In this video, I will be dissecting season 4 episode 1 of Daria titled, "Partner's Complaint". The episode centers on Daria, Jane, Brittany, and Kevin who decide not to work on an economics project together. In their settled pairs, they face prejudice and even extortion while working on their projects.

I like that Daria was called out on her narrow-minded morality. So many of those shows are desperate to not make their white audience uncomfortable when approaching these subjects, especially when the main white character is involved on the antagonistic side. But that's really the best way for us to learn. It's easy to point at the overt racist that our hero goes up against and go, phew I'm not like that. It's much harder to point at the 'casual' stuff that our hero does and go, oh no I've done that.

What makes Daria such a compelling character is the fact that she’s flawd. It would be so easy for the show to go down the easy route of “Daria is always right, if ur not pessimistic you are dumb” but the show goes deeper. Daria is flawed. The other characters, although kind of one note at times, like Britney, are still enjoyable.

As much Daria likes to play it as if she's too cool for school the show makes it pretty her detached monotone, expression and active disinterest in all things normie and conventional it plainly just a coping mechanism for long standing emotional neglect born from a career oriented parents frankly under developed social skills and the resulting attachment issue she has are often a source of conflict between her and Jane because she's afraid she'll lose her one the few people that gets where she's coming from.

Yeah, totally... and in many episodes, other characters confronts Darias opinions and views, and the show dosn't want to make Daria look like she is always right... for some reason though, I see more people calling her problematic and stuff... I guess it's because the current paradigm is about being as judgmental and sometimes morally superior as Daria, but being super positive and sensitive about everything and critize only the groups that are currently being allowed to critize

As someone who was obsessed with Daria in high school, this was an episode that always stood out to me because it's an example of how mature the conversations were compared to most other shows about teenagers (that I knew of at least). The fact that Daria, Jane and Jodie could have such heated, but also very intelligent disputes about things like prejudice, moral grayness, or Daria's general bad attitude, and the fact that they could convincingly make amends and remain on good terms afterwards is a testament to how well written they were. I'm also a sucker for TV and movie scenes where one character starts to apologize to another character and the other person doesn't need them to finish, so Jane's "hypothetical" scenario and Daria's reaction to it always moves me.

I related to Jodie growing up. I was the smart black girl who was expected to be perfect. My family did pressure me to succeed in life and become a lawyer. I was afraid of being seen as a stereotype so I did everything I could to be seen as the opposite. I also went to a mostly white school and I did often feel like a token. Unfortunately the pressure I received from my family and even myself caused me to experience burn out in my mid 20’s. I also faced alot of racism as well and it really got to me. To this day, I will never forget when a white client at my previous job threatened to call the police on me for daring to defend myself when she accused me of probably being a thief trying to steal the work computers at my previous job. Although I did graduate college with my degree, I didn’t get into law school. I overworked myself to the point that I had a breakdown and even stressed myself so bad that I had chest pains and ended up in the hospital twice. I understand that many black parents want better for their kids but please don’t pressure your kids too much. If you aren’t careful, you will teach your kids that their self worth is based off of how hard they work and how successful they are. I’m still learning how to set boundaries in every aspect of my life and I’m learning that my self worth is not based off of how hard I work. Everyone makes mistakes and that’s ok.

what got me about this episode was, from what i understood, that daria never considered the situation being "about race" (and i think later in the series, perhaps in a conversation regarding college? jodie even points out that daria isnt remembering that its a different bag for students of color), and that was part of what led to the friction. daria doesnt see jodie any different to anyone else, and in that she both respects jodie on jodies own merits, but , as shown in this episode, completely overlooks that jodie might approach this situation with strategies she's had to employ due to being discriminated against. daria is colorblind, but in that colorblindness often misses how the rest of the world is Not colorblind in practice, and that combined with her personal views was what caused the problem. daria is miffed about what she sees as nepotism in the second meeting, forgetting that sometimes connections like that are what people of color need to employ to get around prejudice where they can. a good element in the setup for the conflict, imo

