The president at that time (Truman) decided to make a moral (and right) decision and fired a general (MacArthur) who wanted to use nukes to stop the PRC from backing the PRK (by ‘sowing a sea of radioactive cobalt’). We pursued an armistice which was signed under the Eisenhower administration. The Korean War was a lot more violent than a lot of World War II battles, but the US could’ve won it. We chose peace because it would’ve been a pyrrhic victory with a large amount of lives lost on both sides. The US leadership at the time also probably also didn’t want to weaken it’s military capabilities in light that the Cold War just started and we gave one metric fuckton of weapons to the Soviet Union during World War II.

I was born in China but lived in the US most of my life. I married an American and I'm a doctor here saving American lives. I urge people to not lean into fear of Chinese people in general -- if you see every Chinese person as a potential adversary here to commit subterfuge, you're going to put yourself on an inexorable path toward hatred. Please just remember that most of us left our home countries and our extended families because we wanted a better life here, not because we are somehow trying to bring down the US from the inside (seems the US is doing a great job of doing that on its own lately)
