Comedian Hari Kondabolu is taking on Apu, the Indian convenience store owner on "The Simpsons." He explains how the character has reinforced negative stereotypes about Indians for decades.

Apu’s character is literally making fun of Indian stereotypes, it’s not pushing them. Remember that the Simpsons was meant to be a rejection to 80s sitcoms with the happy families with the stereotypical outside but with more nuanced behaviour underneath. That’s why Apu is seen as one dimensional on the outside but is actually has a lot more depth. Same with how marge is seen as a one dimensional house wife on the surface but actually has more depth when you realise the nuance of the characters. You literally missed the point of 30 years of a show

@Kamgolf6 жыл бұрын
I think some racist bullies called this guy Apu during his school years and he’s angry at the character for that bullying. Here’s the thing racists will never see nuance in a character that pokes fun at stereotypes by both exaggerating them and showing you that there is an actual problem with underemployment for immigrants which is a real life problem Apu is a brilliant man with a PhD in computer science but he’s stuck running a convenience store because often times skilled immigrants are not given a chance to work in their field. But anyone who is ignorant just see the accent and play that up and use that to discriminate. As a south Asian I never had or have had a problem with the character as I can see the nuance and also they poke fun at stereotypes for all races and faiths e.g Luigi the pizza parkour owner, etc.

So it's not like Apu is the only one who's comedic character and it's not about race, either. And it's not like both of those characters (Skinner and Apu) don't have any depth to them. Apu had a lot of moments in the show, but you can't demand Apu to be put on the pedestal and get more screen time just because he is a minority.

Most Indians come here legally and lose tons of time, energy, money, and most that I know end up becoming doctors, engineers, CPU programmers, bussinessmen doing accounting or yes, convenience stores (BUT many are not Indian but middle eastern). Simpsons is funny, but they over do the sterotypes with him, many times it is faulty/negative. They can do what ever they want, but it dont make it right. and they wouldnt dare do negative stereotypes on black people. they get away with it only on white people or tiny minorities of USA like Indians. apparently, shows/comments on youtube etc. can be racist like that.

I refer to this "but they over do the sterotypes with him, many times it is faulty/negative." Yet most of Simpson's stereotype are mostly to Homer (White, middle class job, stupid husband), Lisa (A liberals wannabe), Bart (douche white psycho bully) and Marge (White housewife). And mostly satire about white people around them. I don't think it's over do Apu relatively to what they did to White.
@airplayrule6 жыл бұрын
Well you repeated stuff i knew/implied and ignore other logic/details i said again and still won't tell me why so i give up and move on. perhaps u should read my comment in full next time. hint: it ends with "they get away with it only on white people or tiny minorities of USA like Indians. apparently, shows/comments on youtube etc. can be racist like that." notice how i pointed out white people too, and even if i didnt, it wouldnt change much, since my points about faulty/negative stereotypes for Indians on the Simpsons and anything else i said was still logical/factual. they probably have more stereotypes, especailly faulty ones, on Indians, more than any other race. anyway youre not getting it and this a waste so im done reading your comments. bye.

The whole entire show is a stereotype. I can go on and on about the stereotypes, but that would take too long. I'll just give some examples. Homer is a bald and fat man who works at an industrial company and drinks a lot and has the average american family. That's a stereotpye! Cheif Wiggum is the local donut-loving cop who's chubby. That's a stereotype! Monte Burns is the cliche old man who's rich and has a grumpy attitude. That's a stereotpye! But now when there's an Indian stereotype, it HAS to be racist! Back in the early days of the Simpsons, we didn't care about the foreign country stereotypes, but NOW we think it's racist! Jesus, if you have personal reasons for hating the show just for that one character, don't watch the show if it comes to those requirements! Don't document on TV your hate for it because you're spreading controversy on a cartoon character that's a "meant-to-be-for-fun" indian stereotype. I'm sure the writers didn't want to intend any harm. They just wanted to make a couple of jokes, and now he's taking it as a racist joke, even though this show has been on air for what, 30 years or so? I honestly think America's people are getting soft... Jeez I wasted 30 minutes of my life writing this comment.

I am an Indian-American. Born and raised in the USA 🇺🇸 and extremely thankful for that. I’m also very proud of my Indian 🇮🇳 DNA. I’m generally pretty liberal on most things. But who is my God? I worship the God of Comedy. And The Simpsons were the God of Gods. Apu was a FANTASTIC character. The episodes that revolve around him were brilliant. A few times growing up, I would hear some annoying “swishee Kwik e mart” type comment. I can understand that being annoying if that happened more often. But that’s not the fault of the writers. That’s just due to the fact that, like Springfield, society is just full of imbeciles. Hari Kondabulu is free to express his opinion. What bothers me is how everyone just ASSUMES that this is how all Indians must feel about it. The episode where Apu gets married should be mandatory viewing for everybody that has an opinion on him, one way or the other. Watch that, and then come back and speak to me.

He is a hard working guy with faults, doing a good job that people in most societies look up to. There is nothing racist about him. Not all Indians or any other people can be highly paid computer scientists lawyers or presidents most like for every other group need to to normal ordinary people;'s jobs. I think he is a positive thing, and he promoted indian culture in a good way, I am Scottish and pride in Simpsons having Groundsman, and also Star Trek scotty, Indians should pride in this guy yes india is bigger than scotland but india has less of a real modern hiostory with the usa than Scotland, so should be hono9ured to have such a character in such a great comedy,

The guy claiming to be Indian is actually Pakistani by his accent, having met both in their country of origin.

so its a guy who work at a convenient store who is ethnic with a thick accent, I think apu is not really a knock back to Indian Americans is it

At least half of all the clerks at the gas stations and convenience stores I visited in California (and I lived there for almost four years) was an Indian. The last two clerks at the gas stations I visited here in Colorado (40 miles apart) were Indian. The Indian as convenience store clerk stereotype is not so contrived.

This is absolute nonsense! I'm a gay man so I should be offended by the Simpsons at the same level Indians are when they satire gays? This guy did all this for publicity and if he didn't he is simply ignorant. For instance, by his logic, only an Indian should voice Apu. By that same logic, how would a story about a closeted gay man ever be told ... Smithers? How would they cast a closeted gay man to voice Smithers? As soon as they took the job they would no longer be closeted. Where does this stop? Bart is voiced by an old woman, Lisa isn't voiced by a kid, the guy doing Homer isn't fat, the guy doing Mr. Burns isn't over 100, etc. It's all nonsense and to quote Lisa in the episode, 'Lisa the Iconoclast', "She (he rather) called me a PC thug!"

The Apu controversy proves that society is being shaped by whoever complains the most. Ned Flanders is the most offensive stereotype on "The Simpsons" in my view, but Christians don't care, so no one cares. There's no rhyme or reason to this stuff.

I used to watch the Simpsons A LOT when I was a kid and now I 'm 100% convinced that every Indian-American owns a convenience store, they all have octuplets, they all drive sports cars and they're all named Apu. It's really sad when a show is pushing such harmful stereotypes.

The Simpsons are literally a stereotypical white family, Flanders is a stereotypical Christian, Willie is a stereotypical Scot and so many more. I'm a Eastern European (Balkan), we don't even have a character in the show.