I'm usually also very black and white in my thinking, just like Daria, but I don't think Jodie did anything wrong in this scenario. She didn't lie or manipulate to get the loan. She told the truth about her family and pre-emptively contradicted racist stereotypes that the second loan office might have had. I judge Daria more for being harsher on her friend than the racist guy. Jodie shouldn't have to name-drop her dad to be taken seriously, but there's nothing inherently wrong with doing that when she just wants to be treated with basic respect.
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 2 ай бұрын
I mean, Jodie said she didn't want to rely on her dad then immediately relied on her dad. I'd argue that the world isn't fair, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with leveraging whatever levers you can to get what you need in life, that you shouldn't need to apologize for using connections since nobody truly gets by on merit, so in that specific sense you're right, Jodie did nothing wrong. But if that's the case, then why storm out in a huff at the first bank? That, I think, is really the problem here with what Jodie did: if you're going to storm out in a huff at the first bank, then what's the point of then getting the exact same outcome, through the exact same means, at the second?
@genesistafari9006

@@SchulzEricT Like Daria mother explained, she’s pragmatic just because she didn’t want to use her father as leverage doesn’t mean she wouldn’t have too. I was buying a car for the first time- I have awful credit, and a Black family rolls up in a fancy new suv and were looking at a car I was also interested in buying. Then, he supposedly ran my credit and said my interest rate for a new car would be 7% for "people like me". Needless to say, I didn't buy the Acura. This happened in 2019.

Jane is her BFF and her social/creative equal and with Jodie they are intellectual equals and almost a second friend. disappointment. To have her friends essentially "shift" priorities while she remains the same it is difficult for her. Daria was such a good show. I always liked how they never sugar-coated what a place like Lawndale can be like for kids like Jodie and Mack. Even the fact that they were dating each other is made pretty clear in the homecoming parade episode that they weren't the "token black kids dating each other" but two kids who were dating in part because they had a shared experience that no other kids in the school could relate to. It does sometimes suffer from being aggressively '90s/pre-9/11 (I definitely think a Jodie of today would have at least mentioned the first guy's racism in her presentation), but I remember most other teen comedies at the time taking the "racism is over" tack.

Jodie Landon's main function on Daria was as the person who was approximately as smart as Daria, but willing to play the games and fit into the systems that others had set up rather than rejecting them the way Daria did. Like Daria, she knew those systems were biased and screwed up, but also knew that she didn't really have the option of deciding not to play and instead needed to learn how to work those systems to her advantage. And this was no exception: Jodie taught Daria important lessons about practicality and prejudice in this one. In others, Daria has taught Jodie when she needed to recognize that the only winning move is not to play.

I’d argue that Jodie wasn’t just willing to play the game but lacked the privilege to reject the systems that Daria openly subverts. As a mixed girl myself with black and white. I was raised to be aware of certain prejudice against black people and people of color in general but I also knew that with me being mixed with white and looking light skin with some white features I knew I was also privileged that I didn’t experience much prejudice or it wasn’t as bad as my fully black friends and my dark skin friends too. this episode always remains in my memory as I see myself in Daria as I’m also pretty matter of fact, have a black and white mindset/ ethics and is usually pessimistic most of time to people always thinking I’m right most of the time but at the same time I also completely understood where Jodie was coming from as I’ve seen family and friends having to work twice as hard than others to even be considered for something or even looked at. So this episode was really two sides of me arguing, what I was taught and raised vs. my own mindset and it was very confusing and conflicting. Seeing how you put into words and perspective of both sides of things I feel like I’ve gotten a better understanding as I usually see things black or white (no pun intended) the grey area was always something hard for me to understand and see so thank you for this video! 🫶👏👏

This analysis is so nuanced that i don't have much to add other than kudos! I am diving into your content and love how you break things down. One other layer to this is that Daria is heavily autistic coded in this episode. This is one of the few times that she really interacts with someone other than Jane and later Tom. She has her rigid thinking challenged and because of her respect for Jodie, she makes an effort to see explore different viewpoint. Daria's unwaivering honesty gave Jodie a chance to drop her mask of respectability and speak her truth uncensored. It is also a great portrayal of a neuroduvergent character interacting with a neurotypical character without these traits being a plot point. You know, it was episodes and interactions like this that made the rumor of a Daria/Jodi-centered revival actually garner some interest. Daria for all her high standards on how the world should work is still blind to the fact that while she doesn't enjoy automatic benefits from being "pretty and popular" still benefits from other standards such as being Caucasian or from a solid middle-class background. Jodi gets treated with possible racism in spite of the fact she was doing all of the work and talking, so she cuts the next loan officer at the pass and leads with what turned the last guy into a butt-kisser last time. Daria calls Jodi out on using nepotism when she seemed so offended by it last time, completely missing the fact Jodi hated being made to feel 'less-than' her partner, and Daria honestly being tone deaf that Jodi does not owe every white person the chance to prove they are not racist to her. I kind of like how during the end of the project, while it sounds like Daria might be making a snide remark about the fact Jodi's overpreparation and overachieving didn't actually get them the loan, she states it in a way that simply explains what it actually was, Jodi was willing to be pragmatic and do what she needed to do, rely on nepotism, to get what she wanted to avoid putting herself in an unpleasant position that frankly Daria doesn't grasp the full scope of.

