I feel like Tinnitus is a disease because if it was a symptom, symptoms usually go away. But therefore my tinnitus is on going constantly. If it goes away I’d call it a symptom. But, unfortunately to me it is a disease. Makes me sick and annoyed.

The ringing in my ears gets so extremely bad at night, or in the mornings when it's the most quietest around me. Sometimes I catch myself holding my hands over my ears to make the high pitch ringing sound stop. It's so damn frustrating that I almost cry because I listen to this noise all day, everyday. Day in, day out. Years of it.

I can't speak for you but I imagine its possible that when anxiety is low the noise just isn't as immediately irritating as it might be if you're anxious. Maybe the loudness was just your awareness? As a 9 year sufferer of tinnitus I can say with confidence that tinnitus is without a doubt potentially caused by many different things but there are certainly several common issues that exacerbate tinnitus, such as stress, dietary problems, lack of sleep, muscle tension in the neck, jaw and face, vitamin and mineral deficiency and other types of toxicity in the body.

I remember the night that I feeled that increases. I was putting a handsfree on the left ear, and suddenly I wake up from that increased one. But I was having before that period and until now a massive pain in my neck muscles and also a tick tick when I walk that I heard from my neck. I have tinnitus from loud noise, worked construction for 43 years. Didn’t use ear protection for about half of it. I got hearing aids about a year ago, they make a huge difference, while the noise is still there I don’t notice it much of the time I have the hearing aids in. At night I use a noise machine that produces a fan like sound, helps tremendously. After a while the sound lulls me to sleep like a log.

Your right on all accounts. Don’t worry about it; no. 1. It may ease off over time. Try to exercise your facial muscles and try lower jaw movement exercises daily as it was a head knock that caused it. This by far, not a cure, but in your case it could help in the meantime. 9+ years of torture for me so far. Every day all day. I have to hear “around” the constant high pitched screaming. And of course severe tinnitus is associated with depression. Duh! Mine started during a temporary Eustachian tube malfunction and hasn’t left since. I’ve had the tests and attempted treatments that did not work. Doctors don’t understand this condition at all and seem to just shrug it off because there’s nothing they can do to fix it. In the meantime, their patients who have it feel like they’re going insane. My tinnitus is almost gone certainly alot alot better as I was suicidal at first. I got it about 5 months ago from an expolsive music event. What I learned is the ear gets drawn in like to protect itself thus taking all the tiny bones in the ear out of alignment. So I constantly massaged my ear by using coconut oil and working my finger deep in the whole and working it out and wide. And then get behind the ear where it joins to the skull and get in there. Keep at it. It's taken me months of every day work but it's almost all better.

I’ve had tinnitus since 2011 when I was extremely unwell, it was so loud I could hear it over a jet engine, I was suicidal, I then decided to except it as part of me, once I excepted it the noise reduced considerably, now I have fully embraced tinnitus as my friend and a warning sign to stress and anxiety, it has dropped to a level where I look for it, where’s it gone! Unless your ears are damaged Try and stay calm reduce stress and it will calm right down. It took me 8 years to get well and understand my tinnitus. Good luck As a note, Guildford Surrey ear hospital many years ago invited the public off the street for a free hearing test including the sound room test, nearly everyone had some sort of tinnitus of all different levels, so we are not alone.

@@zarazara5109 Dear Zara Zara very sorry to hear your struggle with it., if your ears are not damaged one of the main causes is stress and tension in the neck, I used to lay in a very warm bath up to my chin and the very warm water relaxed the neck muscles allow the blood flow better, it calms it down considerably, each time I go for a body massage the masseur always says you’ve got tinnitus and I say how do you know and they always say your neck is to tense and knotted, de-stress, however if the ears are actually damaged then an ear doctor is your only option to try and help, please remember you are not alone millions suffer with it.

