Have you spent 3 hours cleaning of the excess mortar inside yet? That’s the job I least enjoyed building mine! 😂
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
I probably haven’t cleaned enough off but I did sponge a fair bit off as I went so maybe that saved me a bit of cleaning at the end
@Mike-Diamond Жыл бұрын
@@SamDaviesBuilder I was able to clean until I got to row eight. At that point, I used a fibreglass dome to set the bricks, which blocked access to the inside. I then had to wait 24 hours before I could clean the brickwork, by which time it had set like stone. The whole build is on my channel if you're interested.

@@Mike-Diamond I will check out some more of your oven videos! The fibreglass dome sounds like a good idea, I used sand but it was a pain to clear out afterwards

And that’s a caster without the wheel isn’t it? I’m looking at building one.
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
Yep you've got it! They work well. One thing to note, when you close the dome in to the very top you want a different shape so the top isn't as much of a curve. A few people have told me this makes the heat distribute better so it's worth looking into. I have just got a fibreglass former to build over and remove after its set for the very top of my next dome

What is that tool that you’re using for laying the bricks? The one that’s acting like a compass…?
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
I call it the 'indispensable tool'. It is a castor wheel (same as off a trolley) with the wheel part taken off and a piece of wood bolted to it. It can then rotate and give the circular shape

Pizza oven with hemispherical domes are not the way to build. It had to be a paraboloid

So flatter on the top of the dome and not a even curve is it?

It's one way to build one... The other way, much more easy and no need of special tools from the cosmos, is to simply dump a mount of sand to the desired internal dimensions you need... you then lay your bricks along with the mortar around it.. All you need to do next is get the sand out...
@SamDaviesBuilder8 ай бұрын
The way you suggest is certainly do-able but the sand can compress differently as you place the blocks around it and inside where you can’t see because of your sand you may get steps in the bricks. You’ll only spot those steps at the end when the sand is out. Also you can’t ensure your joints on the inside face are full and tidy until the end when you’d have to get inside, clean off any mortar sticking out and fill the joints that were not full. I use sand at the end of the dome when it gets too steep to get the bricks to hold but it’s horrible climbing inside to tidy all the bricks up once the sand is out and that’s just doing the last few courses. If you did the whole dome like that it would be a nightmare! Hope you can see my points…

@@SamDaviesBuilder It works. I've done 3 of them. Close off the opening then for the final shaping use a little cement with fine sand then it sets. Easy Peasee Lemon Squeezy.
@SamDaviesBuilder5 ай бұрын
@@brikkijim how do you ensure the bricks are tidy inside as you can’t get to them until the whole lot is finished and you dig the sand out?
@brikkijim5 ай бұрын
@@SamDaviesBuilder I cut each piece extremely close. The fireclay is fairly soft until fired. I scrape clean. I also parge dome with fireclay heatstop 50. I had one that still has parge for over 15 years. Just don't touch it.

Greate job, can you please tell me name of the materials you have used and mix ratio
@SamDaviesBuilder5 ай бұрын
Mix ratio is 1 fondu cement, 2 fireclay and 2 sand (I think!). Ceramic board then firebricks as a base, firebricks for the walls then ceramic blanket to wrap outside of walls. Mesh on the blanket then a few layers of perlite mixed with cement. All the materials I mention will be mentioned in the long version of this on my channel

are those 1/2 bricks? 1/3? i wonder if i can build this using full sized one that are laid similarly.

They are half bricks, you have to cut them in half to get the curve. Then there’s angles cut off them as the curve tightens