Jodi's mom rightfully calls Helen out for using "that's impressive for a black person" as a compliment, especially when we as an audience know Helen would be just as upset if someone said the same thing about "Daria gets such good grades, she's very accomplished for a girl." When I saw this episode I was applauding Jodie for calling Daria out. I know this video is about how Daria approaches prejudice, but I knew Daria was taking her frustration with Jane out on Jodie. Daria was being disrespectful, so she needed a major reality check. And I agree; in world like this, you’ve got to do what you can to make things happen.

I'd argue that Daria and Jodie are reflections of one another, they both equally understand how flawed society is. while Daria chooses to work against the societal norms Jodie chose to embrace her "roll" so to speak. It's really interesting because from both girls' perspectives they've "given up" choosing to sacrifice a part of themselves, this is why they get along so well.

I think you did a good rundown of the episode with more modern eyes.. I watched the episode when it first came out, so my reactions are more of the time. But part of the point with Daria is that she's not perfect. Sometimes she's right and gets overlooked because she's a kid or a girl. But sometimes she's not. Jodi is a very interesting foil for Daria because she's smart, upbeat, and inclined to attempt conformity for survival, which she can't ever fully achieve because she's black in majority white spaces. Daria kind of has the white privilege to not conform. Or at least that's one way of looking at things. And I think the show tried its best to confront that privilege without using all the technical terms. It leaves the presumed white viewer with things to think about in terms of the sorts of people who conform, why they conform, and the freedom to just be yourself. I think if you're going to look at the Jodi and Daria dynamic, you should really check out the one where they're checking out colleges or private schools together. I can't remember which it was. But there's a lot of Jodi finding herself there, and the pressure of being black in white spaces. About how much she has to sacrifice of her personality to try to fit in and feels she can't do the things Daria does. Obviously, different black people would handle these situations differently, but I think she's a good character for expressing one viewpoint on white/black race relations, that I take to be authentic. Best wishes for your birthday.

@@alissajadyn You're welcome. :) I went looking , and the episode I was thinking of is called Gifted. I think these are the only two episodes where Jodie has a big role, though she appears in other stories. I also think I collapsed Gifted in my mind with the Daria movie Is it Fall Yet, where she struggles with her parents over them wanting her to attend a nationally prestigious school and she wants to go to an HBCU because she really wants to experience a place where she's a part of the default majority after feeling pressured to perform her whole life as a "model" minority. The F Word happens before the movie and explores the pressure Jodie's parents put on her in a C plot. And that seems to be about it for significant episodes for her character. Though in looking around, I found out MTV has been sitting on Jodie movie, apparently to be aimed at Gen Z. So maybe there'll be something more about her in the next year.

@@alissajadyn You're welcome again. And of course, do as you like, it's your show. and I'm not sure what kinds of things you want to focus on in general. I just showed up to comment on Daria content. And I'm happy to talk about '80s and '80s topics. :) II doubt I can provide any other useful feedback at the moment. I did relate to Jodie second most out of the cast as an academically gifted woman who was pressured by family and could never quite fit in, though my reasons were different than hers since I'm white. Daria, was, of course, what drew me to the series, but I'm not as much of a deliberate rebel. She did teach me how to let other people fall on their faces when they wouldn't listen.

Hearing you break down this episode brings back memories. I was a pretty sheltered white kid, even though we were in a lower income bracket, and my parents always taught that the solution to racism was "color blindness." It's been a long road maturing past that, and this episode was probably one of the first steps I took. It took a couple of watches to really click, but it's what taught me that there was more to blackness than skin and hair and popular slang. It was experiences that I was always being shielded from and would have to actively choose to understand.

