My thinking is that in this Shaba guruji is telling us that dressing up the body does not matter u can wear kind of clothes and jewelry as expensive and designer as u can afford but it matters what is ur soul wearing ...... what ur soul qualities are ..... are you caring loving respectful towards others or arrogant and disrespectful and putting other people down around you ...... Guruji is always a dressing the soul ...... this body is given to us and we can only meditate within this body and b one with this universe and free our soul from sufferings .... so we do have responsibilities towards our bodies as well to keep it clean and healthy and keep presentable in the society 💕💕💕💕🙏

One thing I do really admire about Sikhs is that you do see the value in standing out as a Sikh. In the Yogananda tradition of Kriya Yoga I practice Sri Yogananda discouraged Westerns from trying to look Hindu. As a practicing Hindu from the West I feel that I DO wish to identify as who I am spiritually! So I just do it in a subtle way. I don't go about in a Sari (although I wish I could!) But I wear my sacred Rudruksha beads and try to never go out in the standard Western garb of jeans, tennis shoes, and tee shirt! I do try to balance it, like you were discussing. I feel at my best when I take time and wear a Hindi style outfit, but I don't wear makeup really, or obsess over my hair style. I try to present myself in a certain way, but still try to radiate inner beauty instead of relying on "beauty" products.

Depictions of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is adorned in fine jewelry, exquisite feathers, gold tipped weaponry and the finest clothing of the times. He didn't ride a donkey, but stallions. Is that not clear enough how a Khalsa should carry themself? Regardless of your means, Khalsa is royal and Nobel and should be reflected in our image, not because our ego says so, but because guru demands it. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Turban is a symbol of royalty, a crown that promotes a higher standard of consciousness. During the Mughal rule/invasion of India, no one other than Mughals were allowed to wear a turban, carry weapons/arms, keep horses (cavalry) or maintain an army of soldiers. Guru Har Gobind ordained that Sikhs are not inferior to the Mughal reign, and instituted the notion of Miri Piri. The last master Guru Gobind Singh also followed his predecessors path and administered the Khalsa brotherhood. Khalsa belongs to Waheguru and not a particular group or society of people, hence we great each other with the term, "Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ke Fateh". An amritdhari Sikh should always maintain a higher standard of identity as we are representing our Gurus legacy and traditions.

I’m a Yogi Sikh! Also a Yoga teacher, Amrithari, White woman. Yogi peeps wear it to take care of their tenth gate and to maintain focus and contain positive energy from mantras and meditation. They may take it off after a Yoga camp though the meaning is there. I feel instagrammers can make Dastars and clothes seem in a vain way, while it’s great to influence in a positive Sikhi way, do it to a larger audience with companies so more people see Sikh female and males in the public eye from a place of values. I think pride could also be self care, self worth and positive body image. To be enough no matter what people’s perceptions are.

thankyou for your comment I found it interesting, its good to consider a variety of perspectives. Generally Amritdhari Sikhs don't part with their turban as such but keep it, owing to the history of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji. Meditation is certainly foremost necessity. The vanity aspect is something I don't like. Hence tie my dasthar without a mirror., maybe im too carefree. Practicality...brings other priorities. Self image, confidence could be empowered from deeper matters, positive actions, behaviour, deeds.

A big thing to remember and reflect on whilst looking through the comments section: Once you've progressed in your simran, test yourself this way. The things you see and say are a reflection of where your mind is at. If your mind is pure, you will not see faults. You'll see the beautiful Sikhi that Waheguru has blessed upon us. If your mind is corrupt, you will find points to condemn and debate, encouraging bigotry. The choice is yours, pyario.

VJKK VJKF Im 16 years old and ive started to wear a dastaar last year. I have been very self conscious and as a result wore light makeup. I was wondering is it wrong to wear makeup such as moisturizer foundation, clear mascara, curling your eyelashes, makeup isnt a permanent thing and comes off quite easily. i recently saw an amritdhari woman absolutely plastered in makeup and thats not what i wanted to do. is more of a natural look acceptable? there is a large debate with people i know. one massi tells me im on my own journey whilst my mama who is a nihang strongly recommends i do not wear it. it is confusing as well being at such a young age. any advice guys?

Hey! Women are not allowed to have make up in Sikhism. Sikhism is about caring about what's on the inside not outside. But in the end, it is your personal choice. Do what you feel like doing. You shouldn't follow it if you don't want to. There's no point in not doing any make up and then having grudges. Do what you want! Take Care!

