type of person to kill a whole family that actually haven't done anything to her. The worst they have done is lock her in a room for a few hours, it's not in her nature to just kill them for that. Also, this family is also her family, they are all related. Killing them would not only make her a kin-killer but also a king-killer.

It's not about the feet... The reason that scene gave you the hereby jeebies isn’t because there’s something wrong with a kink. Larys could be off having a happy healthy relationship with the Westerosi Uma Thurman in a castle somewhere, but he’s forcing the queen to make a concession, and using it as a matter of control and coercion. This comes up all the time when people can’t understand that rape has nothing to do with sex and sexual desire, and everything to do with violence, domination, and shame. Larys isn’t dedicated or loving toward Alicent, he just offered to sell her out to her father (you think he’s looking to get a peek at Otto’s hairy old man toes?). He’s using her body and forcing her to use her body in a way that she finds shameful. He’s doing this to hurt her and put her down below himself in some way. It’s an excellent scene in that it demonstrates the sick relationship Alicent has with her own body and self worth, and what systemic misogyny can do to the women who buy into it and work to uphold it. And it’s a perfect foil to the idea that Raenyra is a “whore” for entering into loving consensual open marriage with Laenor’s and Harwin, while Alicent is still the Madonna while engaging in sexual acts directly bartered for information. (posted by IndecisiveSpider on the HOTD subreddit, all credits to them)

Why did they hold Aegon's coronation inside the dragon pit? In fact, they did this in the book. If Rhaenys had killed them, she would have been guilty of kinslaying, kingslaying and mass murder. Are you kidding me? I doubt very much that the citizens of Westeros would have accepted this. They would have blamed Rhaenyra and Westeros would have ended up embroiled in a rebellion to oust the princess.

