How Amazon Is Trying To Stop Package Theft

Package theft is at an all-time high, with 1.7 million packages stolen or lost every day in the U.S. As Amazon drives more shopping online, Prime members say they receive on average 51 packages a year, and one in three Americans report having at least one package stolen, resulting in $25 million of lost goods and services every day. In response, Amazon has installed secure locker locations in 900 U.S. cities and now offers Amazon Key, which allows customers to give remote access to delivery drivers so they can leave packages inside the home, garage or car trunk. UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service also offer a growing number of storefronts where packages can be picked up. Other solutions include video doorbells by companies like Google, start-ups experimenting with advanced package tracking, and lockboxes for individual homes.

True. I worked at Amazon and apparently it doesn't matter. The packages inside are very safe and secured. But i still wouldn't do this. Btw, stop ordering cat litter and toilet paper! Sometimes cat liter stacks on top and it breaks every other package! About 20% of the packages are cat litter in the DC area. its small, dense, and heavier than a bowling ball.

@@Mitaka-Asa For some reason it's cheaper to order toilet paper online than going to get it in store. They also set up recurring deliveries by the month on Amazon.

@@Mitaka-Asa That's just flat out wrong. I order amazon all the time and the majority of the packages have at most a little packing paper on the top but nothing on the sides or bottoms (and yes, most of my orders are fulfilled by amazon not third party, I always try to get prime orders). I've had broken and squished packages. Some packages have no packing material at all. In fact a recent package the item didn't even fit in the box, never mind any packing material, the shipping box was squished outwards just to fit the package inside it. Then a package I just got yesterday wasn't even in a shipping box, it was just the boxed item itself.

@kedolan4992
@kedolan4992 2 жыл бұрын
@@magnusE7 We don't do it like that because the volume of deliveries is simply too damn high for that, combined with the fact that everyone (not anymore due to covid, but you know, "normally") is at work during delivery time. Imagine a guy going out to deliver 200 packages, and from 9am-5pm he can only deliver maybe 5% of the packages he tries because everyone is at work? You'd never get anything delivered. Also note: there are over 100 people going out with that many packages PER WAREHOUSE, (aside from rural areas, most delivery drivers only have to go maybe 10-15 miles max from the warehouse) and now you can see how much stuff we order online, and why we can't do it that way anymore. Also, about the "at home vs post office", keep in mind the postal service does only a small amount of Amazon deliveries, most of them are actually delivered by Amazon themselves, so they couldn't be held at the post office anyway.
@BayuAH
@BayuAH 2 жыл бұрын
@@kedolan4992 Well, even before such volume seem high like nowadays, the US package deliverers seem like to leave their delivered packages front door unattended, even in ten years ago. This confuses me. In my country, delivery person never do that without make them in trouble. They always try to contact the recipient to arrange how to they receive their packages. 250 packages a day is just normal.

@@FloatingFatMan - As we speak, UPS is dropping off a package. He walked onto my porch, put the package down, and knocked on the door. Nobody walks onto our porch except family and the UPS guy. From my perspective actually seeing the situation, yes, I think the UPS guy here and before are behaving in a very smart and considerate way. I can't tell if you're serious or just baiting me -- but for sure you are not looking at this situation directly, so if you're serious, then I think you're misjudging something. Most obviously from my perspective is that even in my fairly dense neighborhood, there isn't a person in earshot to hear "UPS PACKAGE!" that wouldn't have heard and seen the giant brown van roll up. So yes, very smart. Thanks for asking. P.S. Actually, the US Mail guy let himself onto our porch to take refuge from some aggressive dogs that were loose in the neighborhood. Many of the Amazon drivers who deliver to my house do ring the doorbell upon delivery. One time, a large package was being dropped off. The driver actually rang the doorbell and waited for someone to come out to take possession of the package before leaving. However, that was an actual Amazon van driver, not Amazon Flex. So far, I've had great experiences with Amazon delivery drivers. By the way, if Amazon is delivering a package, there is an option to give specific instructions to the driver. You can specify to have them ring the doorbell. The only complaint I've had is some of the less experienced drivers will leave the package at my front door instead of the side carport door. I have since left a sign they would see to tell them to leave it where I want. Yes, that could tell thieves where to go. However, by the time they get there, they've been recorded on three different cameras. Also, I'm normally home to take packages. My situation is very rare though. I consider myself fortunate to be able to be home to take packages as they arrive.

