DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent. I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Fun fact: Dustox was actually a viable, if not the best, check to banded Machoke in Gen 6 PU. It was immune to DynamicPunch’s confusion thanks to Shield Dust, quad resisted its Stab, and forced Machoke to run a Rock coverage move. However, Machoke was eventually banned, and Dustox because useless again. At least it still has a cool design :/

2:05 That's actually an interesting idea. A reverse entry hazard, where instead of setting up something to hurt your opponent when they switch in, you heal yourself when you switch in. Or maybe heal yourself when the opponent switches mons? It would discourage you trying to defog or rapid spin because it's a "hazard" on your side. I suppose the question would be how much it heals, and by proxy if it would be linked to typing like stealth rock, or type-neutral like spikes.
@SpectroliteDS2400
@SpectroliteDS2400 2 жыл бұрын
Who knows? maybe it could be a trap you set on the opposing side that drains health from any Pokémon who switch in, healing your own Pokémon by that amount. It could also be able to be stacked to increase the effect (kinda like spikes and toxic spikes), such as one layer draining 1/16th of their health, two layers draining 1/8th, and possibly three layers draining 1/4th (which i'd say is fair since it's a one-time drain that only triggers upon switching in). You could also have something set on your own side of the field that gives you a stat buff such as +1 to speed or attack, boosts the power of your first attack after switching in, or even removes status conditions, the possibilities are endless, and it's frankly amazing that Pokémon hasn't done this yet.

@Dracon350

the problem with that thought though is that you can't make the healing too good, but it has to be worth enough to bother setting the move up in the first place. otherwise you'd just be better of spinning or defogging the hazards away anyways rather than relying on a 'healing hazard' to negate them for you.

In gen 6 the lowest tiers were implied to make sets for all mons which in gen 7 got changed to being implied to make sets for all pokemon on the viability ranking of that tier + deemed fit by tier moderators (so all C+ to D rank pokemon in UU don't have to get an analysis). This lead to quite a few joke analysises for exceptionally bad pokemon in gen 6 PU and gen 6 LC(who had to do all lc mons but reverted to the gen 7 system for the gen 6 reviews after the fact right on the discussion point if someone really had to play and analyse pokemon past Focus Sash Counter Cleffa like Caterpie). As such some gems similar to gen 5 LC magikarp / Gen 6 Beautifly were lost.

An interesting addition: though Beautifly has never been ranked above B- on any viability ranking, Dustox does have some niches in ADV ZU and ORAS ZU! In both, it's a great bulky pivot with reliable recovery and status spreading, though in ORAS ZU it is notably more diverse in its sets, including Defog and bulky Quiver Dance variants.

It's so weird how they make a game like Pokemon, where the message is "All pokemon are good pokemon" but they also design the game like an RPG with progression- the local bugs are meant to give you high power from levels 10-17ish, when most of your other stuff is still at its base form, where your starter evolves and starts to eclipse the bugs. Same with the rattata-types- meant to take over at level 20 when your bugs start falling behind, and fill in the gap until you hit your level 32-36 area where your starter reaches its final form, with the biggest and beefiest mons being found at endgame in the form of legendaries and pseudos. If they were just honest about the idea that you are SUPPOSED to be replacing pokemon and didn't try to cram the narrative about "All pokemon are viable and good and you should love them all" into a game designed to clearly NOT fit that narrative, I think I'd have a lot more respect for the design of the pokemon games. As it is, they feel like they combined a bunch of good but not particularly compatible ideas and just kind of soldered them onto each other without worrying about fit or finish.
@jaschabull2365

I mean, I guess there are more ways to be "good" and "worthy of love" than by being the most useful in competitive battle (it's not like it makes no sense to love your dog if it can't beat up everyone else's dog), but I see what you mean, especially considering how little else there is to do with your pokémon apart from battle with them, certainly anything that's anywhere near as satisfying. I guess it kind of feels natural to have a power progression throughout the game story, as not only does it keep players from coming in over their head at the start of the game, it gives them perks of new stronger monsters to catch the further they keep with the game. Which likely seems to be a big part of why power creep keeps occurring (if each gen didn't introduce something more impressive than the last, the series might read as boring to keep with and more players might only last for one gen, then leave after they've caught the greatest there is to catch). Though at the same time it kind of feels natural for a game where your RPG characters are next to literally your pets to have a sentimental air to the narrative. Being up-front about the game's being meant to have a turnover of these monsters is hard to do without coming off as cynical, or even making the whole series come off as ugly to quite a few. Even as-is, Pokémon training is compared to cockfighting or dog-pit fighting - the series would be be next to impossible to defend from such accusations if the objectifying philosophy towards these creatures were openly sold, rather than only displayed by a few characters put in a bad light like Paul. Basically, I'm not sure it's just a matter of being up-front, as when applied to a 'mon-genre game, the philosophy that's nudged towards in standard RPG gameplay is pretty hard to be candid about without risking leaving a really bad taste in some players' mouths.
@Dracon350
@Dracon350 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaschabull2365 i mean i'll make the argument that that's the game's philosophy isn't even 'all pokémon are good' anyways. i think the game's philosophy is actually 'all pokémon can be useful'. the tagline of the series is 'gotta catch 'em all' and in all the games you're encouraged to catch as many pokémon as you can. the game wants you to experiment with your team, bringing in new members, retiring other ones, maybe even having a rotating team. i don't think at any point does the game try and trick you into thinking that all pokémon are equal. there are plenty of lines about how pokémon are useful and can be good, but the idea that all pokémon are equal isn't a common theme from what i can remember. but the game does make a point about how all pokémon can be useful. sure, you're not gonna take dustox to the elite 4, but having one on your team when you fight Brawly makes him a literal joke due to dustox's quadruple resistance to fighting. plenty of pokémon will never see the light of OU, but pokémon are never, and will never be designed with the competitive scene in mind. they're designed within the idea that you'll encounter them at certain points of the game, and for the most part plenty of pokémon can and are useful in specific instances. there's really only a key few who pretty much will never have any use depending on when you gain access to them, where you'd only use them if there was some sort of sentimental value. that said, i personally believe those type of pokémon are few and far between. i believe most of them have their niches and can be useful if utilized correctly in the context of the games.

I actually like the idea eluded to when he said actually regaining health from stealth rocks. In reality, an ability that restores a set amount of health (like 1/16 or 1/8 health) every time the Pokémon takes any form of damage (direct or indirect) would be a cool idea, unless it’s already done and I’m just forgetting. For anyone who has played Risk of Rain 2, this would be like the Planula boss item and work in the same vein where it wouldn’t really help in the face of massive, flat damage that would one shot but be helpful in staving off chip damage.

@@justinnzamora5366 I know. Ursaring was my absolute favorite pokemon back when I played the games. I had fun as I didn't really play competitively. Facade, Guts, with a status inducing item makes him hit like a train. I used the set. Yet that does nothing with his slow speed and weak defense's in a competitive environment. I've always wanted since I was a kid for him to get a huge, bulky, Kodiak-like brown bear evolution that gave him like 120 hp (+ 30), 100 defense (+25), and 150 attack (+20) But he's never been on Game Freaks radar ever.
