Jasmine Harman is back helping hoarders across the country. In this episode, Jasmine helps 87 year old Olive who's three bedroom home is so full she has to wash and eat at the local community centre, spending most of her day outside.
Jasmine also connects with Vicky, who, just like Jasmine, has a hoarder Mum. Suffering from depression and obsessed with blankets, bags and toys she finds on the street, Janet opens up to Jasmine for help, but will she be able bring real change?

These programmes are vastly superior to their American equivalent which seem purely for entertainment and the "joy" of watching other people's mental health problems. Jasmine is so kind and empathetic, by the end of the programme you're feeling warmth and sympathy for the hoarders rather than the revulsion and disgust encouraged by the US programme. Well done."There but for the grace of God go I".

How is this better? All they did was talk to the hoarders and move things around essentially. At least on Hoarders they actually get the homes emptied out, get the homes refurbished and sanitized, then pay for them to get the proper therapy done afterwards.

because the US program IS entertainment, they know they can’t help people in 3 days but they’re also unwilling to pay professionals long enough to do what these shows do because there’s little return for them, people watch the show as it is now so they won’t go out of their way to help them more than they already do

Olive Taylor died last year aged 93. A few years ago while living in a hostel she got a malicious Christmas card saying nobody cared for her! What a sad life. Nobody forced her to live like that but the loss of her fiance and mental health played a huge part. She donated thousands of pounds to Brighton charities. I hope she's at peace now.

My Mom Died at 64 after caring for her for 10 years, we were best friends, then 1 year later later to the day, my Sister died at 41, she's always been there for me! Then 6 months later my Brother at 43 he always made everything funny. I was so lost! First I lost 75lbs and was skin and bones, then I slept all-day, then my husband took me shopping and I didn't stop. It helped me with my depression big time!! I started hoarding and couldn't stop shopping. Then my boys moved us to a different city with them and I gave EVERYTHING away to my family and friends and nieces and nephews. I understand the hoarding. Sept it let me go, were it doesn't let some people go. I was lucky!

It is a HUGE difference when you give your things to friends, relatives, than just throw them away like garbage! Easier doable. I am a hoarder, i know.

Hoarding is more common than anyone realises. It starts so innocently, and is an escape from reality. You will notice most hoarders are living alone, no one to criticise and ballance their lives. Hoarders need help, they need a friend.

Just like my grandparents, My nana was a jeohva wittnes she never went to her husbands funeral, me and my sister had day off school,she a hoarder if she bought iron, she save old plug ,think it comfort thing like a nest, my mam piles stuff her side bedroom sadly lost dad last year, he would sneak bags out and take to work or tip it affects everyone, my auntie has moved back to that house she grew up in,yet she let no-one in so police had to she basically living in the attic, she basically washing in a bowl water she given up left abusive marriage and she safe now, mam tak3s her meals, long story:(

If my mother looked at and treated me the way Vicky’s mom did to her everyday, I’d have massive emotional trauma. Her mom constantly looks at her like she doesn’t want her to be there, that’s horrible… I understand she’s struggling but as someone who’s had sustained major depression for years, I feel like I can say she needs medication. If your depression is that serious that you’re starting to openly treat family like you don’t even see them, you need more serious treatment than just talking with a counselor.

My ❤ is hurting for Janet, you can hear in her voice and see in her eyes how far she has gone down. I have a feeling if you were to look into her past her issue/s will all have come from there. Same with olive. When you grow up with nothing, then you are able to have IMPORTANT things that you should have had grown up such as heat (blankets, food etc) then you start to buy them to excess. My ❤ goes out to both of them and Janets kids are they are doing their very best to help their mother who they ovs love with everything they have.

what I find interesting is that most of these hoarders live in council houses, so why is 1 person allowed to remainin a 3 or 4 bedroom house?? I live in Canada's version of council house & if a family member leaves, they move you to a smaller unit. And the landlord hasn't entered/inspected the units in 20 YEARS??!! It's so odd..
@puddindancer
@puddindancer Жыл бұрын
In the UK most council houses come with secure tenancies which basically means it's effectively your house for life if you want it to be and they only evict in certain circumstances. They aren't just houses, they're homes so moving people to smaller units after family members move out really wouldn't go down very well over here. Also, it isn't really a viable option as we don't have anywhere else people can go anyway 😂
@GeeEee75
@GeeEee75 11 ай бұрын
@puddindancer I see where you are coming from with regards to the house being a home, but I agree that it is odd that there seems to be no systematic inspection of what remains council property. A house that is hoarded to that extent surely attracts pests and, as such, is a nuisance to all the neighbours, so I'm surprised that the council allows the situation to continue unabated.

Hoarding is a mental illness and I believe starts with a trigger and a very poor diet, which causes depression. It’s is a multiple step program to recovery. Most hoarders exist on canned, or boxed, or processes fast food and sugary artificial drinks. Their body needs to be cleaned out as well as their homes. I know this first hand. God bless this woman for trying to help these poor souls. 🙏🏻

They are all coping with loss in an unhealthy way. They are trying to full their empty spaces with stuff. Olive losing her fiance couldn't move on. She is so sweet and would have been a wonderful wife and mother instead of a hoarder. That plaque proves just how she she transferred her attention and energy.

If you want to help a hoarder: 1. Show respect to his belongings, dont reffer like they are "junk", "garbage", etc. 2. Dont ask the hoarder to throw away the belongings, just find a way to DONATE them. Tell them other people could happily use the things. That way is more easy for the hoarder to discard. I am a hoarder, i know what im talking

Would you believe someone who told you that empty food packaging could be donated for use by someone else? Yes some of it could be recycled but not all, and none of it could be reused. I would have thought that what is most important is to address the underlying psychological issues that are causing a person to not be able to let go of items that are of no use to themselves or anyone else.
