Dean Baldwin Painting, founded in 1965, is an aircraft painting company with five facilities across the U.S. It has painted aircraft for some of the largest airlines in the world, including United, Delta and JetBlue. The cost to manufacture, operate, maintain and fly commercial aircraft is generally expensive, but not many think about the expense that goes into painting one.
The average cost falls between $175,000 and $200,000, according to the company. The entire painting process can take up 10 days and involves multiple engineers, painters and inspectors, all of whom are responsible for meeting the standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The market itself is a growing one: The global commercial aviation aircraft paint market was estimated at nearly $18.5 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow to a $65 billion by 2027.

Having started @ Cape Canaveral/Kennedy, painting launch pads, pipelines, water towers and later doing bridges, water treatment plants, shipyard work, later still houses up to the multi millions, I can attest that my #1 responsibility was protection of the surface and uniform film thickness. So many variables are in play, chemicals, preparation, correct materials, weather, humidity, temperature etc. The average person has No Clue what a good paint job correctly done is worth. Most of the time all they want to know is " Are you done yet"?

The article has several "holes" in it. 1. How can an industry that is supposed to be worth $18 Billion, have such few players, and one of them making sales of only $35 million or so? 2. The Owner that they interviewed, was obviously providing false information, as her company is private. She stated that sales were $35 million, an that they have five huge facilities, and between 300 and 400 employees. From that we can see that would imply that sales are around $100,000 per employee. That is simply unsustainable, even if she only paid her employees $5,000 per year, considering all the farcicalities they maintain, equipment, regulations they have to comply with, etc. This leads us to: 3. It costing $175,000 - $200,000 to paint an airliner. I might almost believe that is just the cost of paint alone, but even then, all the layers, the specialized types of paint they have to use, etc., I believe that this again was false information.

The owners ultimately just want to make a lot of profit so that they can thoroughly enjoy their senses. Women, wine, food (meat, caviar, rich food etc.), cars, private jets, yachts, mansions. They don't think what happens after this life. That woman thinks she is happy because she has enjoyed her senses with some men, indulged in wine and food, makeup, luxuries and what not, but has no idea where she will go after her death. In fact she doesn't think about her death seriously. Death is not fun. Think about your afterlife.

I said, "How the hell will we get this done and blah blah." He said with THIS: It was a large wand/nozzle for a painter used to paint box cars. It threw about a 5-8 foot wide spray! My only job, all day long, was to keep filling it with gallons of paint while he sprayed it on! ❤

175-200K for paint on a $420 MM dollar plane is a drop in the hat. If an airline has 6 flight attendants on a plane their pay + benefits would easily be more. Shocking how labor intensive this is for how little they charge (at least based on this video).

Probably misinterpreted something somebody told her (or she read somewhere) about the rudder having to be painted separately from the rest of the plane because the rudder *itself* has to be perfectly balanced. This is just a small example of how the news media gets something wrong due to a lack of UNDERSTANDING the subject they are reporting on. Understanding can only come with sufficient specialized education in complex subjects like aeronautics, and when people attempt to use common sense to compensate for a lack of that specialized education the result is a flawed understanding based on simplistic knowledge that is easily understood but wrong. Being easily understandable means that the flawed understanding is easily understood by the common people and anything that is easily understood tends to be easily accepted as the truth. That is how the unsuspecting public becomes educated by "plausible nonsense." The phenomenon is stated by the adage: Little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Mark Twain helped explain why it is dangerous: A lie travels halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.

Correction to the International aerospace coatings mention. The narrator mentions that they have seven locations in the US as well as 2 in Ireland and 1 in the Czech republic. This makes it sound like a US company with foreign bases which it is a bit misleading. This company is Irish, therefore they are headquartered at Shannon airport with a base at Dublin airport along with a base in the Czech republic and seven more in the US.

The reason why more money = more workers works every time is because it attracts people who have no inclination to work but do know that money to acquire the things they desire can be obtained in exchange for work and predictably they have not researched the nature of the job or have bought into the fallacy that "Fake it until you make it" actually works. Either they quit as soon as they realize the true nature of the work is not per their expectations or are fired when they don't perform to the employer's expectations. You seem to have missed the context in the video that made it clear that SUITABLE workers are difficult to find-ones that can accept and retain the expensive training and then perform as expected.

Whereas in the past the paint had to survive long term exposure to the higher level of UV radiation during daytime flight without degradation, now the paint has to also block UV from reaching the epoxy resins that give the structure its strength under compression and hold carbon or glass fibers in place to give the structure its tensile strength. Also, just because we don't see many results showing up as new coatings doesn't mean that research isn't going on. The performance requirements are so severe that few materials can meet all of them better than the current materials, which is why stickers slapped on tend not to work-the material and the adhesive to hold it on are just as easily (if not more) destroyed by UV light as the epoxy surface they need to protect. Additionally, research failures are not advertised as that tends to discourage investors who pay for the research in the hope that it will yield a profitable solution some day. Explaining failures or early announcements of partial success may give competitors enough insight into the technology to come up with a way of overcoming that last stumbling block which enables them to market a successful product without spending so much money on the research. I'm not sure what you mean by stealth paint, but neither the camouflage scheme used to avoid visual detection nor the absorption of radio frequencies to avoid radar detection have any applicability to the civil use of airplanes.

