Spider Plant Care Guide and Repot - Chlorophytum Comosum
Grab Your Own Spider Plant Here: geni.us/SpiderPlants
Today we’re going to be talking about the spider plant - Chlorophytum Comosum and then I’ll be doing a re-pot for it.
The spider plant is an easy species to care for which makes it great for beginners.
Like many houseplants, they originate From South Africa and were first introduced into Europe at the end of the 18th century.
The usual white and green leaf colour we normally associate with spider plants is actually a variegated cultivar, the original plant was entirely green in colour.
It can be propagated by division of the main plant or from the little plantlets that are produced from the long thin branches known as stolons.
So for the care guide:
Sun: Bright indirect sunlight, keep away from hot sunny windows as it will scorch the leaves.
Watering - not fussy, water regularly, test the soil and water when it starts to feel dry. Will tolerate drying out occasionally.
Soil type: normal houseplant mix is fine
Feed monthly in the growing season - spring summer autumn with general houseplant liquid feed.
Pet safe: Yes, the spider plant is actually edible! And so if your cat starts chewing on the leaves it won’t get sick.
Other notes: Susceptible to brown leaf tips, this is quite normal and is due to drying out for too long, low humidity and even a build-up of salts found in tap water. To avoid this you can use filtered water, R.O water, or even the wastewater after cleaning your fish tank, you can use a humidity tray to help raise the humidity and mist your plant regularly but the main thing will be to keep on top of your watering, but it doesn’t really harm the plant if you get a few brown tips you can just snip them off with a pair of scissors to tidy them up a little.
Repot only when pot bound and roots are visible outside of the pot, this plant is quite happy being restricted slightly and it won’t harm it at all.

I had no idea that the green variety was the original. I actually have some solid green ones growing in the ground in zone 9a. They love the high humidity where I live and don't seem to mind the heat as long as they're not in direct sun. In winter, they'll die back when it freezes, but always come back out in spring. I only discovered this after a couple of the plantlets took root on the gravel patio that it's pot was sitting on. When I moved the pot, I just cut the plantlets off and left them in the ground. I later purposely planted some of the variegated varieties in the ground and around the patio. After a few winters, a couple of which were in the single digits Fahrenheit for a day or two, I've noticed that the solid green ones are the most hardy. They're a definitely a fun and surprising plant to grow.

They are very stong plants so don't worry too much, it takes a lot to kill a mature Spider plant so nothing to worry bout. They are quite happy in a pot for many years so if you are going to repot just make it a little bigger maybe half inch / 1cm all round.use general purpose houseplant soil and just carefully remove old pot, dust off old soil and put new soil in the new pot. with the spider plant and water well afterwards. Simple! :-)

Really enjoyed your video thank you. I found it so much nicer, easier and way more informative than the others I’ve watched. What would you recommend to keep a spider plant bushy? Yours looks so beautiful and full. I’ve been propagating the babies and adding them back to the main pot with the mother plant but the roots are already taking up a lot of space and I’m worried the new babies are going to start struggling to find space to grow. It doesn’t seem ready for repotting but also is not very bushy at all

I'm determined to grow one of these. I've had 2 before & legit killed them both lol. I think my problem was over watering. A spider plant was one of my first ever houseplants a couple of years ago & at the time I used to over water all of my plants & they all started to get root rot & all their leaves started to fall off. I'm a bit better now, so I'm going to buy another & crack it! Thank you for this :)

Just do the finger test - stick your finger in the pot and when it's 3/4 of the way dry water it. Some people go buy a schedule - you know water once a week - don't do that! When plants dry out - they dry out. I put rocks in the bottom of my pot for drainage - just enough to cover the holes, just something I've always done. Good luck.

Nice video. Just one suggestion... have the new pot with soil standing ready. Watching you calmly talking about the soil with roots exposed felt like someone explaining how to clean a fish tank with the fish laying out on the table. Haha... and water a transplant in immediately. Your plant was okay, it wasn't out too long and I'm sure you watered it soon. But just as a habit, it's important to avoid roots' drying out. Since this is a beginner video, and keeping roots moist at all times is very important, I think it would be good to include that.

