This has to be one of the most straightforward explanations of a VVT on the internet. Really good description of how it works. DIY mechanics shouldn't be fearful of tackiing this job. Thanks for sharing

Can't thank you enough. I hv been suffering with frequent CEL n limp mode for the last 3 months. No service centre nor "expert" mechanics could diagnose the cause (even with official scanning). Their conclusion was the ECU is kaput n i ought to buy a new one. After sumbling on to ur video today i opened and cleaned the turbo myself and the issue is fixed. THANK YOU.

Important to keep in mind: the turbo spins at over 120 thousand rpm, which is 2000 revs per second. A tiniest scratch, nick or bend on the turbine or compressor wheel will throw it out of balance, meaning reduced rpm of the turbo, and damaged turbo bearing.

By far, the best video explanation I've seen of how these turbos work and why they have issues. I was hoping the notchiness I felt in the actuator moving was from the actuator rod, unfortunately it's coming from the actuator lever on the turbo/vanes. After watching this, I'm way more confident cleaning the turbo. Thanks!

"LIMP MODE" I subscribed instantly after you explained that, I've been having the issue you describe on my Open/Vauxhall Signum 3.0 V6 CDTI 03, I'm a newbie to turbos and all the mechanics around here say don't touch it and buy a new one but I want to learn more about the unit and how to fix it myself, brilliant video, thank you

Personally, I would find a replacement out of a salvage yard. Then take that one apart and study it. Clean it and buy a rebuild kit. Then when you take your old one off you already know what you need to do. Good luck on that beauty!

Brilliant video. Answered my question where all other forums failed, and that is "there is no wastegate in these type of turbos". I have been searching for info on the Vito 111 cdi wastegate all week after reading on the Mercedes forum that this is the the reason my Vito keeps going into limp mode. The sticky actuator is for the variable vanes not the waste gate. I wish ill informed people would keep their mouths firmly shut !!

I used Winns turbo cleaner spray. Sprayed a whole can in the turbo while the engine was on idling. Gave it 10 min took it for a spin and i can't believe it did the job. Easy cheap fix. And no service gave me this cheap option it was a last resort thing to see if it worked. They wanted me to recondition the turbo...car works fine now.
@mevio46653 жыл бұрын
On which side of the turbo have you sprayed? Intake or exhaust? Did you leave it for 10 minutes at idle with the spray in? Thanks.

Super told. For the first time i had understand how it's work. Thank you. I have a issue with a overboost. I had mounted a gauge vacuum on the line to vaccum acuator. When i press the clutch i have a little to 90% vacuum and after small pitch the vacuum drop to 20 or 10. After 100km/h, i had limp mode with error overboost. It's seems that the vane are not clossing. The actuator moves ok, but as i understand from you, i can have that gap, that keeps the vanes open a little... Hmmm, i have to dismantle... In the summer i think... Thanks again...

Awesome video. I am buying a 2014 with tdi. As preventative maintenance i was looking into a rebuild kit for the turbo. Found many sites saying they are not rebuild able. Some said it takes special equipment to disassemble them. Finding parts may be tough but i see i can definitely disassemble it to inspect and clean. Look pretty easy. I have has variable geometry cummins turbos apart and this looks very different but not any more complicated at all. Is the nut on the compressor wheel left hand thread on these?
@L319DNHUSA6 жыл бұрын
I agree very good video. I have a question I took mine apart to clean it. Then when I put the ring back on that has the veins on it and tighten the screws down the veins will not move. So I wonder if I am tightening them too tight should they be allowed to float a little bit.. if you could get back to me ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

Super video, and great eksplanation.. My 2001 vw passat, shows low boost error p1556. And got no turbo power bellow 28-3000 rpm, so it could be that the wanes are stuck at the non vacum position?? I think i havea look at the actuator and see if itmoves when vacuum aplied, how much should it move?? About 1 cm?? Cheers Johan

My car goes into limp mode at low revs and is slow to accelerate. Even more so on hills.It is an 2003 e270 diesel. Does it sound like the veins are sticking to you? Great vide by the way.
@CoolAirVw6 жыл бұрын
At 13:09 the "control ring " is in upside down. The notch that the control lever sits in on the control ring sits between two holes. One is a "slot" and the other is a "round hole". The round hole should be on the left. I'm certain this will not allow correct amount of travel.
@Fizzer996 жыл бұрын
Can I use this turbo on a VW pertol 2L 8v? If I leave the actuator disconnected from a vacuum source, the vanes should be open to flow more freely for petrol engine's higher revs right? Then I just fit a wastegate.

Hi, i have a 1.6 HDI DV6 206 and I had DPF issues so I sent my ECU off for a DPF and EGR delete and a stage a map to a reputable tuner. My car now boosts whenever it want to and I have engine management light and boost too high on diagnostics. The car also smokes out black smoke under acceleration. It seems my turbo is spooling and not getting rid of the pressure. Would you say this is my problem ?

The lever doesn't goes down. No much play. Hissing completely goes off if no vaccum line. What do you think about this problem. I did block my EGR from the manifold.
