I've performed all oil/filter changes on my '17 Taco since buying it new....it gets easier the more you do it. Between my lift and driving it up on one paver stone each tire, there's enough clearance to do it lying down on a big piece of cardboard comfortably. I'm 50+ and don't nessecarily like crawling around on the ground, but I have peace of mind it's done right and no stripped skidplate bolts, no oil spilled all over the engine block, things aren't over/under tightened, not over/under filled, etc.... I also save $20 to $30 while still using the best filter & oil. My engine in the TRD OR calls for 6.2 qt....I put in a case of 6 and it fills it perfectly near the full line. I've got it down to a half hour or so taking care not to spill a drop.

This guy is good!! At least now I know how to do it. I did not read all of the comments, but, after only owning Toyotas since 1993 (two, 250K miles on each, original clutch on each), if I had seen this before I bought my 2019 Tacoma (free oil changes just ran out), I would have checked into other models. Remove skid plate? Filter is not near drain plug? Insert plastic piece to drain some used oil? TWO o-rings? Special tool to remove filter housing? Maybe two tools?? Off topic I guess, but ... I last had a 2002 Tundra. This 2019 Taco has no armrests, a one-level console, phone charger is buried at bottom of inside of console, glove box contents spill out, lots of engine noise, several owner's manuals, the biggest of which is 700 pages, with diagrams that do not correspond to what I see on my dashboard, all kinds of safety warnings EVERY time I start up, A/C defaults to 'recycle air' every time I start up, cannot dim dashboard lights completely, smart cruise control slows down "out of an abundance of caution" when you get anywhere near the vehicle ahead, a warning when the temp gets below 37 degrees (!!)..... I was in need of a new pickup quickly, so I jumped on this. It is reliable, yes, but overall is not what I expected. Just venting.

I would have put the drain plug on the filter housing back on and prefilled some new oil in it... I have heard for decades how important that is on startup. In October, 2018, Toyota switched the filter system from the cartridge to the self-contained canister on the 2ZR-FXE, 1NM (as featured on the Lexus CT200h, Priuses and 4-cylinder hybrids by Toyota/Lexus). I really thought that was a great move and played a very minor part in my purchase. Let's just say it was a "yay!" moment.

I just had the toyota dealer do my 30K service on my tacoma, and I decided to do the oil change. The first two bolts to take off the pan were tightened so tight, I stripped the head of the bolts with ratchet and 6 sided sockets. So I had to take it in to the local shop so they could charge me 70 bucks for an oil change I already had all the parts for. I seldom go you dealerships because of several bad experiences, chalk up another one. I figured the 30k service would be my last chance at getting repairs free if something was wrong, so i am back to doing things myself. I do love your video's and your attention to detail, I just wish all service worked under the same principals :)

The dipstick is reading over full because the oil filter canister is still empty, as the engine hasn't been run yet. Once it runs for a bit the filter fills with oil and the level will drop. I like to pour some oil directly into the canister with the new filter, to minimize the void in the flow upon first startup. It's probably overkill, but it's easy enough to do since this particular filter isn't installed on a tilt.

I have Toyota care with free oil changes for 2 years on my 2020 Tacoma. Difficult to mark the filter to see if it really gets replaced. Might have to put a small piece of paper on the skid plate and see if it is there after the oil change. Time is money to mechanics, so skipping this step might happen. My 2005 Tacoma had the oil filter on top of the engine and was easy to change.

I recently did my first oil change on my 2019 Taco. I made a mess too. I'll do better next time.

David Kaplan I did a couple of major mistakes when I started servicing my car 3 years ago. I literally had all of my oil spill out, so just be careful you don’t double gasket your oil filter and torque the oil pan bolt well and proper. Luckily my engine survived my stupidity.

I’ve heard of people draining the auto transmission, oops. Instead of the oil pan drain.

Awesome video, easy to follow and very informative! Subscribed! I had a ‘16 TRDPro off-road and upgraded to a 19’. The oil filter being located underneath is a kind of sketchy but easy to remove.

Thanks. Just changed my 2016 Taco for a 2020. Useful video. Can you check filter oil seal if you put back the skid plate before running the engine? Watch all your videos, appreciated.

When draining the oil filter put an empty soda pop bottle over the plastic throw-away drain piece before pushing it into the oil filter cap = no mess. And it's silly to let it keep dripping, just pull it back off and finish the job. And yes, you can get a better oil filter cap removal tool. The one you are using is designed for the 1.8 liter Corolla engine. That one is not deep enough for the teeth on the bottom of the wrench to engage with all the contact points on the larger oilf filter caps if the 2.5 liter and larger Toyota engines. Fortunately it worked for you but sometimes you really need the better one especially if the last person to do the oil change used an impact wrench (or his name was Bigfoot). Also, the instructions on Toyota's filter box says NOT to use a pick to remove the o-ring. Chances it will do any damage are slim to none but that's what they say.

You didn't put the removal tool all the way in and up. The 3 slots on the cup should fit and be push all the way up on the oil filter housing with the 3 slots