Would like to also point out, if it hasn't already, that the first banker is probably exist, too: asking only for a dad to cosign.
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 2 ай бұрын
I feel like Daria IS pragmatic sometimes. Like, I feel like if Jodie had simply accepted the loan at the first bank, Daria would've likely had no problem with it. If Jodie would've then complained about the racism of the banker, how maybe they wouldn't have been able to get the loan, race-aside, because of their age, BUT that the way he treated Daria vs Jodie showed his racism... I think Daria probably would've agreed with her. I think it was Jodie saying she didn't want to get a loan that way, then going to the 2nd bank and doing exactly that, was what set Daria off. I don't know that it was Daria's principles to not get the loan that way, it was Daria reacting to Jodie contradicted herself that set Daria off.
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 2 ай бұрын
ALSO... I kinda hate that Daria frames it as "we got it because we were flexible". Like... sure, maybe it sucks, but what's wrong with admitting that using Jodie's rich father got them the loan? Sure, it sucks.. but that isn't throwing *Jodie* under the bus, is it? What's wrong with admitting that the system sucks, that we need to know the right person, have the right connections, that success isn't simply a product of hard work and preparation?
@fixedfunshow
@fixedfunshow Ай бұрын
@@SchulzEricT A little late but Jodie was tired of racism and just went directly with her alibi to get the loan instantly. Something she deems rare. Daria always wants people to stick to morals and she wanted Jodie to find a bank that would lend her the loan without throwing her off the bus, in fact, Daria says "stupid" so she sees it as morality not color or racism.

I've always suspected Daria is on the autism spectrum with her idiosyncrasies, inflexibility, and antisocial tendencies. I've always somewhat identified with her, flaws and all. This episode really put her through the ringer with the only other peers with whom she can engage on the same level. Jane is more open-minded and more willing to try new things, and Jodie is as brilliant as Daria but better socially adjusted. I see them as positive foils for Daria the way characters like Quinn and Li are the negatives.

Bro, Tom was truly the main villain of the whole series. He dated both Daria and Jane but Daria was the one who dumped Tom since they were losing interest and going different paths after high school. EDIT: The first bank, I understood Jodi's frustration; wasn't acknowledged until Jodie brought her dad and who he is. I would be too if people did not see me for my merits but then Jodi pulled a 180 on Daria with the second bank and immediately mentioned her dad; contradicting her previous statement. So yeah, Daria was right to call out Jodi when they got back to the house however, Daria didn't understand from Jodi's point of view because of her being a black girl (I'm white to white people but I'm mexican to mexicans, so I understand both side of the spectrum) BUT at the end, Jodi understood the assignment; she got the loan, which ultimately let Daria admit defeat. I was impress how they handle that argument because it could've been easily be a heated one.

Respectability Politics is a unique concept that is seldom spoken of in a neutral manner. Growing up and even now at 31 I leverage a very high IQ and an industrious mind. However, to say that the color of my skin is irrelevant, is actually not true. I am often what people "don't expect" when I open my mouth, and in Kansas, that proved very problematic for me, but I hold my ground and refuse to make myself appear less than what I am to make others comfortable. You mentioned you yourself do the same in standing your ground. Keep it up. Skin color should not be seen as a way to judge intellect. 😁👍

Your thesis was spot on. I loved that show when it was on and still do. It wasn't that I liked Daria as a person (I don't) she's more of a character study in why we still have racism. It demonstrates how people are fine turning a blind eye to horrible things as long as it doesn't affect them directly. I've never understood that mindset. Like how some still think they're not being affected when they are 🤷. Now some are starting to understand what we've been screaming about for years and that's a great thing because we're more alike than not. This episode broke down how getting a loan affected them. It taught them as well as some of us some harsh realities that some people face on a daily basis. That's what made that show so good, it didn't shy away from much needed topics of discussions. New subscriber, I hope your channel thrives.

I know Daria doesn’t know prejudice the way Jodie does, but for me, I think Daria thought Jodie was above that. That was a mistake on her part mostly BECAUSE Daria doesn’t seem to be aware of the racially politicized way many institutions practice. Hence, Daria wasn’t as sensitive to the comments and actions of the first bank rep. as Jodie. I think Daria was upset because she thought Jodie was EXACTLY like her. Jodie corrected her that “society” didn’t think the same.

Even in the smallest sense, how we dress, speak, and so on. Even saying “I mean, I signed up for paramount plus” lol I wouldn’t say I advise against respectability politics, rather I think it’s shitty that it’s something we have to engage in, however little it may be.