@@zarazara5109 I've had it for a decade more since young, first of all you'll have to come in terms that it stays with you forever, yes it is permanent so accept it. It is driving you insane yes ? I understand, mine is like metal screeching sound which is loud and constant. Next is understand this, you are not alone in this as there are people whom suffer the same thing as you, me for example. I know it is hard at first but do not think of it as a torment because stress, increasing of tension level and blood pressure will only worsen it trust me which resulting in more panic and stress. Think of it like this, it will progressively getting worse but who cares ? You already have it anyways, don't keep your mind around it and instead focus on doing something else that need your attention then eventually you'll forget about it. During night time or quiet atmosphere is the worst time, I know I know. Try to find any way to relieve by masking it with white noise, loud fan, podcast whatsoever which helps, focus on these sound instead of the tinnitus you are suffering from and it will help you sleep better trust me. A better diet, exercise is compulsory so to slow down the progressive worsening of tinnitus and equally crucial mental health. No more overly loud music or concerts as these will only contribute more to worsening the condition. Always remember, you aren't alone in this. Hope this helps and I pray that your tinnitus may be a temporary thing ... please take care of your hearings and do not take things for granted as silence and tranquil is a blessing.

But the anxiety and depression could occur after the development of tinnitus. This is often the case with correlations -- you know the two things are related, but the sequencing of events when assessed through recollection (a retrospective study, for example) is often faulty. So in some cases, the anxiety and depression could be a result of the tinnitus, not the cause. It's important to keep that distinction in mind. You need a longitudinal prospective study to sort out cause and effect.

It’s funny; I’m watching this in the middle of the night - as my tinnitus is extremely loud right now. Being linked to depression or emotional distress honestly makes a bit of sense the more that I think about it though. I got this months ago, and it’s basically been from one source of stress to the next since then. I don’t listen to loud music, and the only issues with my ears that I’d ever had before this were ear aches from not cleaning my ears - 8 years ago - and my ears being naturally sensitive. Mental stress is the only cause that really makes sense at this point, since even after 3 trips to the ENT, they’re still seeing nothing. I’m also getting an MRI soon as one final check to see if my ears are really fine, or to find the cause of the Tinnitus. Gah

Hey bud, I feel for u. I just left a comment above you experiencing tinnitus for the first time. It’s horrible. My ringin/ buzzing was loud and I can’t imagine living with it. I’ve been stressed too and did hours of research during my 4 hours of tinnitus before I went to bed. It has nothing to do with your ears. Remember that! It’s an inflammation of your brain. Try sleeping for a long time. Maybe u did, I don’t know, but I dot 12 hours of sleep after almost staying up all night the night before and it went away after 16 hours. Maybe because of your stress, you haven’t been able to sleep. Not encouraging drug use, but try taking some Xanax one night, mask the sound and let your brain sleep. Relax with positive thoughts and let the stress leave your body. I’m no doctor, just trying to help as I feel for u. Try it! Best of luck..

That, and my ears never staying popped has been bothering me worse than the tinnitus has.

There is no cure - yet many blogs on You Tube stating they have a cure for it! What upsets me is that no one can see your defect and many make fun of me in the Tinnitus effecting my hearing, lack of hearing! It also effects ones concentration and one trying to get too sleep! Wouldn't it be great/fun to be able to transfer ones tinnitus hearing to others, so they can hear in what us suffers are going through! Even for just an hour, respect then maybe given? Great honest blog - Many thanks!

I've had a high pitched ringing in my ears for several years now. I discovered by accident that if I cup my hands firmly over my ears and open and close them every few seconds (making a kind of wah wah noise) for 30 seconds or so, that the tinnitis reduces quite a bit. I do this at night if I'm having trouble getting to sleep. It's only temporary but it reduces the noise enough for it not to be overpowering. I've never mentioned this to anyone so can't be sure if it works for anyone else. Try it, maybe it will work for you.

My tinnitus has gotten so bad that I was having trouble falling asleep at night. It was manageable during the day because there were other sounds and noises going on, but when I lay down and try to go to sleep all I could hear was the ringing. I happened to stumble upon a AMSR KZfaq video for sleep. This particular one had crickets chirping like a soft summer night sound and an occasional owl hooting. I tried several of these and finally found one where the pitch of the crickets was the same pitch as my tinnitus and they cancel each other out. Luckily this is a 12 hour sleep video so I can turn this on and sleep all night without the screaming in my head!

