@@jeffelmore5614 yeah im getting sick of being assaulted by junkies for walking off of my property and minding my own business it happens almost every time i leave my property on foot now, I dont walk my dogs anymore, or go to public parks, places like that, but hey they defunded the police over 50 percent in my town, I saw this coming. I spend the majority of my time at home now watching junkies from afar deface property in my community and hearing about all my local stores repeatedly getting robbed broke into vandalized ect. but im sure this was a better alternative to having a well funded police department. idk about everyone else but having an overfunded police force sounds like a good think to me but fml. my favorite part is the sob story homeless person literally every five feet everywhere making every excuse they can come up with for not working with their hands out and a meth pipe in their pocket, literally every business in my town is hiring and struggling to keep their businesses going because they are underemployed and over half the town is trying to live off of free handouts, can somebody please explain to me how we got here? I was homeless for five years myself after the housing bubble blew it was rough times so I understand the struggle, but whats going on right now is flat ridiculous.

It's not ACTUALLY supposed to be about defunding the police. The actual idea behind 'defund the police' wasn't just to yank cops out of America, it was SUPPOSED to be taking funds away from police and starting additional specialized services so that police aren't responding to (for example) mental health issues, where police will end up shooting a naked dude having a mental breakdown. What is happening in Seattle is not what defunding the police meant. You can't just do it instantly, it's the kind of thing that needs time. It suffers from a very unfortunate name and I would rather it just be called "Strategically reallocating taxpayer resources for efficiency and specialty".

I'm a Seattle native who left in the early 2000s. I lived in the CD. They had just started calling my neighborhood the Caucasian District due to all the rich, white hipsters buying up the old homes for nothing and renovating them. Then Starbucks came in. It was a sign of things to come. Change isn't always good. Now this mess. I have no plans to go back. All these drug addicted homeless and the BLM nonsense destroying Capitol Hill. Most black folks were being displaced back then and moving down to Federal Way and the southern suburbs so how many still live in Seattle unless Amazon brought them up? It can't be very diverse there, not that it ever was. It is odd that Seattle became the epicenter of BLM. Wrong demographic. They should protest the displacement of the long-time black residents due to gentrification, but that was decades ago now and those kids protesting weren't even alive. Sad. I remember it all.

@Tony Rubens there is plenty of room for reform. Budget AUDITing (i.e. why are they buying military equipment with surpluses), training reform (yes, this may raise their budgets), civilian/expert review boards for misconduct (internal investigations are comically worthless), some sort of insurance paid by police/unions to pay out for misconduct similar to healthcare professionals (i.e. why are tax payers liable for "bad apples"). Additionally, "reform" is going to take decades to play out, which is why we cannot just pull out the rug from the police via broad "defunding".

I think she was right about needing to shift many of the responsibilities away from police. We expect officers to be the magic bullet if we don't know what yo do with a social issue, it's not fair we do that. So in that aspect it is possible once other avenues have been figured out to handle those things are established. The problem is they are not, and there is no clear indication that we have to many police either, in terms of taking care of public safety. Pulling funding was incredibly irresponsible in a situation that no clear transition could be made. Of course it made everything worse.

It's time to reevaluate what money spent means when it comes to desired results. Throwing more money at things is not (usually) the solution. Figuring out how to maximize the benefit from our invested dollars makes more sense. 20% budget reduction seems entirely reasonable while still allowing for community oriented peace offers to do their jobs. @@KillerX1911 if it was sarcasm I didn't feel it and I'm the king of using it at the worse possible times. You are right about our politicians. We need to get rid of the idea that emails and phone calls do nothing. I can tell you if you can form an intelligent idea there staff will listen. If the idea is good or popular then it goes up the food chain. I had an issue with workers comp. I called my rep within an hr of talking to an intern my representative's assistant called me. We talked for over an hr and she said send us an email They would be happy to write a letter to the worker's comp board on my behalf. We can hold our politicians accountable at all times. We just don't do it in the numbers needed to institute change. Right now every couple of years for a couple of months they act on their best behavior feed us the lies we want to hear and move on. After the vote there right back to golfing with lobbyists. We can even hold them accountable for attendance in the house and senate. It's all public record whos there every day, what they vote o,n and if it was remotely or in person. Some of these people are hardly ever there. That's unacceptable, just like how they shouldn't have an option to go home without a stimulus bill. They also shouldn't be making extra money or need more funding to accomplish it. If they can't do their job properly in the allotted amount of time. Then well maybe we need someone that can. I've never seen jobs in the private sector that allows people to do so little yet still keep their jobs. If I live in dc id be putting a chain and lock on the doors of Congress. Tell them they have 24 hrs before I start sending in dying people so they can explain the hold up to them.

@@ladydragon7777 No, it was their job. Instead of sending police they send Social Workers to de escalate the situation however a lot of the calls on homeless are on people on drugs as Seattle as a bad drug epidemic amongst the homeless. The person was stabbed as they were sent to the scene as part of the job. And actually now no longer receive a police escort as they were defunded. The police do a lot of things wrong and get everyone upset, I’m disgusted by the videos that almost come out every month of racial profiling. However removing the police or trying to replace them with social workers, sees an increase in crime. When someone is sent to the scene you never know the intent or mental stability of the person that’s why a police officer has offensive training to prevent or yield less dangerous outcomes to themselves or perpetrator in case of an attack.

I think she was alluding to the old adage that goes something like, “A good compromise is when both parties are dissatisfied.” It encapsulates the idea that finding a solution all parties are satisfied with is extremely difficult in the real world, and, given her profession, I’d wager that it’s an idea she has seen become reality in her daily life. She seemed to me to be one of the more rational, competent, and realistic people in the video; certainly, more so than the interviewer.
