Um that has no bearing on this topic. Sanitary is the key. Your room is not a dining room or apartment. Its for sleeping or study . think about it. Do you have hardened mess on the dishes? Bugs will grow or mold.. You might want to do the dishes yourself for every one in the household. Then search the house for dishes in every corner bedroom bathroom etc. It makes me think you might be ready to get your own place. Your laundry? You should keep in a basket and do your own.

Yes, batching is great! I learned a housekeeping system from 2 sisters who were slobs. They got out of the pigpen with their basic week plan. They had an errand day, a desk day (paperwork, phone calls, grocery list, etc ), a surface cleaning day with laundry, a deep cleaning day for more time-consuming jobs, and a free day to do whatever you want. Batching errands saves time and money, a paperwork day saves time and keeps you focused, cleaning at various levels also keeps you focused and in the end you have time for yourself. So, you might say batching saves time, money, and keeps you focused. In this case your family knows if they need an errand done, they should tell you before Thursday- or they have to do it. Laundry day is Friday, so get your dirty clothes in the hamper by Thursday night. This is how lufe works.

Batching changed my life. Super important to batch all the social media and email messages and comments into certain times of the day. I usually have the afternoon lull of 3:50pm to 4:20pm blocked out for "Internet Responding Power Half-Hour." It's a great way to ease into evening creativity time. Thanks, Tim!

Tim, I recall in a podcast that you said you check out KZfaq comments, so: I'd really like a video about Parkinson's Law. When it comes to actually finishing tasks, I know from all my one-nighter-but-A+ papers in college that this is one of the most effective methods for actually completing things. But it's hard to self-impose it. If you have the time, a video or podcast with further thoughts would mean a lot to me, and I'm sure to others. Thanks :)

For several yearsI have applied this to our practice and training structure, but to the work we do at Beat the Streets. It helps the kids find focus when it can be a challenge for them related to their person characteristics. Batching got my through middle school when I teacher would put a 15 minute clock on the board for a project, I knew all I had to do was focus on it for 15 minutes. Give me an entire day and I would have been lost. Thanks Coach Ferris - Jeff Marsh, Beat the Streets

Batching is very task specific. Emails, for example, are always twice a day: mid morning and mid afternoon. That way I can be responsive without disrupting my flow by jumping at every email that comes in. Laundry depends entirely on how full the basket is. Travel depends on cost-effectiveness. If I'm buying a plane ticket, I want to maximize the return of that expense. Great tip. We probably all do this to some extent, whether or not we're aware of it. But consciously planning it will definitely result in better time and cost management. Purposeful action planned in advance. Doesn't get any better than that.

Always insightful and thought provoking. I like the concept but think it is difficult to apply broadly, depending on the type of job you have. If you are self-employed or independent, it's much easier. But everybody can do this to some extent. I do find it helpful myself with organizing my day. BTW, great jacket!

Great point, but don’t take large scale batching as perfect solution. If you read “The Lean Startup” the author writes all about “batch size” and it’s implications. Large batches can lead to repetition of the same mistakes across a huge amount of different tasks. Small batches allow you to learn and accumulate feedback. Interesting stuff Large batches are great when you 100% know the value, inputs, and outputs of the task.

Hi Tim! Great video, awesome info. My question is: Why do many companies have their staff do many tasks at once ("multi-tasking") which is often super inefficient in the name of maximizing profits, yet, CEOs like yourself actually understand it's actually better to batch tasks and FOCUS on 1 or fewer tasks at a time to actually get stuff done and make an impact on what you're trying to accomplish? It's quite contradictory, no? (And to clarify -- I'm NOT saying that YOU are being contradictory -- many biz owners are). Cheers ✌🏽❤️, Christina

Thanks for introducing the term. I have a comment and a question. This beard style is spot on for you, looks really good; Would you consider batching to be a good idea for studying - 1 subject for every day. Immerse myself with only 1 big topic per day, it would also help with the task-switching downside; or would it be better to study a few hours a day on every(4) subject?

I find huge value through the concept of batching aswell as reflecting on how you spend your time the 'best' possible way. However, I struggle with being a donkey as Derek Sivers would put it - as in I have too many projects and ideas I want to engage in on the same time. This leads me towards my questions: How do you decide what a right decicion is? And hereby, how do focus on a given task/project without dealing with the 'fear of missing out'?
@derekmeyers1513
@derekmeyers1513 6 жыл бұрын
Niclas Norby Really great questions. When I used to teach engineers CAD, I learned quickly how to respond to the inevitable, “What is the best way?” question with, “There isn’t one. There are good ways, better ways, and definitely a wrong way, but no best way.” Because in the design process, while always trying to think ahead (and literally capture that in the modeling so it’s adaptive, almost predictive to change) at the end of the project you’d always see a way it could be improved. Always. Always! And you’d also see some patterns emerge about what’s 85% effective every time, which is a great starting point. As for missing out, I can relate. The truth there is a bit the same - you will miss out. We all do. And that’s good, too. Helps us appreciate what we do have, and be grateful there a so many, many good things in this life that I’ll never experience them all. My advice (vocationally) is pick a thing that makes you resonate, while in service to a greater purpose. Meaning if you want to make art all day, be willing to create art that helps a brand find their image, and share their message. Engineers need artists. Artists need salespeople. Salespeople need engineers. Best of luck to you!

I do most my Landry every 2 or 3 months. I have air tight plastic bags I keep the dirty Landry in. And my clothes seem to wash and smell fine even after being in a dirty Landry bag for up to 3 months. I only have a few sets of bed sheets so I usually have to do a couple bedding loads in the middle at the 1.5 month mark. I have to walk down a metal narrow staircase and then another 50 feet outside to get to the washer and dryer. So I find doing it once a week or every two is a very distracting task if I am trying to get any thing else done. Especially because the washer only takes 30 minutes. So that first load you don’t have time to start and finish anything important. But if I batch my Landry there are only two dryers and two washers so after the first load I only have to do this every 1 hour for 5 to 7 hours. And our machines take quarters, and because there is no change machine only a few people in my complex actual do Landry here. So I haven’t had a day yet out of 5 times doing this where anyone else needed to hop in to do a load. I just make a day out of it and also clean my house or unload groceries in between Landry. I also batch months of groceries which can fill my car up. So the best scenario is to time Landry day when I have all my non perishable groceries still in my car. Because doing a few months of groceries I usually don’t get back until late at night. And I have to park down stairs and carry the grocers up a rickety metal staircase. If I batch grocery unloading with Landry I can unload from my car to my kitchen, and put them up while going back and forth to do another load of Landry. Then I can go back and forth from storing food, doing a months of meal prep, ect. But I typically can’t get anything important, other than organization and cleaning task, done on Landry day because of the constant distraction of having to go to an outside building on the other side of my complex every hour. So batching all my other recurring distraction organization task with it makes that a lot easier.
