DIY. Completed all paneled walls in a manufactured home....the hardest thing was to make the wall have even amounts. The walls do look like drywall now but lots of sanding and reapplying to even out the build up. This process looks easier to do the ceiling...glad I found this. YES, I would rather have drywall but at 66yrs old the compound was able to be purchased, transported in my small car, carried by only me, and completed at my own pace.

This retired-female-whose-dad-did-everything-except-teach-his-daughters-how-to-everything thanks you many times over. Your video makes it look do-able and like I could really finish this. I've spent days removing the texture that was painted before I owned the house 25 years ago. Now, I am happy to learn I don't have to finish de-texturizing the bathroom! I can see a few sloppy days ahead of me as I haven't done this before. Yeah, kind of naive, but I'm determined. Thank you.

Nice work. I've used the roller for texturing before but never for skim coating. Skimming texture i typically use a drywall sander to knock it down and pull a tight skim with a 10" to fill voids, no thinning. Final coat with a 12" and mist wall as I skim.

Great how to video. One thing I'd recommend for a beginner watching. Green lid mud is great for taping and applying some corners. But for skimming I think beginners should use purple, red or blue lid mud. These are formulated as mid and light weight compounds. They shrink less and sand even easier than green mud. Green mud shrinks more then other compounds and it's harder to sand

Green lid red lid blue lid?? 😂😂😂😂 what he’s using is all purpose and all all purpose shrinks some less than others like us plus 3 is a lightweight all purpose and shrinks less but has less glue so it won’t stink to painted wall as well then you can have topping compounds the shrink even less and have very little glue so they stink even less personally I sand walls with a sand pole with a moderately coarse sand paper first then I skim it with straight all purpose I sticks better has less bubbles and then I sand with 100 - 120 grit and skim again with topping compound ending with a nice smooth wall

Thanks for this. I am rehabbing an upstairs of a 100+ year old building. I have always done work like this for others as a subcontractor of sorts, usually very good results, but for slave drivers. This job it is all me, and I am out of practice. I had a few ideas of my own to try, and this video showed them to be valid. The only thing I did not get (and now probably will) is the roller grid for the bucket, I was just using a paint roller tray. You mentioned taking out the lines later with a six inch knife, which will work, but I saw and bought a knockdown knife that I tried out and it is super. Not only does it flex to keep you from putting on too much pressure, but there is also a hole in the handle for an extention pole. This is great, because the building I am doing has 10 foot ceilings.

Paul, My wife and I just moved into a new home last August. We have a full, un-finished basement that we want to finish. We'll do it a little at a time as finances permit. We're both retired so time is no issue. I've pretty much finished up the framing, so drywall is next. The garage, however, is drywalled, and taped, but no texture, so I'm going to practice the texture in the garage first. I worked construction most of my life, from housing to power plants and refineries, mostly plumbing and pipefitting. I've seen a lot of joint and texture work, but actually done very little myself. I want to do a decent job on my home so I looked up your video. I find it excellent instruction, and it answered some of the questions I had. I'm confident that I can do a decent job, thanks to your easy to follow instruction. Thank you.

Former remodelling gc. I tried to tell a couple different drywall finishers to use the ol fat knap roller technique on jobs we did that had to have alot of walls floated. But they seemed like they looked at it as a rookie way if doing things and insisted on troweling everything on. ....even when I walked thru and marked up half the work they'd done needing to be gone over again. They'd rather do it twice and get paid once than take a little hit to the machismo. And I made sure they bought the mud for it too so i know they didn't make much it any money on the job. ...but they did it all without a damn roller so I guess that's what really matters. Smdh

Do you prep the wall by sanding before doing the skim? Or do you just start right away? A house we may be purchasing has a bit of textured walls and I'd want to redo most of them and get them smooth. Also around how much does that compound cost, and how much does a bucket do?

