Africa is set to be the second fastest-growing economic region in the world - with four percent growth forecast this year. That's according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). While that sounds like good news, it's not guaranteed. African countries are still suffering the effects of the COVID pandemic, Russia's war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict. And let's not forget issues like climate change, increased food insecurity and political instability, creating further challenges.
Even Africa's largest economy Nigeria, has not been spared from high inflation. DW correspondent Olisa Chukwumah in Lagos, Nigeria, went to find out how people are struggling with the high cost of living.
It's a similar situation in Ghana - a country once seen as a model of African development.
To put things into perspective, the economy grew by eight percent in 2019, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
Fast forward to 2022, Ghana's currency, the cedi, plunged against the dollar and inflation shot to record highs above 50 percent. The resulting economic crisis forced Ghana to seek financial aid from the International Monetary Fund.
As the government battles the sky-high cost of living, some communities are trying to stay afloat financially. They are putting a fresh spin on traditional saving schemes. Maxwell Suuk reports from Northern Ghana.

African nations need to band together and create a unified currency, like the Euro. They lose a lot of value having to convert to/from one currency to USD for trade. Plus African banks need stricter regulations, right now they have exorbitant and greedy fees. I'm currently living in Zambia and for my bank account with ABSA, I pay monthly, quarterly and I believe yearly fees just to have the account. Add all sorts of transaction fees, atm usage fees etc, it's no wonder people are not able to save money. They are literal robber barons.

A unified African currency is a nice idea. All our western currencies are based on the dollar though afaik.
@ecofriend93
@ecofriend93 5 ай бұрын
@@Simp_Zone yeah, that's correct. The unified African currency would be for trade amongst the African nations primarily. Right now if Zambia wants to trade with it's neighbor, Tanzania, it has to buy US dollars (first point of loss) then Tanzania to put the revenue from the trade into national circulation has to convert from USD to local currency (second point of loss). Both times value is extracted from local businesses to foreign entities. As we say in Eastern Province, si cha bwino! (not good :) )

the difference between survival and being wealthy is knowing that not everyone should be growing their own food, some countries should specialize their economies to what they're best at. for example, somalia trying to be food self-sufficient is foolish. most of their country is a desert. however, somalia has excellent sea access, so they can specialize in fishing as well as building ports for trade. they can simply buy their food with foreign currency they earn from trading.

Ken Offorit-Atta, is a stable currency the same as a strong currency? In the context of currencies, stability and strength are related but distinct concepts. A stable currency is one that experiences relatively low volatility and fluctuations in its value over time. On the other hand, a strong currency typically refers to a currency that has a high exchange rate compared to other currencies. The latter is what we Ghanaians are expecting. Prices of products in the market have not changed and have rather skyrocketed despite the proclaimed stability of the Cedi.
@vincentb5119
@vincentb5119 5 ай бұрын
Quite debatable. Unless your economy is as robust as that of a developed nation and super power like the US, having a stable currency is the way to go. Advantages include cheaper exports relative to stronger currency economies. What our governments need to do is to take advantage of that situation and build a robust export base. This will bring in more foreign currency and stabilise the economy even further.

And there are 30 MILLION more people living in Nigeria since 2016. This instability can be blamed on the country and its inhabitants by putting so much stress on the nature and infrastructure with the constant increase of more mouths to feed. When they got their independence in 1960 they were 45 million people, now they are getting close to 250 million in a few years.

High inflation for most African countries is because they relay on imports. American inflation is not as high because imports only make up 18 percent of the economy. edit: Africa should not relay on food imports so heavily when it has some of the most Arable land in the world. Africa has enough arable land to feed the world let alone its own people.

Africa isn't a country. Economic decisions are made at a national level, not a continental level. For example, it is impossible for a country like Somalia or Mauritania to be self-sufficient in food, because their countries are mostly desert. Relying on imports for food is not a bad thing, America imports 90% of the food they export. The important thing is to specialize in an industry that can earn foreign currency reserves so that there's enough money to buy food.

The country is in chaos and everyone another country gets in chaos the currency would dive down. Would not be easy in Africa with so many conflicts in so many country’s. You see in Europe the northern and western country’s are stronger than the south (Spain, Italy, Greece) but even do there are differences it is by no means close to the chaos what some African country’s would put onto their currency if they had one

Because South Africa is doing so well since BRICS with shortages of everything..😂 Iran's Houthi terrorists are now making everything more expensive in the world by attacking trade routes. Russia is in war with Ukraine. China made a map claiming territory of Russia and India. BRICS countries are doing well.😂

DW why are you silent about the Amhara genocide in Ethiopia. There is a completely blocked/hidden genocidal war in Ethiopia. The govt with all its power has declared a war against Amhara civilians who were peacefully demanding for at least the govt to grant them the right to live, work in their own country. It is tragic really.

These are always great uplifting videos. Every time yet another African country is at the brink of economic collapse or political upheaval, you can always say to yourself, well at least I don't live in Africa. DW continues to think it is doing a great deed by informing the rest of the world of the plight of the many African countries, thinking they can improve their situation and make the world a better place. Too bad it's only useful for mocking the continent known as Africa. Maybe if they stopped blaming the West so much and instead actually faced the hard truths about their own culture and inherent dysfunction, maybe they might actually become civilized. Oh wait. Never mind. They are all persecuted minorities and it is never their own fault. 🤣
