It’s 2014 and Adidas is struggling. The once-dominant sportswear company is now lost and directionless suffering through declining revenue and profits three years in a row. Outside of football, consumers don’t care for the brand, retailers are giving their most valuable shelf space to Nike, new products are flopping, and activists are threatening a hostile takeover if the CEO is not replaced within the year.
In this episode, we’ll cover Adidas, the fatal mistakes that its former CEO made which toppled the German brand to a distant third behind Nike and UnderArmour, sparked an investor battle, and ultimately cost him his job. @@casualsuede I still believe the conspiracy theory that Adidas wanted to butcher Reebok to boost the Adidas brand. It would make sense and it actually played out for them. Reebok was a major opponent of Adidas. Most people don't realize that Reebok was as big as Adidas and at some point even BIGGER than Adidas in the 90s. Very glad that Reebok has a new ownership now. I already feel like the brand is experiencing a slow renaissance. Hopefully it will be as successful as it was back in the day

reebok was amazing for a long while under adidas. the shoes were amazing quality for their price point and they eventually had their own version of boost that was very affordable called Floatride. I miss those brief couple years edit: i should agree with the other commentator that adidas did not know how to run Reebok but i won't deny the prices and quality was chefs kiss

I think a lot of these videos are US centric, because Adidas has always been big worldwide, especially in South America and Europe. Under Armour has never been a “big” make in Europe. Always been Adidas and Nike.

The e-commerce mistake was the biggest and most head scratching of all... Also the creation of brands like Adidas Neo which sponsored Justin Bieber was weird. You have originals already, why having a youth brand just for remakes of originals models?

Excellent analysis. It’s amazing to me that Hainer didn’t hyperfocus on existing Adidas and Reebok users and on what would make the product better for them. Not entering e-commerce early was arguably the biggest mistake made followed by paying such a high premium for Reebok.

It can really only be understated imo, how much value and growth Kanye West has brought Adidas as a brand. Not just because of his name and photos, but because of his designs. No matter what you think of him as a person, and his politics aside - He's a creative powerhouse. And even though he has had a few misses (or a lot, depending on who you ask) ...that's to be expected when your design work is so far away from the norm. But when he swung and finally hit a home run... Oh man! I mean, not only does it portray Adidas as a forward-thinking and trend-setting brand as a whole, but suddenly you'd see 60+ year old grandmas wearing Walmart copies of his Yeezy 350 shoes.

I remember before 2015, very few sneaker channels talked about Adidas, it was all about Jordan, Foamposite etc... well the big channels anyway. Boost and Yeezy really changed the game for Adidas.

I love Ultraboost shoes and they are still great but the reality is boost midsole is now outdated. The latest UB shoes are quite heavy and much firmer than the original UB, i.e. not the best in terms of comfort.

comfy soft soles are bad for your feet i tried barefoot walking after years of boost and my feet muscles were aching cause they were way to weak and i had a lot of stability problems that led to an ankle injury i would honestly stick to something more of the middle of the pack not too soft but not too hard either

People need to realize that Boost/Yezzy era was just that, era. People in North America should open their eyes to see that Europe has always embraced Adidas. Superstars, Stan Smiths, Gazelle, Samba, Campus, Forum, Rivalry, Top Ten, etc are signature Adidas staples. Not just Boost and Yeezy, when you get older you look for comfort and style. I switched over from Nike to Adidas back in 2008.

Looking back the history and the momentum that adidas gained on 2015. Im interested to see how 2023 onward goes for adidas. With cut off yeezy deals, oversaturated sneaker market with boost technology this surely would be a fit to watch.

I guess they will experience a recession like on the early 2010s. Maybe not as bad as then, because Ultraboosts and their retro sneakers are still very popular. But I doubt they will beat their 2015 dominance anytime near soon.

Adidas has been getting quite a lot of attention from the younger generation. Forums had been quite the success for the brand and styles like the Sambas, Gazelles and Spezials have become extremely popular on social media

To me it’s really weird, because I used to play handball in Spezials when I was younger and now I see them being praised by Americans. Forums are undeniably popular, I see them everywhere. Ultra boosts are hella outdated though, not gonna argue with that.

as a kid I never broke em, always outgrew them first. the only pair I've beaten enough was a pair of stans that has lasted me 4 years now. but ngl Asics just feel right on my feet, just nowhere near as durable as Adidas is.

Honestly, I feel there isn't much hype around Adidas anymore and the whole company does seem stale at the moment. The only shoe they make that has hype anymore are Yeezy's, they aren't known for anything else, and even the hype around these is down because of the restocks being too large. The video itself was very high quality though!

A great video about Adidas! The company went through a great transition. As a long time Adidas consumer I'd say Heiner wasn't a terrible CEO; he focused on high quality athletics which is the market Adidas thrived. I'm happy it wasn't a video bashing his management. Since 2015 their sales grew but the quality of their shoes diminished. I think it will continue to sell to consumers who enjoy buying trendy shoes but actual athletes will transition faster to Nike or UnderArmour who's focused on lighter and more durable attire.

Yes sir... Been using Adidas since I was in my teens, they still do make comfortable shoes and football boots. But when it comes to actual apparel, once I tried Nike and Under Armour I just couldn't believe how much more comfortable those felt compared to Adidas gear.