Great video! It seems that ever since 2020, the whole package theft thing has really gotten worse. Back when, most of the carriers delivered right up to the door, now, most of them put the stuff in an easily accessible lobby, where there are just piles of packages free for the taking. At least, at the complex I live in. For those of us who don’t drive, dropping it off somewhere else will be a significant Lemoore expense than taking the chance.

Why should a delivery driver have to waste his time unloading a possibly heavy package and walk it up your driveway or garden to your front door, just to see you’re not in? And then have to walk said heavy package back to his truck, and then drive elsewhere and AGAIN unload said heavy package? Everyone nowadays gets a text message when your parcel is an hour away. People should make sure they are home. And if you’re at work and can’t leave then you should just buy your stuff from the store in your own time. I make sure I’m always in for a delivery, I will leave work early if necessary, and if I know I won’t make a delivery I just go to a store and buy the item.

Live in the UK, we get an estimated delivery time, if we're not in when they arrive then they will go to our neighbours and hand it to them to keep a hold of, the neighbours will sign a sheet stating they've taken it, and we will get a little card through our door saying who has it, if no neighbours are in to take it then it will be brought to the post office for us to pick up, how is this so hard to do in America? what insane person thought "ahh, just leave it at the front door for any random mug to steal"?

In Portugal, if no one is home, packages are redirected to the nearest post office and a note is delivered instead, stating where it is and when we can go grab it. This was making theft of those goods extremely reduced!

Princess Peach not that simple, the majority of Americans are not home everyday. Assuming everyone works 9-5, In my neighborhood at least usps delivers at 12, fedex at 2, and ups around 4. If you decided to go home and wait anyways, there’s no guarantee that the postman will show up in time. Postmen usually do their job quickly and efficiently because of the mass of houses. In the us, neighborhoods are close knit houses, there are hundreds of houses in my neighborhood, spanning about 3 miles. Postmen just don’t have the time to wait around and be ringing doorbells if they have a long route. If they did anyways, like I said before, most Americans aren’t home. So that means they’ll have to take the majority of packages they deliver back to the post office = overcrowding. Even then, my post office closes at 5pm so that makes it an inconvenience to have to go pick it up early in the morning.

In Finland you're not allowed, by law, to just leave the package outside. It has to be put inside the house through a mail opening on one's front door or it has to be given personally. I had a feeling and luckily opened a case After The Package was late on the First day.. It took 3 Days to Find it..Multiple Truck switches, Entries were falsified and we caught them in Real-time.. They were making it appear lost, And tried to deliver it Late, Late at Night with the off duty worker/ accomplice meeting the truck next door to the drop off point to stand in with a fake signature... To make it look like it was lost and finally delivered. Thankfully it was tracked and We were waiting and watching it happen...They were stealing laptops and tech stuff for a long time, Thankfully I trusted my Gut and spoke up early, always speak to a supervisor and open that case when you can or your s.o.l...

Yes, a large number of these thefts could be avoided here in the US if the delivery person would just ring the door bell. I have a sign at my front door telling them to do that as I am home most of the time. Still they would not. So I made a huge sign that I would place outside of my door anytime I was expecting a package. Still some of them would not, and some would ring the door bell like a zillion times I suppose to "demonstrate" that they did not like my sign much. What is the big deal about spending an extra 1/2 second to push a little button?? Well, over the past year, I have noticed that they have gotten much better at ringing the doorbell thankfully. Perhaps it's because more people have been home or perhaps Amazon has finally instructed their employees to do so as the amount of thefts have gotten so bad.

I didn't realise some courier services overseas automatically leave it at your door to get stolen by anyone on the street.
