Glad you feel the same way, too. Post-punk & Indie fan through and through. From the Buzzcocks, thru the Cure, Cult, Smiths onwards. But there’s something truly unique about the Gibbs. People can denigrate them if they don’t like 60s music or ‘disco’ - but any true musician (from top level teachers/ artists like Fil to the Foo Fighters & and just any serious act in any genre the past 50yrs) will appreciate the brothers’ writing, orchestration, open & harmony singing & musicianship. Utter class. Tragic 3 of them left us before their time, but damn what a legacy.

Not really well educated. Barry and Andy both dropped out of school at age 14, and the twins at 13. None were that studious when they were in school. Barry said he and his older sister would hide out until the bus passed and go back and tell their mother it didn’t come. One story had the 3 older boys jumping in bed to play sick when their father answered the door for a policeman or truant officer. Their mother said Andy would hide in the barn and come in with hay in his hair, pretending he had been at school. He was fronting a band in the clubs at age 13!!! He wasn’t even old enough to legally get paid. Music was all any of them ever wanted to do. Who needs an education?

Yes, Andy was indeed great and massively talented during a time when musicians played live. I didn't get to watch much of "Midnight Special" but I do remember when Andy hosted "Solid Gold." On one episode, he sang "Shadow Dancing." Though he didn't play guitar, he sang to a different pre-recorded backing track. The 12 or 13 year old me appreciated how he sounded and that he kept me engaged. Yes, I wish I could have watched more of his live performances when he both played and sang.

Barry doted on Andy and you can tell Barry guided Andy in his singing and playing. I'm sure Barry picked the musicians and made sure they complimented Andy in his performing and with background vocals. Not taking one thing from Andy as I loved his music from 1977 and his time on "Solid Gold." Andy was a great talent and was fortunate to have a loving brother like Barry helping him.

OMG, Fil, so glad I caught this! (love you so much, BTW!) I MET ANDY GIBB! It was probably about 5 years after this recording, I think 1982-ish. I had driven from VT with my sister and best friend to have a long weekend tearing it up in Toronto where we have family. We spent the afternoon at Toronto Island, taking the ferry over. During lunch, our waiter said to us, very sneakily, that Andy Gibb is having lunch here too!!! Over There!! As fate would have it, Andy was directly in front of us as we queued up for the return ferry, and the three of us spent the whole ferry trip back to Toronto talking to him. Damn, he was a cutie pie. I was shocked when he died several years later. I think he was the first "famous personage" that I ever met. Thanks for reviving an ancient memory!! Je t'adore! Take care!

I agree about the vocal similarities between Andy & Barry. I'm also pretty sure Barry sang backing vocals on the recorded version of this song as well as several other songs of Andy's that they wrote together. However, I feel like I'm able to sing along with Andy's falsetto easier than with Barry's. The one exception I've found is Andy's version of (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away toward the end of the song. Such a beautiful voice & amazingly talented! So sad that he was so troubled with handling his fame and even more so being compared to his older brothers. He never seemed to be able to find true joy in his life before it ended so tragically early. Kind of eerie to think I've already lived two years longer than he did. So thankful my mom influenced me with the Bee Gees & Andy's music when I was growing up. Favorite FAMILY of artists including many of the next generation of Gibb that I hope to see featured on here one day! 🤘

Interesting comment about “Our Love . . .” When I watch the 1997 live concert from Las Vegas and a video of Andy is incorporated, I wonder whether the falsetto is really sung by Andy or Barry. I’ve read that Barry dubbed for Andy when necessary, but certainly don’t want to assume the falsetto is not Andy. Most recently, listening closely, it does sound more like Andy. Good for your mom influencing you. I’ve tried getting my grandchildren interested. They all loved Robin’s “Juliet” and when I played “Stayin’ Alive,” they all immediately started singing along, then stopped, looked at me, and two of my grandsons at the same time, said, “Wait! THIS is The Bee Gees?” YES!
@TaraLyz

@@deniseward8003 I think Barry mostly dubbed on Andy's final studio album After Dark. The falsettos on his first two should actually be him, but Barry may have still provided some backing vocals on the songs he helped write on all three albums. All speculation on my part though. Would have to ask Barry himself to learn the absolute truth of the matter.

