►SCRIPT
So the first thing I noticed is Avicii’s mixing technique. Like other EDM DJs, Avicii prefers to only affect his next track’s Low EQs when mixing them in.
So he brings his next song’s Low EQ all the way to the left side before blending the next track in.
This is done so he can have more sonic space to bring up the next tracks volume when mixing.
Now, he only brings the Low EQ of his next track back up to the 12 o’clock position, when he’s ready to blend and transition to the next track, which in most cases are when he reaches the outro sections of songs.
What’s different though with his EQ style compared to Martin Garrix is that he doesn’t prefer to affect the current song’s Low EQ when mixing out, instead, he simply brings the current song’s volume down
Now, to make his transitions sound extra smoother, he also tends to use an Echo effect on the current song when mixing out.
This technique helps smoothen one’s mixing, because instead of just shutting down the previous song’s volume and being done with it
Demo
You can let the song naturally fade out with an Echo effect
Now one of the ways DJs like Avicii keep the energy of the mix up, is that they have the next song’s Build up section begin right after the current song’s Chorus ends.
This helps retain the momentum of the mix and keeps the overall flow going.
Because if you don’t mix to something right after an EDM chorus, what you’re left with is a breakdown section, which could be boring for hyped up listeners
Now if you wanna how you can apply this trick in your DJing, stick around till the end of the video.
Anyway, speaking about hyping things up, let’s move on to Accenting
So accenting is done by a DJ for 3 reasons.
1. To make a track sound more exciting and cool
2. To give the mix a more live feel
3. And to do just something, besides dance, and mix the next track in
Now one of the ways Avicii accents his tracks, is by activating an Echo effect on them right before they reach their next section
It’s a pretty simple technique to do, and it just works by activating an Echo effect, and cranking its Level/Depth knob from left to right
Sometimes Avicii alters this, by implementing a High Pass Filter Sweep on top of his Echo sweep.
And now let’s talk about where Avicii tends to mix his next song in. So like I mentioned earlier, he likes to have his next song’s Build Up section begin right a songs chorus ends.
And this is done by counting your beats, and mixing your next song in, at the right section in the current song’s Chorus section.
So as you can see in this illustration. Our next song has a 32 beat intro before its Build Up section begins, so therefore we should mix this song, at the last 32 beats of the current song’s outro section
Most EDM DJs actually mix there, because it’s the easiest place to blend and EQ tracks. You can do your smoothest transitions with an Intro section and outro section.

Hey there DJ Carlo Atendido, Just wanted to clarify and clear the air regarding the myths that Avicii was a DJ. To inform you, Avicii was a Composer/Producer. He was not a real "DJ." He had to fake DJ'ing on stage because he was basically forced to by his manager, Arash, who was money hungry. Avicii was paid to put on a phenomenal show for the promoters and most importantly, his fans. Avicii used tracks of his own, as well as picking other tracks from other Artist's and composed all tracks into 1 full composition. Whether or not if he was in a club or festival, he would pre-record his sets for every show. Remember, Avicii wanted to entertain, not DJ.

Levels was the first time I was introduced to Avicii and it was through this that opened the whole EDM genre to me. he was my gateway in, but he always had his unique style with his music that other producers could never copy. The songs that I hold closest to my heart are SOS and Heaven. Brings a tear to my eye as I type this message cause the song Heaven has a very strong meaning to me and every time I hear it I relive a little bit of the magic that was Avicii. I know I'm not alone in saying we miss you.

I've always done the volume cracked down slightly on the outgoing track, and cut the bass slightly but not always all the way. I've found it sounds a lot better in a lot of instances. Instead of echo though, ill usually creep a reverb effect up on the outgoing track before I let it go. No technique is perfect for every situation, but having an idea of technique(s) to apply and build on in given situations is always great

Problem with using alphanumeric on Rekordbox is you then can’t adjust the ket manually. This is an issue since it doesn’t add a “0” to the beginning of the single digit numbers. So when sorting a playlist with the “sort by key” function it will sort top to bottom as “10-12” and after that “1-9”. If you manually sort before export to a flash drive that’s a non issue, but you see how that could be annoying.

He died before I started DJing myself but even when he was around, I liked to listen to his music. Looking back, he really did change the EDM music scene during the 2010s and inspired many, myself included. Definitely one of those people who died too soon and deserved to live a good life and it's also good that he gave some of his earnings that he didn't need to charities and the communities. My favourite Avicii song is wake me up. I have quite a personal connection to that song

One thing that you should have mentioned is that sometimes Avicii did long trasitions from an outro into an intro, and it being that long is sometimes pleasing to the ear and can make the crowd go wild. Still though, very informative and well made video as usual!

@@djcarlo I've been following you since your tour vlogs. I'm starting to dive into DJ'ing aside from producing music. In fact, I had an EDM phase where I play songs via Virtual DJ using only keyboard and mouse HAHAHA when I was 12. Thanks for inspiring me. I'm gonna hit the decks soon :D

@@djcarlo Try doing a "How they REALLY DJed" video with djs that are actually talented and gifted in djing/mixing. Like Roger Sanchez, Richie Hawtin, James Hype or Louie Vega. Clearly the video would be for the more advanced djs.
