Bangladesh is a truly unique case in world politics. To this day, it is the only country that has broken away from another state without agreement and gone on to achieve full international recognition and UN membership. In this video, I explain how this unilateral secession occurred and how Bangladesh managed to gain global acceptance.
Welcome to Independent Thinking. A channel dedicated to international relations, independence disputes, secession and the origins of countries.
In 1947, India was partitioned, thereby leading to an independent Pakistan. However, the country was made up of two parts. As well as the main bulk of the country in the west, there was another, smaller part a thousand miles to the east. This was East Bengal, later renamed East Pakistan. However, the relationship between the two parts of Pakistan was difficult. On 26 March 1971, East Pakistan broke away and formed a new country: Bangladesh. Despite the international community's strong aversion to unilateral secession, this new state was quickly recognised by most of the world. Indeed, it remains by far the most successful case of unilateral secession in modern international politics. As this video shows, this came about due to a particular convergence of factors. However, as it also shows, Bangladesh's path to full United Nations membership only came about after Pakistan had bowed to the inevitable and recognised its former province's independence.