Others disagreed with that with unfavorable sayings like "Disco S**&s." As a performer, I think Andy and Barry were pretty much equal...maybe giving Andy the edge as he was more developed when he started than Barry at the same age...but then again, Barry didn't have brothers to watch growing up as mentors...where I think Barry was far above Andy, was songwriting...but then again, had Andy not had his personal issues, and had lived longer, he might have eventually equaled Barry there as well..

Dear Fil , I love your analysis! You are the most polite and friendly person on KZfaq. I also love your album you sent me once. I do a lot of sport after work. Few months ago I started new activity, running (now I am doing 10k). When I started running 5k, I was always listening to your album. It gave me the power and joy. Thank you so much. Once you organise your concert, let me know please. Cheers from London!

Always loved this song off the radio! Even though I grew up listening to him & the BGs on the radio, I really never appreciated them until KZfaq came along. I've found some more acoustic/live versions and realized wow, they really could SING! I think because they came around during the disco era, they weren't often taken seriously. But they were genuinely talented.

They (and ABBA) were my favorites back in the 70s. Then when the disco backlash happened, I became embarrassed to say I was a fan lol. I agree - thanks to KZfaq not only have I rediscovered my love for both bands, but have learned how incredibly talented they were.

I just wanted to add, in case you didn't know, the Bee Gees started in the mid-late 60's and had some hits way before the disco era. You should check out some of their first hits with Robin as lead singer: "I Started A Joke" (1968) and "Massachusetts". I think you will love them😊 Again, you may have already heard these, but if not I would love to hear what you think!

My favourite Andy Gibb song, but you can't escape that it was written by his older brother who he also sounds just like. A blessing, that may have felt like a curse, its such a shame, it feeds in to insecurity and substance abuse. Its hard x

Sir Barry Gibb always have said that Andy and himself was like twins and I have to agree. That Andy play guitar like Barry is kinda natural, it was Barry that bought Andy’s first guitar and teaching him to play 😊 Barry was very protective about Andy.

You're right; Andy was incredibly talented, like his brothers. They all had an innate sense of timing and pitch. I've always thought that (thanks to Barry's clever way of wrapping lyrics around music) this was quite a difficult song to breathe through, which makes his live performance all the more admirable. And he was only 19. So sad that a lack of confidence and drug abuse killed him in the end.

A truly incredible choice of artist to check out ... Andy is largely unknown member of the Gibb family because of the gargantuan success of the Bee Gees. There's a fantastic video here on KZfaq of Andy, Olivia Newton John and, Abba performing live together. This guy was the real deal and it's a terrible shame he left us so soon. Thanks Fil 💙👊🏼

Another gifted guy from the Gibb family and interesting similarity of those two voices. If you are curious, try a look to both versions of 'Morning of my Life', Barry's early version and the video on the beach from Andy, the slightly difference in their voices is astonishing. Great reaction thank you!!!!

The Gibb brothers definitely had the talent in their voices. If you would like to do one on Maurice, there are several live performances of "Man in the Middle" here on KZfaq that would be perfect for analysis. I suspect that even though Maurice's voice was definitely baritone vs. the tenor voices of his brothers, you will see his voice was just as accurate as theirs. I think it would be really neat for you to compare the different voices of other families as well. Some suggestions would the The Osmonds and The Jacksons. What would be unique with both of those families to the Gibb family, would be that those two families have sisters voices to add into the mix. For Donny, I would love to see an analysis of "Close Every Door".

Thank you for doing this. The brothers were very often ridiculed (I was a teenager in those days), and I welcome your acknowledgment of their talent. Barry Manilow was also in that category, as was John Denver. And may I say that there are a lot of people putting out videos proclaiming their "expertise"? Some are so transparently ignorant. But you? OMG, thank you for being authentic, REALLY loving music, and well...showing how music makes a difference. We need more of that!
