i just started using one of the walk behind saws for the first time the other day. my boss showed me how to use it for a min then let me loose to cut 3 slabs. probably like 30 cuts. little nervous at first but i got the hang of it.

I have not nor have ever had anything to do with concrete, however, I enjoy tremendously watching your excellent work, work-ethic, explanations, and quality video editing. I only wish I was younger (71) to go back and take this trade up. Looks like fun, but then you make it look easy - I know it is lots of hard work and your experience makes it look so easy. After watching dozens of your videos, I'm definitely a (KZfaq) expert on concrete... Over and 'aht'.

Beautiful garage ( second one), with a car lift will be very functional! I bought a Milwaukee sprayer, they sell a second tank that connects to a concrete saw when no water is available. Thought that is pretty sweet!

Tom, If you always find a crack about two feet in from the doorways, would it not be advisable to increase the reinforcement across the affected area. Just suggesting a possible solution to an ongoing problem. Maybe, using heavier gauge rebar mesh in the problem areas. Regards Robin.

We’ve tried that but it still happens. The best way we have found to protect that area is to put the saw cut in and give it relief in that area

It has nothing to do with settling.it’s all about the stress between the center of the floor in the garage door openings.so we know it wants to crack there we just try and control it .

Good morning Tom. Does the concrete saw blade get you close enough to the walls, or do you need to use an angle grinder to finish the cut?
@GunpowderandFreedom
@GunpowderandFreedom 2 жыл бұрын
On garage floors, it’s fine. It will stop about 3” away from the wall but that’s not big deal. On our exterior work (our decorative concrete) we will use a grinder and run it the whole way to the wall. Thanks for watching!

The reason you typically get the Crack 2 feet in on a garage is that's the over dig line, unless u backfill with sand it's going to settle. I cut the same ways far as 2 feet in. Sitting here watching a city sidewalk that's been done for 2 hours, so that nobody walks in it, we have a guy who likes to ride his bike through fresh concrete, and our city makes the contractor tear them out and replace at our expense. Let's just say it's not a nice neighborhood and it's the busiest road in town.
@7.3powerstroke6

Thats bullshit, the city needs to start putting up cameras and make the people that ride through it pay for it. I feel personally that it's not your job to watch it.

*QUESTIONS* Mister, How deep do you cut into the concrete? Could please explain why it is not necessary to cut all the way through the thickness of the slab in order to get adequate stress relief ? Thank you for your consideration. Regards.
@skliros9235
@skliros9235 2 жыл бұрын
Usually 1/4 of the thickness of the concrete. If 4 inches thick, then cut 1.5" And you could cut deeper, but then the slabs don't interlock as well when it cracks, and you could get vertical movement between slabs.

@@skliros9235 Thank you for your reply, sir. *Questions* : do cracks tend to develop mostly toward the surface ? Do slabs still crack below the cut depth ? Thank you for your consideration. regards

@@lgl_137noname6 when concrete cracks, it's all the way through. The cut lines just give a place for the concrete to crack and not look bad versus a crooked crack.

With our soft cut saw‘s,, we cut 1 inch deep. I’d like to cut the same day or early next day in this colder weather sometimes we wait two days. It gives us a much cleaner cur. as the concrete dries it shrinks as the water evaporates and causes stress first off the middle as well as the corners

How deep are these cuts? I still don't understand why concrete cracks.
@GunpowderandFreedom
@GunpowderandFreedom 2 жыл бұрын
Concrete cracks for a number of reasons. In our area, it has a lot to do with the temperature changes. The extreme hot and cold temperature shifts makes the concrete shrink and expand. This will cause the concrete to crack. Thanks for watching!

Our garage floor, in NC, isn't cracked. I've noticed that here they don't but a foundation under the garage door openings. Dosen't seem right also don't care for the unconditioned crawl spaces, dirt floors, stepped footers and lack of good waterproofing of below grade walls, but those are other stories

you are defeating the purpose of the soff-cut saw it should be sawn on the same day that the pour was made that saw is designed to cut soft concrete so the cracks don't get a head start the shoe on the bottom prevents tear out and chipping hence the name soff-cut
