Because cgi, always more cgi. It's now anathema to use physical effects. "We'll fix it in post" is God now and definitely isn't there because it both lets the director be lazy and gives the studio more control over everything (

@@wearelegallyrequiredtoeatd3580 In my opinion, the entire point was that there was NOT a lead in the musical. You could even argue, that all Jellicle Cats as a community are the protagonists. Victoria was in the backround. She isn't special. Victoria is only a kitten in her first heat and so the connection between the curious kittens and the older cats. It is not important that she is the one to touch Grizabella but that noone holds her back!

Apparently it’s bc they were all on a set and could very quickly and easily get overheated and pass out, especially so with the dance numbers. However, it doesn’t really excuse the faces and lack of any practical makeup.

It was definitely one of the weirdest thing about it...even on stage they all have ballet shoes on! There is something weird about putting feet onto someone performing ballet moves that are literally impossible without pointe shoes...and even more weird when they are human feet on cats doing pointe work. It was all so weird! 😂

I feel bad for Francesca Hayward (and for basically everyone in the movie - but especially her) because she’s insanely talented and this was meant to be her big break and it flopped.

It's still her big break and the publicity hasn't been against her performance - she carried the show and is the only one who can't be criticised or questioned as to why she agreed to do it! Now we all know who she is and her acting, vocals and dancing were beautiful performances. We'll definitely be seeing more of her and the offers will be pouring in. She was literally the only good thing about this film. 🤩

What I don't get is at this point, they're losing money from all their rushing because they're just slapping something together and charging money to see it. If they just slow down, they'll actually make more because people will actually like the movie. @@exquisite3376 The design choices, etc. are reminiscent of when 'The Great Gatsby' was redone (that was still not a bad film). This version of 'Cats' is a "black" production, though. Characters race and gender swapped, the music, the choreography, etc. are from a hip hop kind of direction.

@@CyberCervine It doesn't have to do with them.. the design choices could have been switched by overzealous white people for all that I know. It's just that Cats is possibly the whitest musical ever written, well, actually, maybe Phantom of The Opera is.. anyway, swapping races of multiple cats and basically injecting a hip hop star and changing the dancing was the result and it wasn't a smashing success.

Cats DO often vocally communicate with each other, often hissing or yowling, just before fights. Look up any cat fight video and you’ll see loads of screeching.

But using real cats wouldn't show much expressions. I watched the live action version of the Lions King and having realistic animals kind of ruined the movie. There wasn't any sad faces shown or anything really funny to look at. I wish they'd just turn the art style into a 3D version. But yes, this would've been a lot better if they'd use cats. Imagine if the cat people were replaced with animated cats. Adorable and more emotions would be shown than with realistic cats

Or do the next best thing and broadcast the US network production. The time of people seeing movie musicals of actual musicals is over. Film it live on stage with an actual audience. It worked for Legally Blonde, Rocky Horror, RENT (the movie was terrible), Kinky Boots, Falsettos, Company, Shrek, The King and I, Miss Saigon, She Loves Me, Follies, Billy Elliot, Gypsy, Newsies....I know I'm missing a few. None of them are box office smashes but the people that care appreciate them, pass it down to their kids, etc. They become successful to the market that would actually pay to see it live if they could afford it or live close enough.

I love the musical, it was my first show as a child and I love the songs and impressive choreography. I knew this movie was going to be awful so I went with a group, we got drunk and laughed and raged our asses off the entire movie. I really reccomend doing it, 1000% more enjoyable.
