Just learned my microwave’s range over top our stove top has been pulling air into the wall. My moisture meter is picking up water damage directly adjacent on the other side of the wall. It’s a nightmare and more people need to know how microwave exhausts can do this.

I just watched this vid again. Very thought-provoking. My wife and I have a very nice super-insulated, off-grid home with a wood cookstove. Own own woodlot means we have essentially zero heating costs. Although the home is passive solar, we depend on that stove a lot on those nippy winter days (down to minus 42C!). Well, wood burning appliances and airtight construction don't go together very well, as any depressurization results in serious (and instant) back-puffing of flue gasses into the living space. We knew this before we built, and simply crack a window every time we turn on the bath fan or central vacuum system. This year we intend to finally install a proper HRV system (yes, it should have gone in on day one) but I'd like to find a way to automate the system. In other words, I'd like the system to sense the interior air pressure and adjust the incoming air accordingly. My long-term goal is to make the house do all the thinking, because the occupants shouldn't need to always 'remember'. Great series of videos; keep up the good work!

GREAT video. This topic is covered by the Chimney Safety Institute of America who offers certifications for Chimney Pros and Dryer Vent Pros (like me!) and Down here in FL I think some of the issues we face primarily in the summer with a significant amount of condensation build up in people's vents and dryers even is sometimes (not always) related to this. It's something I've been trying to figure out. So, dryers produce negative air pressure (along with the other things you mentioned). Dryers as you may know require "make up air" which come from the surrounding vicinity of the dryer. have you found where, when a dryer is NOT turned on, but an AC system is on, that it's drawing so much pressure that it draws air from the outside through the dryer exhaust into the inside of the home? Any chance you guys know of any great articles or videos specifically on various ways/ scenarios dryers can be effected by negative / positive pressure?

Thanks for the information! Is there an effective way to create positive pressure in a home? Looks like attic fan system is the only way that we found. Great videos. I just don't see one specific to positive pressure.

Supply-only ventilation will positively pressurize a home. Either an Aircycler controlling an outside duct into the return plenum, or a ventilating dehumidifier like Broan/Santa Fe.

I live in a condo and whenever I turn on the fan above the stove or in the bathroom, odours from the unit above me come through the gas fireplace (they are heavy smokers). Your video just explained this phenomenon to me and why it happens - thank you! Next step is to understand what, if anything, I can do within my unit that can prevent it from happening. Is there a way to create a continuous positive pressure inside my unit and if so - what type of equipment is required - and is that a good idea to do (e.g. to live under constant positive pressure)?

My hot water tank was red flagged because it was backdrafting. It backdrafted when we ran the dryer or any fans in the house. I don't think this is normal. What could be the cause of this? Do I need to get an air exchanger to correct it if I can't find the cause?

What a great demo. Im alittle confused though, how did pressurizing the living room by turning on the fans coming out of the floor cause the chimney pipe to suck back into the living room. Sorry just trying to figure out what i missed. Thank you

So is there a "correct number" that a home's pressure should be most of the time? ie, obviously that number will change when people open doors, etc. Also my house gets waaaaay too much humidity in it. Someone said I might have too much negative pressure in the home; that the house is sucking in a lot of air from the outside.

I agree. If I had to err, I would err on the side of very slight pressurization, to stop appliances such as woodstoves, fireplaces (hate them!) and gas water heaters backdrafting. But in a poorly detailed home, pressurization will drive air and moisture into the envelope, causing condensation and major rot and mold issues. @@HomePerformance

Interestingly, I would actually suspect positive pressure instead. Or wind blowing on the rear face of the home.
@paulmaxwell8851

@@HomePerformance I agree. Cold outdoor air is usually dry air, whereas indoor air is moist. A slightly pressurized house is going to move that moist air into your door locks and that moisture will condense.

Hi thanks so much for this video I have a couple of question! A little background I am trying to solve trying to increase the pressure inside when outside pressure drops since the falling barometric pressure causes chronic pain in me (looking to see if I can maintain within a range) -I saw in your video that too high or too low of pressure wasn’t good for the house and I was wondering what those tolerances are as I mentioned I’d like to see if I can build something to decrease/dampen pain by reducing the rate of the pressure drop so maybe there are ways to increase the pressure tolerances? -separately I’ve been looking for a building scientist who has experience working in both a house and in a greenhouse (since im working on building a blend of the two) in case you know of anyone who you could refer for a project?

@@HomePerformance firstly thanks for responding secondly i meant what are the pros and cons for having a house with a positive pressure? I live in a very dusty/windy area and exhaust fans are a big entry point for dusty air to get in. Also if you were to run two different sized exhaust fans (kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans) At the same time the bigger fan would suck air through the smaller bathroom exhaust fan opening even if it’s on. I was thinking about replacing exhaust fans with just positive pressure…any thoughts on what could go wrong? Or what precautions should one take?

HELP! Great demo-house you built! Amazing. We have a 2 story house1940-50ish. No soffits, Brick house. 49 feet of ridge. 4 turtle vents. 2 tiny gable vents. Attic space only 36-42'' inches tall at ridge. Bat infestation. Removed all old insulation and ceiling drywall on second floor. New drywall, new insulations. Sealed every canlight and fire alarm boxes. Greatly reduced toxins in air that caused itchy throat and lungs - smells down 80%. STILL, after all this work, on certain days, (air pressure?) attic smell enters the house. Mainly the toxic smell is on second floor. Other days, can hardly notice the smell or the itchy sensation. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Rob