Great video. I 100% agree. They do need another visionary. For example, the direction to push UltraBoost to performance running shoes was and still is a terrible idea. People love the UltraBoost for the comfort and/or fashion. But Boost technology just can't compete with the modern foams out there in the market. It's too heavy and not as responsive. Even the vast majority of Adidas running shoes in the market right now have switched away from Boost and into LightStrike (and LightStrike Pro). UltraBoost 21/22 and even the monstrosity that is the 23 version are all heading in the wrong direction. The focus should be put back to lifestyle. They are doing that somewhat with the original model, but new models should also be lifestyle.

This is only relevant in America and to Americans. Adidas has always been bigger and more coveted in Europe and the UK and Kanye West didn’t do a lot to change that. The most important person that Adidas have had on their payroll for the past decade is Lionel Messi. His nemesis boots are so popular the general release colourways of _millions_ of pairs sell out in minutes in Europe. As for fashion/trends I see most people in my area in Stan smiths, spezials, gazelle’s and sambas. 350’s were a thing for kids (and I mean children not adults) maybe 4 years ago but I never see them anymore. You might see some new balance and puma but you only ever really see Nike on mums at the gym. My Dad has worn Adidas sambas with a full Beckenbauer since he was 16/17 and when he wears through his current lot he’ll go get some more and he’s almost 70. He doesn’t know who Kanye west is or what Yeezys are but he sure as hell knows the three stripes means quality. Adidas’s success has largely been down to the exceptional work they’ve done rereleasing older models/styles at a fair price point and at high enough quantities that they are attainable by your average person. Boost actually probably lost them money overall (it’s very heavy and isn’t as mouldable as other cushions limiting its functionality severely) and it’s one of the reasons they pivoted away from it so hard toward cheaper and more functional foams like adiprene and adiplus.

@@burrybondz225 didi you read the comment? for me as a brazilian, nike actually could make sucess in dominating our market, but mainly because of its 1996 deal with nike and lifetime deal with r9, in spite of that, adidas has never left our market nowadays having more clubs than nike itself (and its been like that for years). The point is that football alone can make insane amounts of revenue, since the world cup final has almost ten times the viewers of a superbowl final, even the champions league final has 3 times the viewers of a superbowl final, and this number would double if compared to nba finals as a whole, which means that usa market was an unnecessary goal, the problem with adidas revenue are mainly cause the prices are lower than nike in most of things

I remember buying Reebok shoes way back in 2014 and it was really nice to have a lifestyle atheleisure brand dedicated to comfortable walking that was not overpriced. It was not the pure comfort atheleisure nowadays but it was on to something. Nowadays Skeckers has definitely dominated that market in Asia.

for the potentially confused Asian watchers of the video, when the video says "Asia" it really means China. Football (or soccer for our American friends) is actually really big in Southeast Asia and Korea. It is only not popular in China, which I think is what the video is trying to refer to. Likewise, basketball is only huge in China. Other Asian countries definitely adopt it, but it's nowhere near the most popular sport in most Asian countries. I'm sure it's a honest mistake, but it's quite funny to hear these takes about "Asia" and then have the information to back it up stating China specifically. There are more Asian countries than just China y'know.

Adidas was popular in Europe by having a stranglehold on sports supply and selling to fans. Reebok had a stranglehold on sports supply and a massive potential customer base of fans of those sports. So naturally they dumped all that for CrossFit. The depths of some peoples incompetence is mind blowing.

They may have saved Adidas, but I think they’ll be just fine now without Kanye and ultraboost being less popular. They have so many cool models that are unique and innovative, unlike Nike with all their retros. When everyone (the general public) gets tired of retros, they’ll wanna find something new, and Adidas definitely offers that.

Doubtful of that. The thing with the Nike retros is that they become classic silhouettes that work. While I wear addidas because they are the most comfortable tennis shoes for me, addidas has never looked good outside of yeezies. They need someone and a silhouette to associate with the brand.

One of the great drivers of Adidas products were their designs. Even styles from 50 years ago. So when they reintroduced the Stan Smiths, the shoes were selling out at full retail. There was even a Boost version. The retro version even outsold the original run from the 70s. Moving forward, the Adidas/Gucci line will drive sales worldwide. Nothing new, as Adidas has partnered with Porsche design 20 years ago. Reebok as a brand will do great into the future as well. As long as the new owners keep marketing that brand of shoes as a trending innovative sportswear company.

Reebok Instapump and Asics Kayano series are by far the most comfortable shoes. The biggest problem with Adidas is it never caught the resellers market which Nike, and then New Balance and recently Asics is catching up.

I personally vibe a lot more with adidas these days. I like their designs a lot more these days and buy way too many of their clothes and shoes. Especially in their online store, which has the nice free shipping on orders over $50 and frequent sales. Reebok was just a silly move and adidas (and Hainer) could’ve focused more on itself in that time. Even if it was a surprise when I found out Adidas owned Reebok (like when the logo changed and I noticed the logo had 3 lines in it, I looked it up and realized). I loved their wave runner shoe as a child and would totally wear a yellow version of that shoe now!

that's it, adidas really needs a visionary, as nike has shown for the past year that sports and fashion go hand in hand, just see the soaring success of the nike dunks and jordans, while adidas is yet to launch a shoe as influential, people don't want to wear boosts anymore. They need an iconic silhouette that is timeless and marketed well

my entire shoe collection is all adidas, they have such crazy designs and all their shoes are comfortable af compared to nike idk why their so slept on
