A System Management Controller (SMC) Rest can fix many Macbook and iMac problems as well as Mac Mini and Mac Pro.
This video will show you exactly how to reset the SMC step by step as well as other hints and notes about the reset process.
On Macbooks (Pros and Airs) plug in the MagSafe charger and wait until you see that the battery is charging (red or yellow light). Press and hold down CONTROL + OPTION + LEFT SHIFT + POWER BUTTON for 5 seconds, when you let go, observe the MagSafe light indicator color, it should turn green then a few seconds later back to orange or red. This will let you know that the SMC has been reset.
On iMacs, Mac Pros, Mac Minis, disconnect the power cord then press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Plug the system back in and start normally, the SMC is now reset.
The SMC is in change of a lot of information and is one of the most essential controller chips on the logic board.

i literally had all of these issues so i was about to buy a whole new computer. my charger wasn't even lighting up when i plugged it into my computer. my battery icon was missing and my settings kept saying that i have 0% charge. i ran a system diagnostics test and it told me that the battery was missing. my computer kept shutting down randomly and every time i turned it on, the fan would run so loudly. i did this and it's working perfectly, thank you!!

I followed the direction and it worked! My fan doesn't make any more noise. My battery charger light did just what this demos light did, green to yellow. The battery was not showing any light. And in my top bar on my computer I got my battery and sound icons back. Thank you so much!

Thanks a Lot. My 2011 Macbook Pro star shutting down at star up full loud fan on all the time. I did change my battery recently and I didn't know I have to do this reset after that. You put those warning in your video I follow the instrctions and....Wah Lah!

Depends on your model. I would start with replacing the battery because that status shows up when a cell dies and when a cell is dead it can swell up and bend the entire macbook. If you don't have a SSD that will be the first upgrade that will make your computer up to 5 times faster.

Good video. Very clear to do the SMC reset but its not working on my mac. I have near 4 hours try to do without success. After i do the the combination then immediately turn on. I don't know why may be could be because have SSD but i don't think that could be a problem for that procedure. My actually problem right now is the battery indicator not working and the backlight for keyboard not working. The battery indicator a buy a new one but not turn on. Please help me.

Please, I need some serious help. My 2013 Macbook Pro keeps blinking in and out of sleep. I've done the SMC reset, downloaded Amphetamine, enabled caffeine, completed virus scans, and it just seems to get worse. I use my laptop for DJing. I also compress movies using the Handbrake app. Would really appreciate some tips on how to alleviate this problem. Application or hardware I can replace.

No. You need to replace the battery, that will solve the issue. Some cell on it is dead, that’s why.

Usually if the mac only works on a charger, this indicates that the battery either is plugged in incorrectly or needs to be replaced.

When I put my battery in, the light on the charger goes Amber and doesn't flash green. But when I take the battery out, the charger turns green. If I power up the Mac with just the battery, it automatically goes into sleep mode. Should I get another battery? The display is fine without the battery being plugged in. Only with the battery does it go to sleep mode. I have checked the settings property and it is set correctly. What are ur thoughts

Does this work for fans getting loud after installing Mac OS Sierra? Nothing was wrong with our Macbook Pro late 2011 UNTIL we just installed this new OS and now no matter if we have 1 or more web pages open or an application open the fans come on super loud & the Macbook gets really HOT. thank you

You can install an aftermarket fan control application and check and see if the cpu temperature is very high +70 degrees c if now then it's just the System Management Controller over compensating but I would suggest replacing the thermal paste on the CPU heatsink or take it in for a checkup at a computer shop so that they can replace the paste for you, it might be dry.

I had the same issue. I've read from a forum: Turn on iCloud keychain. (Apple menu--preferences--icloud---check keychain), then I rebooted my macbook pro and my Kernel task went down significantly and the fan didn't activate very often.

Hello, someone did a reflow on my mac, it worked but died the next day. So I decided to do it myself (nothing to loose). Turns out it worked. But they did this OpenFrameWare trick in which they set up the fans to max always. How do I reset them to default to that I can control them with fancontrol app instead? I tried reseting the SMC, but It din't work. Thanks!

Just the app on our website will work. There is no trick, they are on because the sensor is broken or there is no thermal paste on the heat-sink or the wrong amount of paste. Download the fan controll on appledollars.com

It could be that the fan is being blocked from spinning. Try to open the Mac and investigate any blockage or loos wires.

Swap out the charger first to make sure it's not the charger it self. Then, open the Macbook and look for corrosion on the logic board. If you take out the logic board and clean it with 99% alcohol and it still doesn't light up, then Google "Macbook Pro one wire circuit", you can fix it with some soldering or just replace the board. Hope this helps, good luck.

i got an early 2011 mbp and changed the battery. When i do this the charger just stays green, it doesnt change colors or anything. and my status indicator keeps telling me my battery needs to be serviced.

Try plugging in a usb keyboard and trying. It could be one of your built in keys are not working. Also see if you can try a different charger.

Hello, excuse me, I have MBP 2011 with the power button as the one you show, but when I try to do the SMC at the very first touch of the power button it will turn on immediately even with the other 3 keys pressed, do you know why? Hello, I have a macbook pro 15" late 2013, I read that reseting the SMC for a removable battery macbook pro is done by unplugging the battery connector from the logic board and pressing the shut down button for 5 or 10 seconds! My question is if I replace the battery, should I do the reseting before installing the new battery or after installing and fully recalibrating it? Thanks!

Any harm in trying this on a 16 MBP just to see if it increases battery and decreases the temperature?

I bought the 2019 macbook pro yesterday and when battery drops to about 40% it shuts donwn unexpectedly. After the random shutdown it's impossible to turn the computer back on unless I plug it in. I thought it was a hardware related issue but when I swapped it for a new macbook I experienced the same problem. Any help would be really appreciated!

Did the test and my Macbook Pro (2010 model) went off. I had to start the Macbook again. Still loud fans...

It restarts it self, that's part of the procedure. Sound like your thermal paste might have dried up and so the cooling of the system is not as good so the fan has to compensate by turning up it's speed.

Thanks for the video. I’m struggling with my fan, I pressed the keys down for 5 and let go the light went from Amber to green but didn’t return to amber until I tried turning it on after a minute of waiting. It’s still acting up. Any tips?

Might be liquid damage inside, can you open the back and look inside?

Hello I installed a new battery into my 2010 15” MacBook Pro... hoping this works.. only problem is my cable mag safe light is already green when plugged in and battery is t charging. P,ease help.

It could be that the new battery is bad. Does it charge with the old battery?

What happens if you do a SMC with the power on. I have an early 2015 Retina display 13 inch macbook pro?

Does the MacBook have to be shutoff already when you do the four button trick?

Yes. It has to be completely shut down.
