Watch Christine's Part 1: • My First Breast Cancer...
Christine Elliott was diagnosed with breast cancer at 31 and during treatment, she unexpectedly discovered she had stage 2A lung cancer, despite experiencing no symptoms. At first, doctors thought it was insignificant, but Christine's persistence and intuition compelled her to advocate for further investigation. She insisted on a biopsy, which revealed a lung tumor.
In this conversation, Christine voices how she advocated for her health, what lead to her second cancer and her message to always listen to your body.

The biggest lesson we learn from cancer is that we need to be our own advocate. It is difficult for oncologists to listen and patients often feel dismissed when we are told "Don't worry about it" Read every report you have, research, ask for explanation's for anything you don't understand. Take back your power it is your life.

hi, my mom had lung cancer, died 3 months after dx, never smoked. I suspect it was radon. She was a full time housewife while dad was away at sea, raising 4 kids. u are wonderful, pretty, and a blessing. Im happy you are a survivor. Hugs from Ontario.

Thank GOD you were your own advocate! How do they "forget" a CT scan on a cancer patient? Unacceptable. Bless your heart. Thank you for sharing this story to encourage others to do the same

I live in a small country state where there aren't a whole lot of options for specialty doctors, so you are lucky to be able to get second options. I went in for shortness of breath and was told I had Pneumonia and a mass on my right lung. One pulmonary doctor working for that whole hospital came in telling me he was going to do this that and the other and didn't even let me have a word or question during his speech then abruptly left. There was a nurse present and I mentioned to her - I was not too fond of his attitude. She agreed, I asked her what I could do for a second opinion, I had to be transported to another hospital an hour away. I have to find that nurse and thank her for being my advocate :)

I found your story interesting and informative because I had an experience about 20 years ago that was on the other side. I had colon cancer and after a resection I was undergoing chemo and during that they did some scans and found a nodule in my right lung. They tried to do a biopsy, but weren't able to, probably for reasons similar to yours, though I don't remember specifically. So my oncologist wanted me to have surgery and I agreed and they quickly removed my lower lobe in my right lung. The nodule turned out to be benign. I didn't really have complications and it did not turn out to have any significant effect on my quality of life so I don't have any really strong feelings about it. I am glad that your self advocacy has worked out for you. Maybe I should start engaging in more of that as I am going through a second cancer journey, this time leukemia (AML). I wish you the best and congratulate you on your success in self advocacy.

Thanks for sharing Christine. I agree, there's an intuition we have about our bodies that's so strong and more often than not, completely right...and for the most part we are ignored by the medical system. I've been through it a few times and am going through another moment of that now with a potential breast cancer diagnosis I'm waiting to hear back about. What you said about taking your own medical records in your own hands also matters and has been life changing for me as well because it's true how often you find doctors aren't looking closely look at results or look at them at all - even if there are subtle changes - they matter. I'm so sorry for the trauma post-op especially that you experienced waking up from the lung surgery...it's true that the emotional trauma (not being listened to) combined with the post-op complications they don't always let you know about can really make for a terrifying experience in an already unknown place to be. As another 30-something, I really find that young people aren't taken seriously especially with potential cancer diagnosis. They really do a by the book "well this cancer doesn't run in your family, so you must not have it" approach which is so frustrating. So for that reason I think it's incredible that completely solo, you fought to get that second diagnosis too. You have also given me a lot to think about about the general safety of my apartment, including the radon which I hadn't even realized was a thing (I live in a basement suite with a lot of cracks, very old building right next to the utility closet and the foundation of the house which I've seen, has so many cracks).

Personally I think most cancers are environmental. I’m kinda paranoid about dish soap for dishwashers. There’s no way a low water wash is rinsing the dishes well and there’s residue on them that we can’t see.

They leave things far too late sometimes. I wish i had spoken up when they left the tiny spot in my lung nearly 6 months post cervical cancer treatment. By the time thy rescanned, it was 2 cm and had spread to a node in my windpipe. Im now stage 4 incurable. Im not saying this to scare people but make people see that they need to speak up for themselves. If you doubt it, say it!! I doubted the length of time they left it and this was my result for not voicing that. I wish everyone long, happy and healthy lives ❤️

I was in hospital once and a nurse came in with two pills. Before taking them I asked what they were. She snapped at me, just take it. The surgeon spoke to me later that day and said patients don’t usually ask that question, they just do as they are told. Once I was given someone else’s medication and I checked them like I always do. I rang the nurse, said I have someone else’s pills. I had nevErseen her move so fast. I agree, you have to stand up for yourself.

Scary story! I am being treated for breast cancer. I have had one round of chemo, a lumpectomy and removal of sentinel lymph nodes (negative). After surgery, they switched the chemo to Kadcycla, 14 doses, and 30 radiation treatments. I have had 4 of the Kadcycla treatments and 6 radiation. It would be awful to find out that you had another cancer while still being treated. Every test will scare you from now on.

What hospital or medical center was this? Sound like they need to be taught how to investigate and pay attention. It is so enraging that you would have had a very bad outcome since you had fkg lung cancer that would have been untreated. And that they had the scans to see it but didn't bother looking at them. Outrageous.

When you are saying your healing or finding your cancer was heaven sent, what does that mean for those who don't get that? That's hard to swallow. It's actually not Biblically true according to sound doctrine for this current dispensation of grace. Paul is our apostle. He wrote Romans to Philemon for the church the body of Christ today. Good isn't healing people today. That was for national Israel who was under a covenant with God. There is no covenant today. So, what happened with you was simply chance. I hope you have heard and trusted the gospel that saves, however! Christ died for our sins, he was buried, he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. Believe that by faith - no works allowed - and God will save you, forgive all your sins - past, present, and future! You will be complete in Christ and he will seal you with his promised Holy Spirit. Amen