I've posted a few comments on why torching everyone in the end wouldn't have been a good idea. I have since seen yet another bigger reason it wouldn't have ended the war or anything. I'll also list some reasons why she did what she did. First the standard reasons. Why she burst through the floor: 1.) We clearly see that she chooses to stay & witness Aegon's coronation or most of it anyway. She watches him ascend the stage & the crown brought to him before choosing to walk away. Clearly she's pissed at the clear act of treason on display here. 2.) She wanted to give the Greens a strong show of force. Simply getting her Dragon & dipping out quietly wouldn't make as strong an impact as confronting them head on does. She knows the Greens fear Rhaenyra getting Rhaenys & her Dragon on their side. Alicent literally told her that, she said they're hoping Rhae comes to the peace talk table if she doesn't have support from Rhaenys Dragon. This is clear evidence the Greens are scared of the Blacks & Rhaenys bursting through the floor in a show of strength to let the Greens witness the raw power of her Dragon (Which by the way is 1 of only 5 adult sized dragons right now. That we know of anyway. I'm not talking about the Wild ones we'll see later either) Right now Caraxes, Syrax, Saesmoke, Meleys & Vhagar are the biggest Dragons. Seasmoke has no rider but is around Dragonstone I believe. That means literally 3 of the 4 biggest Dragons with Riders are on the Blacks side. With many other Teenage sized Dragons to boot. So Rhaenys breaking through the Floor showcasing Meleys power & literally forcing the Greens to watch her go to the Blacks might (in her mind) bring the Greens to the peace talks in the same way Alicent hoped to Bring Rhae by depriving her of the Dragon. 3.) The Smallfolk were simply a casualty. Maybe Rhaenys could hear them cheering & decided their deaths didn't matter in the grand scheme. Or maybe she wasn't thinking about them at all idk. Edited 4.) Saw A vid where they suggested that maybe the big Dragon entrances/exits were sealed. Surely they have a way to do that. Greens wouldn't want Meleys to freely just walk out. Or possibly there were guards down there going for her or the Dragonkeepers were trying to stop here. These last 2 are stretches but hopefully we get more reasons in ep 10 Why she didn't burn them: 1.) Rhaenys saw Alicent step forward to literally stand between Aegon & her dragon. A mother protecting her child in a way Rhaenys was unable to do with Laena or Laenor. This moved her greatly & if she ever planned on burning them at all that gesture ended the thought. 2.) There's still no 100% confirmation on which Targs are fire proof. The show hasn't given an answer, Viserys agrees to cauterizing his wounds but later is seen holding his hand directly over fire & not showing any pain. Daemon flew through Vhagar's fire without any problem & Dragon fire is shown literally incinerating people in Caraxes case & turning people to ash statues in seconds in Drogon's case. Vhagar's fire was still literal flames when Daemon flew through it. So maybe certain Targs are fire proof & others aren't? Laena died to fire & she had Targ blood. Viserys (Dany's bro) died to hot gold. But she said Dragons can't be killed by fire implying there are some other "dragons" aka Targs that were fireproof? Maybe Aemond/Aegon would've survived & Rhaenys didn't want to risk it? (This is a stretch for sure but I felt adding it was okay) 3.) Not a single person on that stage ruled any house of power. Otto has an older brother who rules Oldtown (In books when that unnamed Bro died his son took the Job). Tyland doesn't rule the Lannister's his brother Jason does, Jason also has control of all the Westerlands. House Strong is weak with Larys at the head. Pretty much all the big players that back Greens would still be alive & declare war in vengeance. This matters because as of right now war is not declared. Rhae doesn't even know her Dad is dead & Alicent is going for a peaceful end. No side has declared war but would immediately if Rhaenys burned that stage. Not to mention it'd make the Blacks look bad, would make Rhaenys a Kin Slayer & King Slayer. It'd turn houses like the Starks against the Blacks. Would get houses like Tyrell/Baratheon to fully back the Greens. No war would be prevented by burning that stage. 4.) Most importantly there's a 4th Targ child of Alicent's that is not on that stage. Prince Daeron Targaryen is the 4th child of Viserys/Alicent & 3rd boy. collider.com/house-of-the-dragon-daeron-targaryen-george-rr-martin-comments/ GRRM says right here that Daeron is indeed in the show they just didn't have time to fit him into the 1st season. But he is there he's just hanging at Oldtown with the Hightowers in charge. And importantly he is a Dragonrider & old enough to lead battles & be claimed heir. I don't wish to spoil the books but TLDR him being alive would be a threat. Rhaenys knows this & therefore knows she wouldn't be killing all the Greens if she attacked the Stage. Plus the kids of Aegon who aren't there. Edited 5.) I totally missed that the High Septon is also on that Stage & killing him would've been seen as a direct attack against the gods. The Faith Militant Uprising as already happened at this point & it literally couldn't be stopped with force even by Maegor The Cruel. Dragons aren't the answer to war in all cases. The Uprising was only stopped after Maegor by Jaehaerys through peaceful means. So killing the High Septon would result in another uprising & that coupled with all the high lords declaring would be to much for the Blacks Final thought. It appears many people are acting like Rhaenys doing what she did won't have follow up consequences. Maybe I'd share that fear if the scene was all about her power moment & not showing death. But it wasn't, they deliberately show multiple scenes of multiple citizens on screen dying & fleeing for their lives. If it was purely meant as a girl power moment to make Rhaenys look flawless they wouldn't have directly shown any death. It'd of been a Avengers situation where death is implied but never shown. But no, they fucking showed many deaths & horror. They showed it because they wanted us to see it cause it will come into play. It will be a political point the Greens can exploit against the Blacks. Rhaenyra will like be forced to choose between punishing Rhaenys or not. And I don't want to post book spoilers so I'll say this, what Rhaenys did here will influence at much later event. Book readers know or should know what I mean. There will be consequences from this. Or at the very least we're likely to see Rhaenys explain herself to some extent & the Greens bring it up during the Dragonstone Showdown

I know people are upset with the ending but I honestly assumed Rhaenys came out from below because the other dragon pit exit was blocked. At least I assume with all the security and fore planning Otto did that he won't have left such an easy opening for Rhaenyra to just fly in and out.

