Beef is only cheap because the people who raise cows and process meat pass a lot of the costs to everyone. Corn, the major feed of cows in America, is highly subsidized by the American tax payer, the runoff from livestock (feces and wastewater) gets dumped into the environment, the constant ecoli outbreaks that result in billions of dollars a year in medical costs and death, etc... All theses costs don't get added to the cost of beef when you buy at the store. But we all have to pay it while the people who profit don't care.
