Their video: • How Water & Clouds boo...
This video talks about how clouds interact with climate - what happens when we warm the planet, and will clouds act as a positive or a negative feedback? It turns out that water in the Earth's atmosphere has a complex relationship with the Earth's temperature, both in clouds and as water vapour. To visualise this interaction, I made a 3D visualisation in Blender, reading in climate model output via Python.

Estimating from getting soaked a few times: raincloud might be 25mm of water, a thunderhead might be 3 times that. So up to 1 glass of water's thickness falling across hundreds of acres. Wouldn't hurt much, but it'd flatten crops, make the night colder (no clouds to hold in heat), and floooooood.

Hi! This video is quite informative, and the visualization is excellent. Thanks! :) One question that pops up in my mind is whether different cloud types have varying heating effects?
@fromnorway643
@fromnorway643 3 жыл бұрын
High altitude clouds produce more warming than low altitude clouds. Both types absorb infrared radiation from the ground and both types emit infrared radiation to space from their tops. However, high altitude clouds being much colder will emit much less radiation to space than low altitude clouds do, therefore reducing the total heat loss. If for instance the surface temperature is 20°C and the temperature at 10 km altitude is -45°C, cloud tops at that altitude will emit only about *150 watts* of infrared radiation per square metre. Conversely, cloud tops at 1 km altitude and 13.5°C (assuming 6.5°C of temperature drop/km) will emit about *380 watts* per square metre, more than twice as much as the clouds at 10 km do. Since all clouds also reflect sunlight - which has a _cooling_ effect - the net effect of low clouds tends to be cooling while the high clouds are warming. Another factor is the size of the droplets they are made of since clouds consisting of small droplets are brighter (more reflective) and thus more cooling than those consisting of larger droplets.

6:21 -- You're going to need to explain to some viewers that water vapor is a condensing gas at Earth-like temperatures (and perhaps that cloud type and optical depth are also temperature-dependent), while CO2... not so much. Once in the air, CO2 is not going to condense out; only rock weathering (over hundreds of thousands of years) and plants and algae (over much short periods) are going to draw it down. If you don't explain this, you risk a bunch of ppl spewing the following non-sequitur: "water vapor is the most important greenhouse gas, so CO2 doesn't matter!".
@adanactnomew7085

I don't much care for the fact that the uncertainty amongst climatologists, regarding the effects of clouds on climate sensitivity, was hardly mentioned in this video. Giving a passing mention to the wide range of models without acknowledging this, is missing half the picture in a video that is supposed to be about this very subject. Are low clouds decreasing? Are high clouds increasing? How might you quantify the magnitude of that influence on climate without accurate global data? Do you have it? because without it, you cannot confirm your model's accuracy. This is the nature of the beast. Please don't lead your audience away from the realm of observation and hard data so carelessly.

What happens when electro magnetic changes in the ionosphere cause thermosphere warming thereby melting the permafrost turning out all the frozen co2. We see rapid changes in our past climate. So fast that it is blamed on impact. Solar particles perhaps? Such a big mistake in the models concerning water vapor. Doesn’t it shake your confidence concerning the role people have in co2. I mean it seems like jumping to a conclusion to say we didn’t realize how much warming was caused by water vapor. Oh water vapor must be amplifying human effects. Really? How about oh! I guess we didn’t fff it up so bad aye? But from what I understand no funding supports that idea. It is literally a career killer in the science funding. Thank you for reporting the mistake in the model that water vapor holds in more heat than previously thought. What I wonder is what was that mistaken greenhouse effect blamed on prior to this discovery? My take on the models was people. So why not say oops it was water vapor not people instead of saying it amplifies all the other human co2 effects? Thanks again for keeping it real. Reporting the water vapor mistake brings you credibility so I hope my question is not dismissed as a close minded view. I just don’t follow the logic.
