Britain will permanently leave the EU on January 1 2021, four years after the disputed referendum. It is only now that many Brexit voters are discovering that they have been abused for the political elite's power games. The campaign team of the advocates of brexit won the referendum with loud and clear lies and a cunning use of algorithms. Brexit is not going to bring the supporters what they hoped for, quite the contrary. But, as always, repentance comes too late.
This video is part of an episode of 'In Europe, history caught in the act' with Geert Mak by Stefanie de Brouwer and Roel van Broekhoven. The following people were interviewed: film and script writer James Graham ('Brexit: The Uncivil War'), writer Guy Matthews and Emma Knuckey.

I watch many things on KZfaq, this another great piece & perfectly sums up the mind set of many who voted leave. We all now can see it for what it was, an opportunity for the rich & powerful to push back against many of the changes that the EU was supporting, changes that are for the common good, better protections for workers, protecting employment law. Greater protection from companies moving earnings to avoid tax !

This is another one-sided opinion about Brexit by a remoaner... another big whinge and as such it is meaningless in finding out what was promised and what has materialised... starting with the fact that Bexit has still not been delivered thanks to remoaners wirking behind the scenes to keep Britain locked in to Brussels control. As for the supposed promises not met... well actually the NHS has now received more money and Brussels gets less... so that whinge is false. It is also the case that trade with the EU is back up to pre-covid levels despite the EU doing everything to undermine Britain's position. But the truth is... Britain could do so much better if a proper Brexit had been pursued.

It's vital that the real reason why the UK held a referendum on EU membership in June 2016 is properly understood and more widely disseminated. For those who believe the Brexit plebiscite was some kind of democratic event, ie. giving the British people a say in this vital matter, I can only say; "dream on" - you couldn't be further from the truth - the REAL reason was naked electoral calculus! In 2005 UKIP polled approx. 2 - 3% in National voting intentions - under First Past the Post [FPTP] this relatively small vote share was annoying but completely ignorable - UKIP would effectively win zero seats in a UK General Election with this vote share spread across the UK. However, over the next ten year period, the UKIP insurgency relentlessly burgeoned to the point where they were registering more like 13 - 14% of National voting intention by 2015. This significantly increased support for UKIP represented an existential threat to Conservative Party electoral prospects - why - because under FPTP this perceived hemorrhaging of core Conservative support meant Labour could win a UK General Election WITHOUT having to increase their National vote share - the split in the Tory voting bloc across a swathe of formerly safe Tory seats would let Labour in via the back door in these local contests! Conservative Party strategists therefore had to devise an effective counter to this very real electoral threat. This cold, hard electoral reality explains why David Cameron arrived at his cunning plan to offer perceived defectors from the core Conservative voting bloc a one off chance to realise what potential UKIP supporters most wanted - an opportunity to hold an IN/OUT referendum on EU membership. Of course, we now know that Cameron's strategy worked - across a significant number of key marginal constituencies where the UKIP threat to incumbent Tory MPs was strong, results in the these local contests demonstrated that enough potential UKIP voters switched their allegiance back to the Conservative candidate during the 2015 General Election, in the process providing Cameron with a very narrow 12 seat House of Commons [HoC] majority - most polls in the run-up period to election day had predicted Labour finishing with the largest number of MPs but short of an overall majority, therefore requiring some form of cooperation with other parties, chief among them the SNP - hence the Conservative election strapline "Coalition of Chaos" used during the campaign period, showing a smiling Alex Salmond with a minature Ed Miliband (Labour leader at the time) in his suit pocket. Closer analysis of key marginal constituency results reveals just how close run the 2015 General Election was. Across the seven most keenly contested constituencies where Labour finished runner up but the Conservative candidate became MP, the total winning margin for all seven seats combined was less than two thousand votes - it should be noted that in all of these seven seats the UKIP candidate recorded a relatively strong third place. It is not unreasonable to infer that just a few thousand citizens in these key marginal constituency contests changed their minds whilst actually in the polling booth on election day; 7th May 2015, switching from UKIP to Conservative because they were convinced that they would have a once in a lifetime opportunity to vote in a referendum on the UK exiting from the EU With his very narrow (12 seats) HoC majority secured, David Cameron was obliged to make good on his pledge to hold the promised IN/OUT EU referendum, which took place on 23rd June 2016 - the rest of this sad tale, as we know all too well to our cost, is history!

