I recently bought a small commercial building built in 1928 with a two-pipe steam heat system. This was a perfect introduction to my heating system. Thank you for making this excellent video.

i'm one of this type, that will be using a ball float steamtrap on my radiators, because steam piping, fittings and valves is my greatest passion. Please do a lot more steam boiler and valve room tours.

The steam traps, as I understand it, stop the steam escaping when they expand. When they sense less than 212F/100C, they contract and open up to allow the condensate out, then the steam comes back which is 212/100+ they shut to retain it and give it time to cool and condense.

I'm thrilled to see a few brave young people getting into a traditional business, understanding and passing on this information. Most people don't understand that this work is rare, and it's public service at its best. I'm most familiar with one-pipe steam and I needed a lesson on two-pipe traps for our 45-unit building here in Chicago. Thanks again.

Am really happy I could help!! That's why I made these videos for two reasons, one because it's an interest to me and I love working with these systems and two to help teach people about them. Thanks agian!

@@67tr876 What prompted you to get into this business? You could have done something like computer programming or college teaching. Certainly demand for boiler work in a big city will not slow down for decades, but was that your motivation?

@@peterzelchenko My dad was a building manager and we lived in the building he ran so as a child he would teach me about all the old systems and such and I grew an interest and long be hold I wanted to run my own building and learn about all the systems. so here I am today doing just that and still working my way to building manager.

Love it!....Very good explanation.I have always been fascinated with boilers etc...Interesting about the steam traps and vacuum tank ....Now I know more about those convector units and the steel cases they are inside of..and when they began using them.I wonder if they are more efficient than the cast iron ones?.....

Thanks for the video, I replaced a steam valve cut off in one the three radiator, now the radiator wont get hot, I suspected the rust from the old valve has fallen inside the pipe, how do I clear the pipe? have you come across this problem before? it is a 2 pipe system

What are the symptoms when a trap fails to open and release the condensate? Water hammer?

Is it true that in a steam system you can't regulate down your radiators, so they work on e.g half power or 1/4? Do they have to be fully off or fully on?

Excellent video. I have a question. What would be the cause of 1 out of nine radiators not working properly? I had steam to valve. but not going past. I removed valve assembly from radiator and the valve was stuck closed. I fixed that and now only 1/3 of the radiator heats up. I removed the steam trap to see if that was the problem but no avail. Any suggestions??