@@petep.2092 I meant that the rare news on aerospace plane paint (,when not peeling on airbus planes in heat) is paint in military that absorbs and/or reflects the radar or cuts infrared heat but as noted has zero commercial demand. Hotter temps in hot zones will require better heat resistant paint. Lighter paint cuts plane weight. Perhaps noise absorbing paint could cut engine reflective noise

Wouldn't a Black colored airplane be beneficial for planes that are routinely exposed to cold weather (e.g., Antarctica, Canada, Alaska, etc.)? I would think it could help maintain cabin comfort? Also, I've heard that some planes now have ceramic coating, which is commonly seen in the automobiles.

Not sure if composite carbon fibre surfaces require paint.
@petep.2092
@petep.2092 4 ай бұрын
They do, much more so than metal. The epoxy that gives the structure its compressive strength also holds the carbon or glass fibers in place to provide the proper tensile strength and flexibility. While that epoxy doesn't "corrode" by reacting with air or chemicals commonly found in the manufacture or operation of civilian airplanes, it is very sensitive to UV radiation which breaks it down, typically into a brittle substance that easily flakes off to expose deeper layers of the epoxy to UV, which reduces structural strength as explained above. The paint on composite structures thus has a different set of functions to perform. In addition to providing a smooth surface to reduce drag, it must adhere to the particular plastic epoxy that was used in the manufacture of that composite structure and remain so under the large variances in environmental parameters and the combinations thereof that an airplane may encounter on a single flight. Plastics in general are notoriously difficult to adhere to and very sensitive to improper surface preparation at paint application time. In addition it must not only withstand UV radiation to maintain its integrity and adhesion, it must also block the UV from reaching the composite structure it covers. Whereas corrosion on metal exposed to air when the paint peels off takes some time to develop, the damage to epoxy plastic begins immediately on exposure to sunlight and is less detectable, especially if the superficial paint coating remains intact.

@petep.2092
@petep.2092 4 ай бұрын
Air Force One is only the call sign used by an airplane operated by the U.S. Air Force when the POTUS is on board. It is usually a VC-25 (modified Boeing 747), but may also be any other model used to transport the POTUS when the VC-25 is not suitable. AFAIK all the VC-25s and the derivatives of other large jet airplanes have fully painted fuselages. Note that there are also call signs of Marine One, Navy One and Executive One that have been used when other operators transport the POTUS, so you'll have to clarify which one you may be referring to as having "chrome" in its paint scheme.

Question: Do planes use the same type of paint as cars and boats?
@theasian5496
@theasian5496 Жыл бұрын
the short answer to that would be no. the detailed answer would be aircraft bodies are typically made out of aluminum or carbon fiber. The chemicals in the paint are also different compared to the paint on the steel body of your car. Most cars have either one or two coats of paint; commercial airliners typically have up to five. Using automotive paint on airliners would probably result in the paint prematurely wearing or not adhering to the surface. The same could be said for using aircraft paint on cars.

30 years is too long for any airplane to still be in service. Because of their many parts, corrosion and metal fatige, airplanes are falling out of the skies, wiring failures, engines quit or even fall off, NO. 30 years is really pushing an airlines over the edge, which is many an explanation for so many plane crashes. Something should be done about it.. 20 years is a better age length of service to consider, but airlines are reluctant because new planes would cut into their financial status.
@thegrandaviator8308
@thegrandaviator8308 Жыл бұрын
If you understand anything about aviation, airlines simply replace parts. Many lane crashed aren’t bc of age. Almost 50% of all incidents are caused by pilot error. If you still believe this, then why do ww2 era planes from 80 years ago still fly. Why does hundred year old designs such as the piper cub still fly. Plus, large airlines don’t buy planes all the time bc there is no need to. American has a fleet of 961 planes out of which around 200 of them are on the ground at any given moment. There is simply no need to buy new planes for airlines unless u r a budgets airline such as Ryanair
@petep.2092
@petep.2092 4 ай бұрын
This video completely ignores the effort and cost of engineering the masks used when painting the various layers. If the livery is not properly translated from the airline's concept into the scaling and dimensions that match the particular model and submodel of airplane in the fleet and that assure alignment between layers of paint the result would be garbage. Even the effect of perspective compression due to the curvature of the fuselage has to be compensated for, given that the livery is intended to impress a viewer that is at the same level as the airplane or a few feet above, i.e. viewing it from the airport terminal or when taking off or landing. When viewed from directly above, such compensation may make the livery (especially large text that extends up into the crown area) look comical or aberrant.