As a "Yank" here on the other side of the Pond ( on the other side of the Continent of that Pond ), many of us thought BREXIT was the most idiotic thing we could have imagined from an economic, social, and cultural level, ...and then WE elected TRUMP. What is fascinating is that if you substituted the word BREXIT for the term TRUMP in this entire discussion, the graphs, numbers, suppositions, and projections would almost be identical. There is a profound transformation in the industrialized nations going on about what the term WORK means. The redefinition of what jobs are, who is employed, how much they earn, and who gets those jobs is going in the US, UK, GERMANY, and other countries, there is a profound redefinition of what it means to be an American, a German, a Frenchman, and an Englishman. The ever increasing change brought about by the influx if immigration from every corner of the world, disturbs, frightens, and angers many who were already disenfranchised. The changes to their homes, towns, cities, and this redefinition of incomes and types of work is leaving some individuals behind economically and socially, and others are wealthier and more secure, it has created a vast separation between the HAVES and HAVE NOTS and that does not appear to be diminishing. For those who feel the crush of this change, for those who see their lives, homes, jobs and the lives of their children diminish, then BREXIT and TRUMP become a life preserver that they swim towards in hope. BREXIT is TRUMP, and TRUMP is BREXIT.

Im Brazilian. At frist i was mostly confused about why the brexit would happen. The more i saw into it, the more complex i realized the subject was and IS. I realize this vídeo has an odd bias. Very on the nose, actually. But here IS the deal... I believe that most people outside the brexit deal would be puzzled on how to approach It due to so many cultural, historic and socio economic factors playing in. What i can say It is a very interesting case study of nationalism versus patriotism (in portuguese these are different. Maybe in english too). So many important historical and world defining events happened due to english intervention (for bad or good or however we feel about It) It makes Sense its also about identity. However... A Very similar thing could be said about germany, for instance. From an outside perspective, and for whatever its worth, It looks like Europe IS "too small" for so much unsolved problems, to put It lightly.

Brexit could have been avoided in one of three ways: 1. If Edward Heath had come clean about the intent of the European problem, we would never have entered the EEC in the first place. 2. If John Major had given the British people a choice on Maastricht, it would have been overwhelmingly negative and we could have stayed in a trade relationship (popular) without going down the road to European Federalisation (unpopular) or 3. If the British people had never been given a referendum. Which of these three options would remainers have wanted?
@reddragon3163
@reddragon3163 Жыл бұрын
Option 3. The vote should've been given to elected officials, each indicating clearly what they would vote (leave or remain) during the 2015 elections. People vote for the individuals that represent their point. MPs understand the EU better than ordinary people and are less susceptible to manipulation (bribery is another matter). There's a reason why the most googled question was 'what's the EU? What is the EU referendum?'

@@michaelsteane9926 wow I could do an hour long video on this. What do you mean "opposed brexit"? Tories and Labour were split for and remain brexit and many of the smaller parties were full brexiters or hardcore remainers (DUP vs Lib Dem). The main issue post ref was MPs couldn't agree on how do exit, which was the questions biggest flaw. Remain was unambiguous, MAINTAIN STATUS QUO. Leave was too ambiguous, leave then WHAT? Leave with no deal, leave with [insert country] (plus/plus plus) style deal. Mr Brexit himself touted a different deal everytime he was on TV. Which outcome were MPs meant to choose especially when a lot of them thought brexit was horrendous no matter which way you went. To improve the question it should have went either: Ref 1. What do you want - remain, leave without deal, leave with a deal (insert different deals) Ref 2. A. Remain or leave B. If we leave, how? - no deal, deal 1, deal 2, deal 3, etc. There lies another issue, for a voter to be informed they would need to understand the various types of deals and then pick one (which would also split leave voters with ref 1). This would be extremely confusing to the average voter, especially ref 2. Questions are usually designed that even a 10 yo could understand them. Which returns everything full circle to my 1st comment - option 3, MPs who understand the EU a lot better should have decided the vote. They could've gone with ref option 2 and not split their vote too.

To force the people in one state and dismatle their local identities and histories (form of authoritarian centralism a la USSR) or be dissolved. Mind, VPRO is using _Brexit: The Uncivil War_ as a facts-based template for its documentary here. _Brexit_ is a work of fiction, and, like all works of fiction, incorporates elements of unreality, to varying degrees. Craig Oliver was a consultant for the telefilm and he can hardly be called unbiased. He campaigned for Remain, so Remain's campaign, and Oliver himself (who is shown being a good dad, making fish fingers for his daughter and her friends, for example), are presented in a generous light. The murder of Jo Cox, rather than being the act of a literally crazy person, are presented as being a consequence of the inflammatory extremism pushed by the Brexit Campaign. Oliver's character gives voice to concerns about further divisions springing up on account of Brexit. Well, Big Questions tend to produce strong reactions, but the only sociopolitical eruptions subsequent to the Brexit vote were 1) the political and media class' attempted sabotage of the act of Brexiting 2) the Black Lives Matter vandals and criminals and deracinated barbarians (and racists) and 3) Extinction Rebellion and 4) the COVID cock-up. If the enemies of Brexit are put in the blame, then, sure, "Brexit caused problems." Really, Brexit has still not reached completion because Parliament (via members from all the parties at Westminster) has failed to enact the People's Will. The ECHR still presumes to hold authority in Britain and the EU is still trying to have a trade bloc in the whole of Ireland. The ECHR could be rejected tomorrow and the UK could play chicken with the EU, embargoing the Republic until its, Britain's, demands were met. Alternately, the UK could realise that the EU is determined to not allow it to make a success of Brexit, so it could just sue for WTO terms of free trade.

