If he decided against showing her as a young child then he probably didn’t find the right child actors who could embody that role. We all want to see the story but it shouldn’t look ridiculous.

they are thousand years old beings trapped in kids bodies. Remember how shocked lady jessica got when leto spoke to her like her was the infant. Try to find a kid who can act that.@@quinncillian

@@mauriciokrebs2913 yeah, I've read Children of Dune, I just couldnt remember for sure exactly their age; but anyway, yeah, I mean that's quite an acting role. I just think there are plenty of verrry young actors who have put in some CRAZY mature performances (esp when it comes to the more horrific and strange, which are crucial for those roles)

I think choosing Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia is going to turn out being a genius decision. She has this weird look that can lend itself well to de-aging technology. I think she was specifically picked because of her facial features but it also helps that she's a brilliant actress.

Believe me. I want that too. I really wanted a full depiction of this character. If done right she might have even stolen the show (and I think that's one of the reasons why she's being adapted differently).

@@forrestpenrod2294 which still doesn't make sense, because DM takes place only 12 years after the end of Dune and Anya Taylor-Joy is almost as old as Timothy Chalamet in real life. I was wondering if they'd use Anya herself in maybe some of Paul's visions of the future

@@buckysrevenge They could stretch the timeline, make it a 20+ year gap between Dune and Dune: Messiah. FTL maybe instant but the Imperium is massive and dense, conquering dissident planets should take time. In fact a longer crusade could help explain the scale of atrocity. Spice keeps people looking younger and healthier so actors don't have to look much older. Definitely a problem i'm excited to see them solve.

She's probably going to appear in one of Paul's vision. Hell, maybe even Jessica's if they plan on keeping Alia in her womb for Part 2. All I know is Messiah is about to be fucking insane.

I'm pretty sure Alia is not going to be represented as born, instead the movie is not going to have a timeskip, showing Alia in Paul's prescient visions of the future as an adult. Alia herself is going to communicate with her mother through the womb.

They made normal sized males into hobbits in LOTR, and it's still holds up, even today. I think they can make Anya Taylor-Joy into todler easily.

I was thinking that Anya Taylor-Joy might have been cast to voice her or maybe even give some CGI reference in case. Her casting has been secret until the premiere this week, and that's the only role I could think she might have in the movie.

Sorry but she is needed, onscreen. Alia administers her comjaber to the Baron. She also tells the Emperor Muad Dep is, in Paul Atreides.

Exactly. It makes no sense. It's a needless change that only serves to take away from the story. Now I really wish that the original Dune books would've been adapted like A Song of Ice and Fire was to Game of Thrones.

I really hope that Alia is handled the same as the other versions. I'm sure the film will still be good, but some of you guys let Denis get away with almost anything unchallenged.

of course you can critize him, but he owns nothing to us. Book adaptations into movies are never gonna be the same and rightfully so.

I'll always try to reflect what the Dune community are thinking, saying and feeling about the Dune projects out there. They won't go unchallenged on my end. I have reserved a lot of my thoughts until Part Two is out to complete the full vision of the adaptation of the Dune book. Once it's out I can give a fully fair review of that adaptation.

Unchallenged? Let’s be real, nobody will influence the plans that Denis has already decided on for his adaptation. There’s an interesting chapter about just this in The Art of Dune, where he addresses why you cannot do a pure book to film adaptation without murdering the poetic soul of the story. And he’s absolutely correct. You’re along for the ride. Be grateful that one of the greatest directors of his generation is doing it, and that he’s also a massive Dune fan. Enjoy the films for what they are, and that they exist at all, rather than nitpick over things you’ll never change. Pointless.

@@happymaskedguy1943 Who said anything about influencing Denis? I was merely talking about criticism. Which I'm happy to see that some people (for example Dune News Net) gave a little pushback on that decision. You can clean it up anyway you like, removing such an important character from the story is completely unnecessary. This isn't some insignificant (LOTR Tom Bombadil) change. Sure, Denis makes a statement that excuses the changes he made. Surprise surprise. Lord of the Rings was a much bigger book, with many more characters. Yet Peter Jackson had enough respect for the source material to keep the important characters in his film. Pretty much unaltered. Child Alia's preborn nature creates an amazing dynamic in the story. As well as sets up a few story threads in the other books like all of the issues with adult Alia and Paul's children. Sorry to trigger you though..