I find it hard to understand how someone so knowledgeable does not express the shabad 'Gur Satgur Ka Jo Sikh Kahave' (whoever calls him / her self a Sikh). The shabad goes onto explain who can be regarded as a Sikh in the Guru's eyes. What we may say is regarded as a Sikh is our interpretation, but only those Sikhs that follow the teachings of the Guru will be regarded as Guru Ji's Sikh.

Fashion or irresponsible fashion, is certainly a contributor to whole climate change concern, another angle to consider. Eco consciousness cant be undervalued. Don't know a lot about cotton industry. Certainly turban material can be recycled in various ways. My boy adopted turban transitioning from patka, of own volition, after a trip to London museums, where he was amazed to spot, smartly dressed professionals adorning a Sikh turban. On returning home, first day back at school, he asked if he could wear a turban to school. The bit that I think is sad, is the divorce from the values the Turban represents. eg. the Turbaned Sikh with a cigarette in hand. Politicians, who adopt Turban for campaigning, with no alignment to basic humane policies, and more so a failure to engage them, to adopt consider alternative.

It requires lots of mental strength to stay in Sikh bana (beard+ turban for males, suit dupatta for females) outside India..beard trimming, hair cuts not expected from Sikhs at all weather baptised or not..it's one silly thing started by few of us Sikhs to tie turban on any other non sikh..it's silly...few communities have their own head gears- similar to Sikhs..this lady in video without dupatta- it's not expected of her. The flower on her head gear is another awkward thing...these overseas Sikhs will have their own way in times to come due to local influence....in India too, we see lot of beard and hair cutting in Sikh males and hair cutting in ladies..all this is not what is expected of a Sikh..in plain terms, Sikh man has to have full beard, head hair and turban while lady must have dupatta with suit with no hair cut..head gear is required for the baptised ladies... nothing additional for Sikh males upon baptism..it's just this simple.,..rest all is getting justified by people due to social needs or environment they are living in...putting makeup by Sikh ladies or colouring hair has not been much debated even in India and Sikhs are generally ok for both...

@Veronika Zimmermann basically, it has to be like that...but it has been changed in current generation who are in their twenties..just to give you an idea..key purpose is not to be in a revealing dress or very tight clothing..I hope you get what I mean..but it's now common to see baptised ladies wearing jeans, coats, having head gear but are without dupatta..I am no authority nor do I can dictate...but I feel sad on this utter dilution of sikhi norms... people can be heard saying all this is ok and Guru Sahebaan only talk about internal purity of thought...so it's their views...I feel sad people going to Gurdwara in jeans top... really cannot help it as justification is people of all walks are allowed and nothing in written anywhere on this...I on my part , am not baptised, but, try to follow Sikhism in traditional way, despite being working woman..never had an urge to switchover to jeans etc... tomorrow Sikhs overseas might start doing kirtan in English or other languages..Times are such and people use God gifted brains to justify just anything in name of " their liking, personal views, open mindedness, not written anywhere"..etc reasons... Probably my reply is too much worded..sorry about that....

@Veronika Zimmermann Sikhs have been based out in India traditionally and historically..It's been this way here - the things I wrote earlier...I think I have stated that in India too, few of our people wear Western dresses... Probably, being in overseas, it might have never occurred to you that suit/ dupatta is the basic dress majority of us wear here in India...but I am surprised if you are following Sikhism...it's ok if you are doing whatever way people there told you...but my explanation has been about how it was supposed to be upheld and how the dilution is happening..back to your question- may I humbly ask you where you have read the way you are doing now...?? You may find it odd...but I again repeat, there are no written reference but only tradition which get passed on to generations...In Indian context ...but dilution happening now and very much visible for everyone to see..both in India and overseas...Sikhs were not meant to be part of worldly rat race...basic duties - work, pray and serve...Seva and Simran...." Bhai prapat manukh dehuria...Gobind Milan ki eh Teri bariya"....a supreme supreme life a sikh is meant to live....a unique way ....a unique identity...but we are more interested to intermingle in our deeds and appearances with the world while we were meant to stand out.. .I am not sure if you understand this later part but that's the spirit with which sikhs are supposed to conduct themselves..not under any force or compulsions but the path of Guru Ji naturally turns a Sikh into such a being...

@Veronika Zimmermann You're right, Sikhism that generally exists today has been heavily influenced by Victorian Christianity. Also, when these neo Sikhs came on the scene, they began campaigning to change the way Punjabi women dressed... they believed it was inappropriate from their Victorian culture appropriation. Generally White Sikhs of Yogi Bhajan/Kundalini far excell Punjabi 'JATS' in Sikh wisdom.