The ep was great in what it was supposed to do, give the new monarch time to shine...who gave a top tier performance with his mood swings, establishing Aegon as far less one dimensional than Joffrey. Finally a proper GoT crowning. A Green heavy political intrigue focused ep, with lots of great visuals & ethical quandary. Gonna be a Microwave Attention Span Challenge for the “only here for Daemon making great value Patrick Bateman faces" crowd. Rhaenys isn't aware of the book. She can't imagine the length of depravity & slow escalation both sides will go to, to kill her own kin at this point. That's Freefolk brain gigachad logic. *Ned kills Jaime in throne room & there's no War of Five Kings. Cat shoulda poisoned Cersei at Winterfell.* Tbf a fully Green ep without Rhaenys “good guy triumphal” pandering woulda been better. I prefer moral dilemma Alicent over ruthless ambitious F&B council Alicent. The nuance of her has been lost on a viewership wanting her to fit the mold of a Disney evil queen. So this is a nudge in the right direction, that things are more grey from here. Her intro as an adult was her falling into Larys trap in harrenhal. So it's not a character change. Aegon & Alicent have been more compelling than the gas light goodie two shoes way Rhaenyra's been portrayed so far. If ur already blaming smallfolk for not supporting Slay Kween...hoo boy do I got bad news! This is the copium ep. Grown men seething watching him wear the crown.

I did like seeing how conflicted Alicent was. I still don't like her and think she's a hypocrite but at least I can sympathize with her dilemma. This episode did a good job of showing the behind the scenes of a coup. The many many moments of chess pieces behind the scenes to allow it to be successful. The conflicting emotions of the people involved. The killing and imprisonment of those that would challenge them. Even the installment of a puppet King that is believed to be easily controlled. Overall it was very well handled.

(Even before he slept with Rhaenyra, at the very beginning, during the tournament, he attacked Daemon from behind after Daemon spared him! It was nice detail suggesting who Cole is, and it was foreshadowing for what he'll do to Targaryens). He only talks a lot about honor but he has no honor at all, lmao. He's just a very impulsive man with a huge ego, a simple murderer no knight. He's a piece of sh*t in the books. In the show, at the beginning, ppl felt sorry for him because he's cute, has puppy eyes, and looks so innocent... but now we're finally starting to see his true colors and realize who Cole really is... 🤢🤮🤮😭

Honestly this episode to me was probably the weakest (still ok) because of how different it was to the book. The Green Council, Otto plotting behind Alicent's back, Rhaenys and Meleys at the Dragonpit, the drawn out plot to get Aegon. It just felt a bit jarring to me. That Rhaenys and Meleys scene felt like more style over substance (GOT season 8) I do love the complexity of Alicent's character though and I like what they are doing with Aegon (his coronation scene was great) Looking forward to episode 10 for a certain "showdown"