Paul always love your videos and Thanks much for doing this for all us DIYer's out here I and everyone else greatly appreciate what you do! - I have an entry way that was plastered back in the 40's with a texture I just hated so I applied 90 min mud to smooth out the wall initially and to cover my repairs to some joints and a hole that was caused by ripping out an old shelf that was attached into the wall. This was my first time ever trying this and allowed me to practice with a taping knife in applying mud. Still learning knife technique but it's come out great to this point. So now I want to roll on the first smoothing coat with the USG GP mud as you used but one of the wall has an Octagonal window and I am wondering what is the best technique for working around this window so I don't get all sorts of lines and messiness going on around the window frame and it all ends up looking uniform? Would you work around the window first and then work out from there? Thanks again Paul and appreciate any suggestions on working around an octagonal window!

I would like to do this on some walls in my house that have already been finished and painted for a long time as it's an old house. The walls have a lot of patch marks and holes, etc. in them. Do I need to sand the wall before doing this?

I'm a painting contractor. I'll do some basic prep with Joint compound. I've patched many holes in walls; for this I use 20 minute mud. The key is knowing how to mix the powder with water, as it has a tendency to set up quickly. The results are excellent; the finished product doesn't shrink, and is hard as a rock. Like anything new, It a little takes time to be proficient. Thanks for your post; I'm going to follow your process!!

Nothing is more beautiful than a hand filled and hand sanded wall to a perfect smooth finish. Followed by a beautiful flat pastel color paint. With fancy moldings painted gloss white and smoothed out with caulking. The end result is fantastic. Hard work though.

I'n a DIY'er and watch all your vid's. I am removing all the popcorn sprayed concrete ceiling in a condo I rent out. I used this technique in the closet first and it worked great. I scraped off texture, cleaned concrete with ammonia as recommended by primer, primed with bin shellac based primer and rolled on all purpose. But I used the Marshalltown 22in knockdown knife I got at L***S. It has a rubber blade and with a slight learning curve I think it works great with the wide blade. 2 coats with light sand in between them and very smooth flat results. Thanks for all the great info on the vid's, its provided the confidence to attempt a rather intimidating job for me.

You disrespect your own mother by talking to others like this. How disappointed she would be to see your post.

DIYer. 2 questions: When doing larger walls, does the whole wall need to be coated before skimming? Or can it be broken into sections? Also, I have a 40yr old home and I can look around and see all the joint seams due to age and sagging (which makes it handy because I know where the studs are!). Will skimming cover that up? Will it just return in a few years? Thanks!

Maintenance Technician, in a cabinet factory for years, so of course I'm an amateur electrician, welder, plumber, fire inspector, always doing the safety guy's job (who doesn't in a production plant, except for the safety guy!). Spent 23 years in the Navy so I'm a jack of all trades, I would always kind of laugh I've floated ceilings that looked like a snake before starting, walls that have never seen a square or plumbob, in Louisiana growing up in that swamp climate in Southern Louisiana, any piece of your house gets a leak, which is highly possible that climate will eat and you if not careful! So I've never done this before, I'm not a painter by trade, I'm probably better than 60%, of the population, but a professional knows what he doesn't know and more importantly what he needs to learn and from whom! You're only as good as the people in the room are, listen to idiots and you'll most certainly become one! Luckily sometimes moronic state is transient and smart people can recover some others are born to be stupid! ***only one observation from one professional to another....invest in a light stand! Thanks and makes perfect sense. I thought I was doomed to those ugly knockdown walls and ceilings, I hate them son of a bitches! My eyes over 50, years of working mostly nights and using Night Vision Devices (NODS/MVGS), although the GEN III are monocular, the last 8 years I was in and I used them in Afghanistan as well as other locations in Latin America. Those freaking binocular GEN I and II from the 80s and early to mid-90s after around 3 - 7 hours your eyes would be fucked up for hours. It manipulates light and angles so imagine how that must be bad for you, no depth perception with GEN I and IIs! Ok enough BS'ing for the night!