Good point, thanks for your comment, Spider plants have thick roots that store water, they won't suffer like some that have thin delicate roots but as you say it's good practice to get them into the soil ASAP. One day I will be more organised! :-)

The good news Thomas is that these Spider planst are really not too fussy about their care and you will probably do more harm over watering than under watering with this plant, so stick your finger on the soil and when the top 2cm or inch gets dry then you can water again. Very roughly once a week you wont go far wrong.

Just time, if you have it in the same pot for a few years it will probably be getting a little crowded, if you scrape away some of the soil and the roots are cose to the surface thats another indication. Luckily Spider plants are pretty robust so they will survive in most conditions as long as you water them from time to time.

They might have already been on the plant when you bought it or even in the soil, its a good idea to keep new plants away from your othr plants for a week or two just in case it is infected. You can buy a multi-purpose houseoplant bug spray that will kill pests o your plants, spray this onto your plant every few days until they are all gone.
@thomasgotsch102

Hey. Those are called fungus gnats, and they live in the soil. Getting rid of them in two ways is the best, multifaceted approach. First, get a small container (like a salad dressing Tupperware cube) of apple cider vinegar and add a drop or so of dish soap. Be sure you can still smell the cider vinegar, and not the soap overpowering it. Leave that in the open container close to the plant. This will draw in and drown the adults. Don’t worry, you won’t smell it unless you put your nose next to it. It’s quite mild. Next, for the larvae in the soil, take some isopropyl alcohol (store brand is fine) and pour it into the soil. It will sanitize the soil and rip the larvae/eggs apart, and breaks down into oxygen which the plant will love. Do these two methods, give it time, and your plant will be free of fungus gnats.
@thomasgotsch102

I gave one of these to a girl years ago and she killed it. Turns out if you don't care about plants you don't care about plants! These are hard to kill because of the bulbs down in the soil that look like onions help to retain water. I saw another comment on another Channel where they said it takes a lot of nerve to admit you killed a pothos. So funny. I told them I could see that on a t-shirt.

I didn’t know that Mr C, you taught me something there, I noticed the “onion” like roots when I repotted this one but that’s the first time I’ve ever noticed them and now I know what they are for! Thanks! 👍

It's quite a tolerant plant as long as you water it occasionally and feed it sometimes it should do quite well.

I am thinking of getting a spider plant. They are absolutely brilliant when you see them with all their little babies hanging down. I just have to work out if I think I would be able to keep it going in the Winter. My question is this though. I heard someone say that you can have a male or female plant so if you have not got the female you are not going to get the babies. Is this true and if so is there any way at all on knowing when you are purchasing one?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
You should! They are really easy to keep so I don't think you will have a problem with them over the winter, very tolerant of different conditions. I've honestly not heard that about getting either a male or female plant, it doesn't quite make sense to me because as far as I know most plants have both male and female "parts" so I wouldn't expect you to get either one or the other generally.

@@HouseplantHacks ahh right. Thanks. I saw a nice one in my little plant shop for 5 euros. I will have to check him a bit closer because that does seem cheap even for here. He was a good size. I think if he is OK then I will get him tomorrow as I know just the place for him and just keep an eye on him in the winter and bring him into another room if he starts getting sad as where he is going will have no heating at all in winter and be very cold

Hey! Spider plants aren’t like traditional crops (like tomatoes or corn) that require pollination. Spider plants create offspring asexually, and they are exact clones of the parent plant. In order to create a new variety of spider plant, you would have to do more than that.

Yes, too much water? Too little light, not enough water? Change one thing that you think is most likely and see if it perks up after a couple of weeks, if not try the next most likley thing and so on.

pssst! pssst! Who's there? Over here! Oh! Mister spider plant what ya doing? I think Andy's asleep by now. Ask him if I can have a hanging basket. Well... That all depends on whether he's got a place to hang you - you have to drill a hole in the ceiling! Maybe someday. Tell him to get one of those bird cage holders made of iron! Now that's interesting! You know you're lucky to be in the house at all you are a SPIDER plant after all! You're not helping! Oh sorry!