I didn't like that they did that everything was misunderstood in the book, Viserys never said that his son should sit on the throne when viserys died alicent i arrange everything for his son to be king and send men to kill rhaenyra in the book alicent he envious and ambitious she just thinks of her differently in the series they keep putting her as a poor thing and a son who doesn't know anything and who does bad things are the others even her father and that's all wrong in the book who is villain and alicent already in the series keeps putting him as a poor thing for me a big mistake in this series and the personalities of what she did with Alicent, Rhaenyra and daemon like that and it is not obliged to be like the book more at least similar to the book in the series there are people who like Alicent I'm like what do you like Alicent i'm sure if people had seen the book before the series they wouldn't be liking this snake Alicent she is a hypocrite remember in the fourth episode when she tells Rhaenyra that the Targaryens have strange customs and now she married her son with her own sister like her and a hypocrite and she She is a terrible mother, even the actress herself says that Alicent is a horrible mother and just to see how he treats his children, look at the scene with Helena and Alicent, when Alicent goes to touch Helena, Helena takes her hand away Alicent just shows that Helena doesn't like her own mother and Olivia who plays Alicent I say that Rhaenyra is a great mother that she gives love to her children unlike Alicent,Only person who deserves sits on the throne and Rhaenyra because she sits on the throne alicent , Aegon or Aemond and only destruction Viserys died with leprosy disease plus Alicent and Otto they were giving too much Poppy milk is a medicine that does good it makes you not feel pain but when you give too much poppy milk it will start to hurt So much so that daemon sniffed the glass because he knows the greens are killing his brother they are helping the king die. I didn't like what they did that the reason for the war was all misunderstood and putting that prophecy thing in the book they don't have that, I didn't like what they did with Alicent it's that thing in the Episode 8 at the end in the scene with viserys and alicent and saying that all this is happening because it's a misunderstanding anyone who read the book knows that it wasn't like that I didn't like it at all, I hope to see the real Alicent from the book in the book he is a horrible person but she is very powerful and is not afraid of anything I really hope to see this Alicent in the second season at least Similar to a book because this alicent from the series My God I think Aegon won't listen to his mother, it's also because she just mistreats him (even though he deserves it because he's shit) but look at the scene between the two of them when he asks her if she loves him and then she responds that he's an idiot Even the actress who plays Alicent has already said that Alicent is a terrible mother and it was the actress herself who said, I don't think Aegon will listen to her but I know what will happen because I read the book Fire and Blood but don't worry I I'm not going to give any spoilers, this woman is shit, she even tried to manipulate Rhaenys in the scene between the two of them, you can see this in their conversation, I hope the writers show Alicent for real in the second season, a strong woman who doesn't let herself be manipulated and I I want to see Alicent from the book, Alicent from the book she is a strong person and no one manipulates her unlike the series that keeps putting it like (but she does these things and because of her father) In the book Alicent is rotten and very different. from the series that Alicent is weak because she doesn't speak her opinion and only listens to others and she is also very stupid, You said that you thought Alicent's attention was cool, that you didn't want them to kill Rhaenyra, I'm sorry but there's no way If this doesn't happen Alicent is being very foolish to believe this because what she is already doing is betrayal, is betrayal and death so even if she didn't do "I don't want to kill Rhaenyra", but Rhaenyra has every right to kill her because it is a betrayal and Alicent really thinks that Rhaenyra will accept her brother sitting on the throne if it is her right, for God's sake, she is a Targaryen, the heir to the throne, she will never accept it, it will be a war, and she will not likes to know that her brother, the usurper who stole her throne, is that her father died is that no one said anything about her father's death because Alicent said no one could talk about Viserys' death they hid Viserys' death from Everyone, this is all a BETRAYAL Viserys would never put one of his children he always said that the only person he wanted to sit on the throne is Rhaenyra the only daughter of the woman he truly loves the only one, in episode 8 rhaenyra was talking to her father about the prophecy but viserys didn't even answer rhaenyra because he had drunk milk of poppy after the end of the episode in the scene Alicent is viserys at that moment Alicent gave milk of poppy to him again so viserys started talking to Alicent thinking it was Rhaenyra because hours ago rhaenyra went to the his room then he thought it was Rhaenyra he started talking he was talking about Aegon's PROPHECY more like Alicent thought viserys was talking about her son Aegon but viserys wasn't talking about him, he's talking about the prophecy ( this is mostly talked about in the series Game of Thrones) but as he was unconscious at the time, he thought it was Rhaenyra he was talking to, Viserys would never put a rapist on the throne, and those people at the beginning of the episode at the meeting they said let's go start with our plan now And because they were already planning they were just waiting for Viserys to die, they are all traitors, it doesn't matter because he was already planning behind the king they were already betraying the Viserys they were just waiting for this old man to die they just they were waiting for this to happen and as it has now happened they are just going to continue with their plan And no one will question why they want a man and not a woman and if they question they will die as we saw in the episode, I wish they had shown more but unfortunately they didn't show much more in the book shows The scene of Rhaenys with her dragon at the end of episode 9 does not exist in the book, as does the scene with Viserys and Alicent at the end of episode 8. He talking about the prophecy is Alicent getting everything wrong

@ No no, Rhaenys didn't say Dracarys cause they are all still family at the end of the day. And being known as a Kingslayer was frowned upon, plus they literally imprisoned her and her dragon. But the show literally would be over,so no episode 10. But she going to warn Rhaenyra cause they really just usurped her rightful place on the throne. And besides Rhaenyra would've returned on Dragon back into the trap and not knowing that Viserys is dead, plus Baela and Rhaena are at Dragonstone, so Rhaenys is going to protect her granddaughters by telling Rhaenyra what the Hightowers are doing. The author said there needs to be 4 seasons with 10 episodes each to complete the Dance of the Dragon.
