I like this video. I'm changing mine for the first time tonight and I was sick of seeing these videos that were 20 minutes of useless stuff. This was to the point and showed exactly how it's supposed to be done. Appreciate the insight. This is the first time I've had to change oil on a vehicle that has a filter like this so I'm glad I researched it a bit

Very good video, gave me the incentive to change my own oil. I'll add a couple tips from my experience. 1. When my neighbor saw the 3-foot circle of splashed oil mine splashed like yours - 0W20 is almost like water), he suggested to use a tall bucket, tip it to the side, and then stick it right under once the bolt is free. Years ago I bought a couple of those gizmos that replace the bolt, have a cap that screws on, and at oil change time you take the cap off and then screw on a gizmo with a bump in the middle that, after it's threaded half way on, pushes in a spring-loaded stopper inside the gizmo attached in place of the bolt that lets the oil flow down a hose. Long explanation, but I might give that a try next time. 2. Eighteen foot pounds on the oil filter housing ) is basically hand tight. I didn't hear the click on my torque wrench and kept going and had a horrible time trying to get that housing back off to reset it to eighteen pounds. I broke the filter wrench at the socket it was on their so hard. There are movies on youtube by mechanics showing how to get Toyota oil filter housings off, so apparently it is not uncommon. So beware: don't over tighten the oil filter housing more than just more than hand tight or your fairly quick oil change turns into a whole afternoon project. 3. The skid plate bolts in the front are tricky on a 2020 Tacoma as they are up under the plastic lower bumper. I would suggest using a long extension and pulling the plastic bumper down to get access. Otherwise it is a job to get those front bolts in to replace the skid plate. I've subscribed now and look forward to more of your videos.

When you cleaned off the drain plug, you used non-chlorinated brake cleaner which is ok to use near plastic trim. But if it was conventional Brakleen, that overspray from spraying that close to the grill would be no bueno.👍🏼

The filter housing is filled rather quickly upon cranking the engine. Its not necessary although it wont be hurting anything doing so. I woked at a lube shop and many makes and models have the oil filter in a location where the oil would just pour back out

You must have pre loosened that oil filter cassette before you made this video, that came off way TOO easy. It took two people to get mine off. We had an 18" breaker bar plus a 24" cheater, with one person hitting the cassette removal tool, fairley hard with a large hammer . . . . . . . .we also had a bottle jack pushing up on the cassette removal tool so it could not slip off. With all that, . . . . . . . it was all I could do to break it loose, and I bench 345 pounds. I think you do your viewers a great disservice by making it look so easy. I have always changed oil in every car, truck and Harley I have owned, and I have never seen one this difficult. I thought that I was going to find it cross threaded, but it was not. This cassette oil filter was a really bad idea THX Toyota!

for anyone prepping to do this, I'd suggest having a larger 1/2" breaker bar and a 24 mm socket for the oil filter housing because those things can be over torqued by the dealership, at least mine was. this was the solution I'd found on tacoma world, if anyone runs into a similar thing

Good job. Using torque wrench and giving the torque specs is a plus. A person would have to be a bit anal to find fault with anything you did. However, if you read the instructions on the box that your oil filter came in, they say not to use a tool to remove the o-rings. The concern is after multiple oil changes the groove where the o-ring goes could become damaged. Probably won't be a problem but worth mentioning that care should be taken. The only other thing that was inaccurate was the mention you made of there being one quart difference between the two marks on the dip-stick. Actually, there is at least 1.6 quarts difference and possibly 1.8 quarts. You should find that information in your owner's manual. And we all know you didn't mean "from empty to full". Those marks represent the minimum safe amount of oil and the maximum safe amount.

JackTannehillPromoter, thanks Jack for all of the positive feedback. I worked at an oil change shop for a year and they told us it was about a quart or so across all vehicles. Thanks for the specific range from the low to high range on the dip stick. I’ll also remove my o-ring with my fingers as well. That seems like a very small chance but I do not want to take any chances.

@@92813justin I have always noticed the metal dust on the end of the dipstick of my 2019 Tacoma. I was concerned metal was coming from the engine so I took it to the dealer but they had no answers. I realized that it is coming from scraping the dipstick tube when there was metal dust just by pushing the dipstick half way into the tube. After watching your video I changed the oil and saw metal dust (not a lot, but I would rather not see any) in the filter canister. I really don't like the idea of that metal in the oil. In my opinion the dipstick tubes should be made from a better metal. Thank you for your reply. I am just wondering if other people are concerned about it.

You should pour about, in this case, a cup of oil into the newly installed oil filter (and oil filter housing). This prevents a dry start of the engine after you're done with the oil change. Notice how in any oil change for any car, the old oil filter is full of oil. Installing a new, dry filter is bad.

I can’t get that metal cap that is holding the filter. Every time I try and get it off takes the whole filter.

Fun fact 😂 since I’m worried about spilling oil. Lost almost a quart with the drain spray 😂🤦🏼‍♂️

Oil filter cap said torque to 25NM which is about 18.4 ft lbs and i was torquing and it seemed a bit execssive. I backed it off and tightened it till it stopped and called it good. Also 30 ft lbs on the drain plug squishes down the gasket quite a bit. Is that normal. I used a fel pro gasket for Toyota

Hot oil. Why? If the oil is hot most likely the pipes underneath are hot. Run the vehicle a minute or so that will get the oil wsrm enough to flow out just fine. Take off the oil filler cap before you remove the oil pan plug. That will let the air flow through the system and help the oil drain much easier.always place some cardboard under the car so you don’t get oil all over your driveway. A piece of old rug will work great to. You can find these in the trash.

I think you got more oil on the ground than in the drain pan.

Why don’t you prep the oil filter with new oil like you would any old car? I just put 30k on my 2020 Tacoma.. but am used to changing my oil in a ‘98 4Runner

You could, the point 2 seconds is not a big deal. What really matters is changing it every 5k miles

Anyone else struggle with this engines dip stick? It gets stuck putting it in and pulling it out... Yes I know how to use a dipstick I've been changing my own oil for 20 years and never had dipstick issues like this one

It is weird, place the flat part towards the engine so it bends with the tube but no matter what you can see small shavings of metal because the tube does so many bends which is not fun
