#bobmarley #reggae #behindthemusic
Today, Bob Marley’s legacy is inescapable. First of all, most of his descendants are talented and successful musicians themselves. His Tuff Gong Recording Studio is still thriving and hundreds of thousands visit the various Bob Marley pilgrimage sites throughout Jamaica each year. Heck, Marley is a big reason why tourism continues to be an important industry there. Rita Marley has especially continued to preserve Bob’s legacy. The Wailers also continued after Bob’s death in various forms.
Bob Marley is who most people automatically think of when they think of the entire genre of reggae music. But Marley is not only the best-selling reggae artist of all time. He’s one of the best-selling ARTISTS of all time. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2001, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Bob wasn’t like most pop musicians. He was spiritual. He was reflective. He was extremely generous. According to the historian Roger Steffens, he regularly donated money to at least 6,000 people every month. He never owned a house, yet bought many houses for other people. Bob’s music is unique in that it is political yet unifying. He used his music as a tool for social activism and as a global ambassador for both Jamaica and all African nations. Yet his music became just as popular with the rest of the world. Today, you’re just as likely to hear his music played at an American college fraternity party as you are at a party in Kenya. More than anything, his music is just uplifting. It just makes you feel good.
While Marley is easily one of the most influential musicians in history, his influence extends far beyond his music. He remains a symbol of Jamaican and African pride, social justice, and spiritual consciousness. And he continues to inspire new generations of fans around the world.

Bob Marley is our family icon, altho The Beatles is my favorite band, I grew op on his music. Bob Marley liked the Beatles and bought their records like everybody, and all 4 Beatles liked Reggae (in particular Bob Marley and The Wailers). Bob and George even met in 1975! Both bands represented peace and love and so do I!

It is quite obvious that your fine retelling of Bob's story is taken directly from my book, "So Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley" from W. W. Norton. It has just been reissued with a quote on the cover from the headline of Rolling Stone's review: "This Might Be the Best Bob Marley Book Ever." It is available in English, Dutch, French, Spanish and, the first time ever for a Marley book, in Chinese. Nice work, my brother. - Roger Steffens

Although Tuff Gong was his nickname, it wasnt given because he was saying that it was tough to make it in the music business, he was given the nickname because when he was a kid, the teasing that he experienced for being mixed race got too much that he started to dish out those fists and its said that he won most of those fights.

I just watched the Bob Marley movie and i definitely think it left out so much. If they wanted to include the most important parts of his life they could've split each into 3 movies. 1st movie- his childhood and life in Jamaica/delaware come up with the wailers. 2nd- his life in London, the beginning of worldwide fame. 3rd- the phenomenon of reggae, his time in Europe, Africa, the wailers leaving, his affairs, and finally his death. instead you only got a glimpse into how his life actually was. Furthermore i know his son produced the film and i can understand why Rita's story was important in the storytelling, but this took out a huge part of his story and made it alot about her story, which i do understand because that was his wife but they could've handled it better. I learnt more about his journey on this 20 minute video then the actual movie. I did like when the movie showed glimpses of his childhood though.

Cool video, I’m slowly getting into reggae. All Started when my dad’s friend gave me a Specials CD. Please please please do The Pogues on this series.

I firmly believe that Bob Marley is the most recognisable face in the entire world. More than Jesus himself (due to differing cultural ideas of what he looks like)

Yo Mr. Beat. I'm not sure if you remember me, but a while ago I made comment suggesting a video about Green Day or Blur. What I didn't know at the time is that you make music history videos about bands/artists who are no longer active. So, armed with this newfound knowledge, may I suggest a video about Van Halen?

Very nice documentary... except the funny comment on 18:58... "Bob would visit Africa 3 times in total" and illustrating it by a picture showing Bob surrounded by... African looking people?!? For info, that is a picture of Bob surrounded by... the Jackson brothers, on their 1975 visit to Jamaica (Tito is on the left with the football shirt, Michael is behind him on the right in a striped shirt, next to him is Jackie in a striped orange shirt. Randy wears the yellow shirt, seated next to Bob. Marlon wears a white t-shirt and a bob. Photo by Lee Jaffe)