Pro-Euro tosh. Most people barely remember the leave campaign. Both campaigns were hastily organised and at the time were criticised for being lacklustre and weak. People didn't vote to leave because of Boris' bus, they voted for the gradual but incessant change to Britain, particularly since 2003 when the floodgates were opened to unskilled immigrants. There has been a noticeable increase in pressure on transport infrastructure, house prices, degradation of the education system, pressure on the NHS, increased competition within the job market, and an erosion of British social value. People never liked the idea of losing their sovereignty to Brussels (and eventually Germany). Britain's involvement in the original EEC was purely about trade and nothing else; that slowly metamorphosed in to being ruled over. Remoaners continually paint people who voted Brexit as thick, crosseyed poors from the north with a cross to bear, which is utter London intelligentsia nonsense. Yet you seldom hear about the 40% in London that voted to leave.

And tell me what is happening without those unskilled immigrants now ? Hospitals are in shit state , Farmers can't harvest crops because those immigrant workers are no longer available and the English think such work is beneath them. Transport infrastructure is the preserve of Westminster NOT Brussels. House prices are out of control because people are greedy and because Thatcher sold off all council housing and failed to re-invest the revenue from that into replacing the housing stock . This drove renters into the arms of her Rich landlord cronies who then charged obscene rents for shithole properties. Not sure how EU affected education The education system in Germany where I lived for 30 yrs and sent my son to school was extremely efficient . So I guess the problem must lie with UK Government eh ? British social values ? What are they exactly ? A King who is an adulterer , his consort also. A prince who is a paedophile . A PM who lied to not only the public on numerous occasions BUT TO HIS MONARCH !! As to being ruled over by Europeans YOUR Royal Family was German Saxe Coburg only changed their name to Windsor during WW1 . Her Husband was GREEK . Politicians who covered up for Paedophiles like Saville one PM supposedly "lost " documentary evidence on that scandal. British social values ?? In your own vernacular You're 'avin a larf !!

France, Ireland, and the Netherlands voted "No" to the Lisbon Treaty. France and the Netherlands' wills were ignored. Ireland was bribed into re-voting "Yes." The Brexit Referendum is the last meaningful vote that will ever be held - anywhere - about the nature of the European Union until the wretched organization implodes. The EU conforms to German monetary, financial, banking, trade, and industrial policy. The EU conforms to French agricultural and foreign policy (more or less, in the latter case), and its civil service is stuffed with French-style _fonctionnaires._ Eastern Europe gets subsidy and free movement from membership in the EU. What does Southern Europe get? What does Western Europe get? Ireland likes the EU (it is the most pro-EU country within the EU) because it psychologically needs to differentiate and dissociate itself from the United Kingdom, previously the European Union's Awkward Child. But why does the Netherlands, for example, want to be part of a Franco-German condominium and submit itself to an undemocratic supranational superstate posing as an economic bloc within the most economically stagnant continent? I realize that the Netherlands is _in_ Europe, but there has never been a period in human history when geographical proximity has mattered less for the potential of trade.

Outside the university towns and metropolitan London the elites and multinational companies were all in favour of remaining as the were loving the low cost labour and free movement of people and money . The working class were ignored and exploited particularly in North and midlands of UK . The facts that the elites were in favour of Europe as the EU was of huge benefit to them however to the low paid and unemployed was looked at as a price worth paying for the Elites . With the immigrants it became a race to the bottom for wages and jobs . Working people and the growing numbers of the middle class are resentful towards unelected members of the EU . The EU showed exactly their stance against working people in Greece when the crippled the Greek economy, stopping payments at ATM , making loans to Greece then relaying the German banks who made the loans to Greece first of all leaving the Greeks still in a financial mess . A look at Spain Hungary Austria Portugal Greece Poland Slovenia the rates of high employment particularly with young people it’s a mess .