I disagree! It's not that difficult to adapt the character of Alia as a child. It can be done quite easily with and without the use of CGI. Lynch and the miniseries did it without it, and since the VFX team of Dune is the same team that brought the character Rachel back to life in Blade Runner 2049 - flawlessly, I don't see how it would be problematic to do something similar with Alia. Her character has some of the best moments in the entire Dune saga. All they had to do was either hire a younger actress who can deliver a few lines convincingly, maybe do a little voice dubbing, or go full on CGI without showing too much. This was supposed to be a time of celebration, with only a few days before the release of the movie, but this news or hopefully just a rumour feels like a stab in the back. I'm very pragmatic when it comes to changes in book >> film adaptations but I would never accept something as drastic as this. If this is true than it is an abomination. A monumental mistake of epic proportions. Truly unforgivable!

Adaptations can be great even with changes from the books. LOTR trilogy has alot of missing scenes and changed things and still nobody could imagine a better adaptation. Some things just dont translate that well into movies or destroy the vision or coherence of the film. Book adaptations are not supposed to be the same as a book. If it was the other way around and movies came before books, the adaptation into the book would of course flesh out dialogue, scenes and charcaters even change some things, because all of those people are artists and have their own vision.

@@ungol9 You're absolutely right, and I totally get it. The changes made in part one didn't bother me that much but this is just way too extreme for my liking. Perhaps it is best to reserve my judgement until I've seen the film. Hopefully this negative feelings will go away.

Exactly. This change is way too much. I wonder if Denis just didn't want to have to deal with a child actor. Both versions of Dune had Alia, so I don't buy the excuses that people are using to defend this change. And if there is no time skip between part one and two, how are they truly going to show the growth of Paul realistically.

@@plo617 Yep, I'm not buying it either. It's like getting a diamond ring without the diamond. Rumour has it that there's a 9 month time jump a few scenes in, hence no toddler Alia, and not enough time to show the growth of Paul realistically.

no matter what denis chooses to do. child actors 'almost' are never able to portray characters in a believable manner/hype. Gotta be some dub voice acting going on for sure.

I haven't read them yet. I've read some of Sisterhood of Dune and the Duke of Caladan. They were ok. I miss the deep historical lore that Frank Herbert puts into the stories. Doesn't seem to be as much in the other books.

@@secretsofdune I've only read the two sequels and while the drop in quality and style is apparent and while some ideas might feel out of place, when I finished Sandworms of Dune I did get a sense of closure on the whole story that I didn't get from Chapterhouse. For that alone I'm glad I've read them.

Realistically it's impossible to adapt Alia exactly as she is in the books. It would be hard for a normal actor to do it justice, let alone a toddler.

Book Spoiler warning (even though you really shouldn't have clicked on this video if you haven't read it yet) From the character descriptions, it seems like we might not even have the time skip between Book 2 and 3 at all. It seems like Alia is going to be communicating with Alia through the Womb and giving her visions. She might even be the one to tell Jessica about her relation to the Baron, and then she will be the one to kill him instead.

i watched the dune part 1 IMAX re-run and stayed for the post-credits exclusive featuring the actors of dune part 2. eventually denis showed up and literally the latter half of his segment was just him talking about the goddamn worms lmao.

I find the number of people in the comments who think they know better how to adapt Dune than Villeneuve to be highly amusing. If half of you guys had a chance at adapting Dune into a film it would an absolute warcrime of a movie. Be a bit more humble, and a little less Dunning Kruger.

BUT SPOILER ALERT they didn't transtion the timeline at all, if Jessica concived during Part ONE and alia isn't born at all during part 2 they never really covered the Water of life correctly in my opinion but hey FRENCH MAN TRANSLATING ENGLISH BOOK what did you expect. I spit on the WB adaptation of dune because it is hollow basically WB be like "I know lets just SKIP Alia"
