CNBC Marathon explores the sneaky economics of odometer fraud, credit card fraud and phone scams.
Odometer fraud is a stealthy and a lesser known form of fraud that is hard to detect, but can cost a car buyer thousands. Fraudsters will roll back odometers on cars to hide the vehicle’s mileage in the hope of extracting a better price. And as used car prices rose during the pandemic, odometer fraud could’ve become a more attractive way to make some extra bucks.
America is the most credit card fraud-prone country in the world. The economic cost of credit card fraud goes far beyond the cost of illegally purchased merchandise; businesses often spend millions to protect themselves from fraud, buying software and hiring security experts to monitor transactions. Experts say there aren’t enough regulations to help protect the U.S. economy, especially small businesses from card fraud.
And despite the rise of sophisticated crypto frauds and ransomware plots, phone scams continue to trick Americans out of tens of billions of dollars each year. It’s not only older people who fall for such phone scams. Young people and men get tricked the most.
Watch CNBC’s marathon to learn more about these three common types of fraud and how to protect yourself and your business.

If you find an honest contractor, mechanic, etc., PAY them, refer others to them, write them reviews, and promote them any way you can. Rewarding the good guys and helping their businesses succeed is one way out of this mess. Our connection through the internet makes it more possible than ever to spread the word about the good guys (and the bad!).

Problem is, how do you know the review sites are legit? Google makes it's billions on pushing you toward certain businesses....and those businesses aren't mom and pop shops because they don't have a ton of extra cash to throw at Google.

Christmas Day 2022 a scammer drained our bank account with our card information. Luckily we are poor and only had $200 but that was our last $200. I eventually got the money back from the bank but had to wait until after the new year. These people are evil. We have four kids and don’t get food stamps or any government assistance. That $200 was to feed our 4 kids.

I don't have to worry about scammers. I simply have no money. Even then, I've been scammed, actually hacked. My PayPal account got hacked and I lost everything I had built up. A total of about $16. They went through a whole lot to steal $16. They even tried to get money from my regular bank account (attached). My $4 was safe as my bank did not allow it. LOL

Scammers and identity theft can do worse than take what you have though. They can put you in debt. If they are successful at opening loans or lines of credit then, sure, you might be able to get those cancelled, but you'll have to find out about it first -- have it ruin your credit score -- and then take the time to fix that as well. It's a massive waste of time for both individuals and companies and it's shocking that it's been happening for years and it's still so easy.

3D-secure consists in a one-time code sent to your phone that you must enter in the check-out screen to complete the purchase. Basically the bank is asking: is truly you doing this purchase? I don't see why people should abandon the shopping cart for a security check that takes less than one minute, and prevent anyone abusing my credit card.

I've got one for you. A company called International Sea and Air Shipping gave me an estimate of $5,537 to move some household goods from the US to Spain (high but not unreasonable). After they had taken position of the goods they billed me $7,345.50. Then their European subcontractor, Schmidt Global, came up with fees of over 1,700 euros (a fee to move goods upstairs, a fee to get the right sized truck, a fee to attempt a second deliver again after they botched the first attempt). The amounts were never disclosed in the contract nor the conditions when the fees would be applied. Again, they held the goods hostage until they got the money. I contacted they federal government but they can not regulate international movers -- only state to state. The whole ordeal was a nightmare.

When the seat is shredded, steering wheel worn down to metal, no ink left on the radio it probably doesn't have 40,000 miles. I had a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and would take the ABS sensor out in the winter because it was dangerous, well it also controled the mileage. I scrapped it when it blew up but easily could have sold and nobody would have known.

In the UK mileage is recorded at the annual MOT test. The major exception to this are police vehicles which are never tested. Not even on sale. They get sold at auction and the auction houses offer to MOT the cars but the police refuse this as they get higher prices with no recorded mileage. So the police collude with the scammers.

Somehow here in Europe in many countries for example the nordics we havent had the kind of Credit card frauds like you have had for ages. Both your cards, card readers and online banking is years behind in security, the flaws are easily fixable, just call any bank here and ask how did you do it. For instance get rid of the magnetic strip on cards, secondly add a 2-part authentification to your online credit card payments etc. And what goes to the odometers, at least in my country it gets tracked every year in inspections, and electronically stored by the government, cant change those numbers.
@hbarudi

There should always be a second odometer hidden deep in the engine bay that reports the actual mileage and can support digits to the millions place. This second odometer would normally be ignored by your typical roll back guy trying to scam someone on a car. Then once the car is investigated, that odometer reading will be discovered and tell the truth. Do car manufacturers do this?
@tawacnt7122
@tawacnt7122 5 ай бұрын
Usually the odometer reading is stored in multiple computer modules in the vehicle that can be accessed through the OBDII port. Some of the methods of modifying the odometer overwrites this data and some of the methods only modify the data in the instrument cluster leaving the unmodified data in other computers in the car such as the PCM.

Here's a far out idea, how about we judge the value of a vehicle based on something other than just the mileage?
@JohnS-er7jh
@JohnS-er7jh 5 ай бұрын
like what? Mileage is often the number one factor in the value of a vehicle, as it should be. A vehicle that is well maintained and has lower mileage for its age, is going to have a much higher resale value then a newer vehicle with much higher mileage (given the same make/model).

Aren’t odometers most digital now? So how is it still possible?
@Ultimusvivi
@Ultimusvivi 4 ай бұрын
If it's digital it's nothing more than a computer which can be reset you can also just get an instrument panel off of an identical car from an auto salvage that has lower miles.

Once you have been scammed you live life suspecting everyone is a scammer. It's not a nice way to live. From porch pirates to credit card fraud much more needs to be done and bad people need to be punished. One day I'm going to get old and won't be as sharp as I am now. I wonder how many future AI generated scams will I fall for.