I noticed that quitting caffeine lowers my tinnitus considerably. I've had it for over15 years in the right ear, it started after a bad ear infection. It's a very high pitched white noise type sound, exactly like what you hear the day after you go to a rock concert or night club. It's been stable however and I don't think I have much hearing loss if at all. It used to stress me out a lot because I thought it was a precursor to deafness but I saw a doctor and she told be the 2 were not necessarily related. Now I mostly don't notice it unless I'm thinking about or I drink a lot of alcohol or smoke weed.

I've had tinnitus my whole life, and the noise is constant. I can remember sitting on the couch when I was 4 or 5 just listening to what I thought, at the time, were my ears. My tinnitus sounds like the old CRT TVs--the ones that have the big picture tubes--when they're first turned on and are warming up. Since I've always "heard" the noise, it's never adversely affected me.

I am in my 70's and have had tinnitus since my high school days. I realized long ago the affliction came from my shooting on the school rifle team. Back 60 years ago, we did not realize the danger of even the sound of a 22 rifle affecting our hearing. Being right handed, my left ear was closer to the muzzle, so my left ear is the worse. Later in life, I very stupidly went shooting with a friend under a metal roof at the range, again without thinking about hearing protection. WOW did the bang from our deer rifles, crashing back from that roof hurt my ears. The tinnitus became much worse right away from that. It has been about 30 years. I have learned to ignore the constant ringing and it does not affect my sleep. The biggest issue is hearing my Wife talk. Her voice has been proven by a hearing specialist to be in a range I have the greatest trouble hearing. Yet, I can walk through the forest near my home and hear all the sounds the animals, birds and light wind make. I observed a comment from a man who drank a table spoon of cider vinegar in another comment here. I will try it and let him know if it works for me.

The times I'm most aware of it are after my body has been cold by being outside in the cold, especially after swimming in the ocean. Of course, in any situation where the topic of tinnitus comes up, then there it is, I hear it, it's fairly loud, like right now. I just gave it no attention until I reminded myself I have it. I have had tinnitus for many years. I always wear ear defenders when operating machinery or when for example mowing the lawn. I live in a rural area which is very quiet. Occasionally my tinnitus disappears for a day or two and I am blessed with true silence but it gradually returns. I have noticed it comes back, or gets worse, after long car journeys with prolonged cruising at steady speeds. I am convinced that, although a motor vehicle is modern and seems quiet the acoustics within some vehicles may have high energy standing waves that have the potential bring on my tinnitus.

The Temporal lobe is a significant part of the limbic system. Now there is some truth in what he says however he is really discussing what increases the tinnitus and gives advice regarding reducing it and NOT what causes it and why it stays. There are so many causes apart from continuous loud noise. Meniere’s disease, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders, Head injuries etc. blood vessel disorders linked to tinnitus, medications that can cause tinnitus, head injuries, ear bone changes and so on. Why it continues has to do with 'MALADAPTIVE NEUROPLASTICITY' and the basic function of the central nervous system. I've written a paper as part of my research 'MALADAPTIVE NEUROPLASTICITY AND IT’S RELATIONSHIP WITH AUTO NEUROSENSORY FUNCTION'. I am working on a therapy system to eradicate tinnitus [in some instances and/or considerably reduce it] and will be starting clinical trials on the 1st of July. I will keep everyone posted.

So I constantly massaged my ear by using coconut oil and working my finger deep in the whole and working it out and wide. And then get behind the ear where it joins to the skull and get in there. Keep at it. It's taken me months of every day work but it's almost all better.

I developed tinnitus a couple years ago seemingly randomly. No hearing loss. It was very bad at first, I heard multiple different pitches and wooshing, which were different in both ears. It has somewhat subsided over the years, I can live with it as It is though.

