Thank you so much Paul for the videos. I am not really a DYI or contractor. 1 of my best friends hired a contractor to do a job. They did a great job but left and not come back or call. Due to family issues. Uncertain when they can get back. My friend asked me if I can do it. I was honest told I never did before. He said watch youtube and get it done for me please. Got lucky and found your videos. A section you can do in 3 minutes took me about 3 hours when I first started, I am getting better and hope to be done this weekend. I patched a hole and did first skim coat over the popcorn ceiling. Tomorrow going to try and get the second coat done. Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos.

Thanks for the skimming tutorials. You make it look easy! I've just changed the partitioning in my home. My normal finishing is in three stages: Tape, Block, Skim. I have never thinned drywall compound before. With your advice, I'll try it. I hate sanding. I'm doing this DYI, but I have done handyman projects for others, and built subdivisions.

I’m a contractor and I use the same mix. I use a large mixing cage on a hole hawg drill for mixing.

Enjoy your videos fall I am a contractor semi retired now but do take on small projects currently I’m helping a friend who has a rental unit that was abused and I’m going to need to repaint the covers on the radiant heating units is there a heat resistant paint that you would recommend I will be spraying these units. Hey Paul, I have really wavy plaster walls with layers of paint and topping compound with deep texture. I used easy sand for my first coat, and now I’m moving to all purpose for easy sanding. Was that okay?

Question! I’m about to skim coat my ceiling post-popcorn removal. I have a disability so I can only do small sections at a time (resting in between). Do you have any suggestions/advice for me? I’m unsure about mixing small batches of joint compound and looking for ways to make it easy to stop and rest without ruining a batch or a piece of the wall.

Amateur here - your thoughts on USG Midweight (purple). Have had to repair and fill some areas. After using USG 45 for initial filling, I've been using the Midweight for second and final coat and any touchup. Seems to fair amount of glue, not too difficult to sand but harder finish than Plus 3? I've never used Plus 3. Thanks, appreciate your videos.

Ok so I screwed up I got to excited and skip troweled my ceiling and only after it dried my joints cracked. I just realized laying in bed at three in the morning that I forgot to tape them. After I put my joint compound on the joints. What now? So I figured that I would sand them down tape them skim coat then re skip trowel the ceiling. Your thoughts please? A lot of work but I don’t know what else to do.

Hey Paul... contractor like yourself in fort Lauderdale. Off topic question for you. I just removed a popcorn ceiling and after I put PVA on it all the drywall except the tape lines turned yellow. Then primed again with good primer, no luck. Then finally used oil primer and it's fine. Next time I think I'll use shellac. It wasn't water damage nor smoke damage. I've never seen this happen and wondering if you have...I'm stumped as to why that happened. My only thought is that humidity got trapped in the drywall from the attic and had some sort of reaction with the popcorn and primer. What do you think?

This same thing happened on our ceiling in our 1910 house. We were able to block it with kilz, tried cheaper paint, but that turned yellow and had to use Behr Marquee (which seemed ridiculous for a ceiling)... I'd also be interested to know what it was all about! The room we did had never had popcorn texture, but it is plaster at the core

@@Elemiriel wow......the ceiling I did was also plaster.....I thought it had to do with the popcorn but the plaster must be the cause.....some kind of chemical reaction going on..... interesting

Do you ever mix Dawn dishwashing detergent in your mud?

Do you? I have a seen pinholes in mud before after it dried. Is that caused by too much water or Dawn or recoating too soon? Little of both? Do you ever let your mud slake for a few minutes before applying it? I assume slaking is to let mud settle and maybe let air bubbles out of any air pockets it might have?

I have a make a fast decision on who to hire. The guy with the most experience is by far the cheapest. The job is correct an amateur job which was spray primed over and left many different textures. He proposes that he will use 90 min hot mud to fix defects, and then skim coat with his choice which is light blue USG Topping. Most people have said they would skim coat with thinned USG Plus 3. This guy says he doesn't like Plus3 for skim coating as it tends to leave pock marks. What would YOU recommend? The experienced guy (he is 67 and been doing drywall for 40 years) wants $500 and the others want $2000.
