Africa is changing so fast, it is becoming hard to ignore. In the short term the continent faces many problems, including covid-19, but in the long term it could rival China's economic might. Read more here: econ.st/2V8HGY9 doc

@@averyj5446 it is rather strange how African states are grouped up into one mythical entity. Most African countries themselves are less unified and homogenous than Europe, with often wildly different groups being in one nation. It's somewhat like grouping Russians and French people together, namely, it makes no sense beyond, " They're on the same continent."

@SCBM Yeah, I'd like to also say the continent of Africa, has a very wide range of climates, since it's very vertical on the map. It's very different from across, which mediates so much difference across each neighbour.

Ethiopia is not Africa... TITLE: How Ethiopia could one day rival China
@iberrypa
@iberrypa 4 жыл бұрын
Having visited Ethiopia i would bet all this takes place near the capital too. There is a huge amount of diversity in Ethiopia but most of the development is limited to certain areas. It might be the only realistic way to do it because of the high cost of infrastructure improvements like power and roads to support businesses. I would be worried about regional conflicts in Ethiopia starting again if the development continues to be so unequally distributed. China is also loaning a lot of money and if something like covid results in a real recession African countries could really struggle to make interest payments. Hopefully it all works out for Ethiopia and other African countries but I would think places like Vietnam and India would be lower risk, net better returns and generally be more likely to see rapid development like china did.

By educating their youngsters and stabilizing the basic infrastructures like roads and power supplies? As economic might (and increasingly as military might) China is quite unparalleled comparing to other Asian countries, though it doesn't necessarily give people the means to call China "all of Asia". Don't know then about the "dead continent" part, but normally big magazines have many writers that don't always have homogeneous opinions on things.

While I do have Ethiopian heritage and this makes me proud to see success stories coming from the city of Addis, the story is only about Ethiopia and not Africa as a whole. I am not the first to mention this, see comments below. The title is then misleading unless this is part of a greater set of stories about Africa, if so then ignore my rant. If that is not the case, then telling the story of Africa's success through the experience of only one of the many countries that inhabit the continent is simply rehashing an age-old mantra of the western media - simplify our view of Africa as a whole. In a nutshell, one country does not represent the continent. And most importantly, the continuation of the portrayal of Africa as one people instead of a dynamic patchwork of cultures and countries is laughable and irresponsible in 2020. C'mon Economist.

Unfortunately for them, they lack current information about the significant progress we have made over 2 decades in several spheres. China was ignored in the past and were seen as ' developing'. Today what is China place in the world? Africa looks to Asia for better deals instead of depending on western institutions such as IMF and WB. The point of the comparison is in relation to development, not the rather obvious fact theat Africa is a continent and China is a state. In the1990 China's GDP per capita was about double that of Africa, today it is almost 10 ten times greater (World Bank). To ask how Africa could achieve comparable prosperity is perfectly reasonable. PS: As a fully paid-up Anglo-Saxon, I know both how to speak and write in my own language; including the correct use of initial capitals with proper nouns, and the appropriate use of hyphens.

Thank you for the great work you guys have done at The Economist to create a video that highlights the various ways that Ethiopia, an African country, has made strides towards improving itself socially and economically. The statistics, individual stories, and analyses are enlightening. However, as has previously been mentioned in other comments, it would have been nice had you done the same for other countries around the continent in different geographic areas such as Egypt (North Africa), Nigeria and its focus on producing natural resources (West Africa), Kenya (East Africa), and South Africa (the region implied by the name). How these countries have grown and key areas where they could develop themselves further based on their current trajectory would be great to see in another video with a few personal entrepreneurial stories as examples. I love the work you guys are doing and I understand that such a video would probably need to be much longer and; thus, require a lot more work. I would still love to see something like that, though. Thank you very much for that analysis. Nigeria is a case in point. The government of Former President Goodluck Jonathan produced one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Guess what happened, the western countries, particularly former US President Obama threatened Jonathan with credible military force that he should hand power to Buhari. Guess what. Nigeria is now the no 1 country on earth to produce poverty. For every 1 barrel of oil the Nigerian government drill, the British gets 13 barrels of oil. How can a country develop like that. Nigeria is now an economic backwater of the world.

Years ago I read a science based article where it says the genetic variation between people of a single African village can literally encompass half the the world population. In essence Africa is not only diverse culturally but also Genetically among its people. The Media needs to recognize Africa is not homogeneous and it definitely should not be treated as such. If a certain solution works in Ethiopia it does not necessarily mean it can work in places like Zimbabwe, chad or Angola . Each country is unique. Ethiopia can definitely inspire other African countries to come out with their own solutions as it has for itself. Eventually all countries in the continent will be able to rise up and educate their populations while their economies blossom.

@@yogawan3805 by your logic, Chinese and Indonesian tribes also belong to the same Asian race since you grossly generalized the inhabitants of a *single continent* into a single race (Asian Race, African race, etc). That's kinda...., dubious and ignorant. there're lots of races/culture groups in a single continent and even in a single country there might be a number of different people group. Personally the broadest scope of a term "race" I'd acknowledge are based on cultures group with some distinct genetic difference, like Austronesians, Melanesians, Bantus, Khois, Turks and Mongols, etc. Beyond that it became an overgeneralization.

I like how the Economist, when portraying Chinese manufacturing, speeds up the video of assembly workers to insinuate they are working like drones or robots, and adds a sweet touch to the video with a low, rumbling ominous audio sound to portray a sense of unease or even doom. Polluting smokestacks video spliced in to add more dread is the cherry on the cake. Starts at 9:29. Yeah, not biased at all, Economist. FFS

As much as the stories are powerful, you can't just pick Ethiopia and hope it will represent the whole African story. I am Ethiopian and very proud of all of them. But this story telling is just bad.