When I asked my GP about it he told me it would eventually go away as I lost my hearing in my old age. The chiropractor made a comment about going to too many rock concerts while I was young, I’ve been to maybe three in my entire life. I’ve been suffering for about 20 years and mine is in both ears and a constant staticky tone. When other noises are prevalent, I don’t hear the sound.

My tinnitus started in my left ear as on and off ringing in one ear after my very first DVT and no hearing loss, then after my final DVT it became apparent in the other ear, and at the start, it was disturbing so much so that it caused years of Vertigo and Meniers disease, loss of hearing. I have suffered also from panic and serious anxiety attacks. I have hearing aids but they do not help with the tinnitus! I attended as a one of patient a group for tinnitus sufferers as their is no cure for it! I have had loads of hearing tests with audiologists whom point out my deafness. I cannot hear so well the normal auditory noises that I'm supposed to hear, but hear the workings of internal machinery and know when an airplane or helicopter is due to fly overhead, because I hear it at a long way off, in short I hear the pitch of noise that others do not hear at all...strange but true! Tinnitus leads to a lonely life, because I've spoken to others with the disorder and they say the same, people have not got the patience to put up with us, or to speak on a level we can understand by talking one on one close by, preferably looking directly at us. In groups of people all talking at once, this sounds like being underwater or gobbly gook. Hearing aids unless having a component that facilitates tinnitus does not help but amplifies the condition which is permanent! The hospital group I attended many years ago after getting over disturbing vertigo attacks said that treating the tinnitus as a friend rather than an enemy would keep the tinnitus at a level of non disturbance..I tried this and it worked. Tinnitus that is raised to a level so high pitched as to almost drive one crazy is an eg of something not being right inside our bodies, and is alerting our attentions to this fact! Years ago the high pitched frequencies did disturb me so much so that I had to sleep with the radio on low to absorb the background noise..In todays age the tinnitus is very bearable.. Meditation is relaxing and helps me a lot! High frequency noises are a hazard as is music played too high, this sets off the tinnitus. In the daytime I have to listen to moderate to low radio waves which help me forget I have the tinnitus buzzing away....it sounds just like static electricity from pylons...buzzing equally in both ears 365 days all around the clock! Non stop. If for any reason the frequency is raised so too is my reaction too it, it means I'm becoming stressed by it, and something isn't right somewhere in my body! At the moment it's levels are bearable! Unless someone actually has tinnitus themselves with hearing loss, they will never understand how a permanent sufferer feels, and will suggest clueless remarks to them! This condition and others I have through no fault of my own, has left me at odds with many people including family members whom do not understand it at all! I find enjoyment in my alone time and with the many hobbies I have, as opposed to being around others! I have been accused of being aloof and standoffish, not completely true, but of which I largely ignore, because I'm fed up of having to repeat myself! Thanks for sharing!

I've never known a moment of true silence in my life. As far back as my childhood, I always heard a certain, high pitch. The nurse in my elementary school would tell my mother I had hearing loss. I didn't. The tone they were saying I had missed was in actuality the one I always heard, so I disregarded it in the hearing test. The last time I spoke with an ENT specialist about my tinnitus was extremely frustrating. After several hearing tests, he told me to do my best to ignore it and sent me on my way. It's fascinating that it has now been found to be originating in the brain, rather than the ear.

I have had tinnitus for about 20 years. After 10 years, I figured out it was due to a reaction to food. After that, I realized it flared up if I had a lot of alcohol, carbs, or sugar. I've been trying to figure out what herb, vitamin, or nutrient could counter it. I tried everything, and it would not go away. I knew it was some sort of inflammation due to my diet. Then one day, out of nowhere, I woke up, and there was no ringing. But how? I ate ice cream and had a beer the day before. My ears should be screaming. Then it hit me - I had been taking a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar for a few nights. It was somehow toning down my ringing. By the third day - it was silent. I need to keep investigating this - but it seems it has something to do with it. Right now, I have a very low ringing, but I haven't had any Apple Cider Vinegar in a day or two. If you try it and it works, please let me know. Cheers

I have had years of bloating issues and I think I am lactose intolerant, so I am hoping cutting it out will reduce my inflammation and help my tinnitus.
