Bill Gates is a voracious reader. In conversation with him, it's striking how frequently he cites things he's read. So he doesn't just read a lot of books, but he remembers what he reads as well.
We recently asked Gates how he does it, and he has a very specific approach, as you can see in the video above.
To start, Gates recommends getting a comprehensive overview of a topic, so that you can then understand where various details you might read fit in.

As far as I can tell Mr. Gates was implying that the best way to become a life long curious learner is to first understand the reality in its entirety by learning the big history. Big History is a concept of telling the entire origin story as best of our scientific knowledge and understanding, This has especially helped me, as a teenager I was very anxious about my existence nothing made sense to me, But when I learned about the universe, the origin of life this gave me a great sense of purpose to contribute to the collective knowledge of humanity so that those who would come after us can be better than we are.

Same. My teenage years(still ongoing )of finding a meaning lead to depression leading to more why?'s. Questioning everything from my beliefs to am I really even here leading to curiosity and becoming a life long curious learner now. I heard somewhere that to learn we must get a main focus of a topic and see it has a tree, with added details of the topic as the leaves on the tree's branch.

I'm happy to hear you dove deep, I hope you learned or heard about quantum mechanics, neural plasticity, and metaphysics. life is images and thoughts of the mind expressed. your external reality is the densest part of your mind, without any separation. time and conditionality is just an illusion. we have all that we desire right NOW (the only time that exist).
@Holywalk1
@Holywalk1 5 жыл бұрын
reality is 99.99999999% empty space made of up energy. nothing is solid and reality exist in 2 states, its natural state of quantum wave form and its collapsed state of matter or actuality. we collapse that wave of probability by simply observing it. your computer, body, table, house, chair, office building are all made up of the same quantum particles but just formed in different building blocks that appear to be solid and seperate objects but in all actuality everything is the same and is connected in the quantum world. when you observe matter, what you are seeing is light photons emitting from that object, entering your eye, then electrical signals are created and travel to the back of the brain to the vision cortex where an image is created and is then projected back into your eyes. all reality is a perception created in your brain. your whole life has been your brains best guess of what it thinks reality looks like (brains perception). everything you are seeing right now is actually all taking place inside your dark brain. fascinating stuff man

It tends to be easier studying something when one can relate it to something else. Although schools try teaching the fundamentals of topics they often leave out; 1. The significance of the subject matter( Its use in real life and the interesting ways it can be used) 2. An intuitive way of understanding the topics. Glad to see Bill studies in the way he does... pretty sure there would be a few more Bills if our educational systems taught us to learn this way.

So true what he said about incremental learning. Most of the great mathematicians we learn about in school were philosophers (Pythagoras, Euclid, Decartes). They used math as a model to answer larger philosophical questions. When you understand this, mathematics begins to take on a much deeper and richer purpose.

What he is describing is the principle that people are terrible at remmembering lists, but are incredible at remmembering pathways of items. relating a bunch of objects and remmembering essentially is def easier than remmembering lists in which the items within it are independant of each other, or are categorized to be so anyway.

It's like drawing, if you get super familiar with say anatomy then when you do a life drawing because you understand the body so well, you don't need to retain every section of line information to draw the subject - like a newb would - as someone familiar, you'd only need to observe the general masses and you'll be able to draw much more information while focusing on creating a better image.

The repetitive music (background) disturbs the focus in the interview... Consider eliminating it or at least reducing its volume :-)

It essentially just sounds like systems thinking and creating hierarchal maps of knowledge (like networks). Think Skyrim's leveling paths.

We see free course everyday, we find free learning material everywhere, we actually save important articles to read or to learn across number of platforms. But unfortunately, it is hard to persevere that big flow of knowledge, without loosing most of it!! I find the learning dynamics a very mysteries process specially when one is overwhelmed with what the internet can offer

Simple logic of Gates is what he said in the first sentence. "If you read enough". That's it. Read enough to create a framework in your mind. Keep on reading things and go on creating the framework. Once the framework is created everything you read will feat in your brain. Just keep on reading stuff regardless of you understand it or not because even if you don't understand it in the single go you will eventually understand it in future reads.
