The Patient Story

Күн бұрын

Renée first met cancer at 18 when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. After undergoing intense chemo, radiation and a bone marrow transplant, she reached remission. But she was told there was a chance of developing a second cancer. And 17 years later she was diagnosed with stage 2 metastatic breast cancer.
In this story, she shares how she developed a second cancer, her miraculous surprise of finding out she was pregnant after being told she was infertile from chemotherapy and how she continues to “thrive” as a survivor.

Thanks for sharing. You have been through so much and my heart goes out to you. I am a cancer survivor - mastectomy, chemo and hormone meds. I honestly believe that it makes you think about how precious each day of life is and how important it is to keep doing kind things for others. I love when you said keep your dreams alive .. and I agree that on the good days it helps to do those things that make us feel good. I pray you’re doing well and I that you’re enjoying your life with your beautiful miracle .. your daughter🦋💕

So frustrating to be called anxious. Of course one is anxious about cancer. As a doctor, one might be even more so because of one's medical knowledge (which could be intimidating to some medical professionals)That should be met with compassion and understanding. The patient should have every right to advocate for oneself. As a nurse, I have seen how advocation by the patient and family has led to better outcomes and care. One also should not feel reprimanded, judged, or be hesitant about seeking to understand more about the care process and the reasoning for treatments regarding one's own body. Of course in a respectful way, but paternalism in medicine is not acceptable in these present times, and the dismissal of the psycho/social needs that many patients experience seems like a form of that. I think many Drs are just so busy that they want/ need things to be as efficient as possible and don't always take the time to really listen to the patient. You now have first hand knowledge of what things are like from a patient's perspective.May you have great health from here on out.😊
