SAME. I watched it with my niece and was so confused. I’ve had to have several brain surgeries(from other health issues lol), I have a feeding tube and many scary health issues.. and I’ve never gotten that sort of response from telling those close to me lol. When they found out I was autistic, they were like, “oh wow yeah that makes sense!”😂 not in a rude way, I was told I was bipolar all my life until the right drs took the time to diagnose me the correct way. It made so much more sense than being bipolar! I just don’t get their reactions. It’s wild.

I’m pretty sure he was only in college for the last season. He was 16-17 in Season 1 and Season 2. But yes I do agree their relationship was inappropriate, and for the most part, very one-sided on Maya’s part until Ski lodge. And that storyline is a whole other MESS

@@tacobell1299 originally that’s what I thought too and to add on, it was also meant to teach that Maya’s type of infatuation and dynamic with Josh was nothing of depth or “real love”, and that it was just a silly little fairytale crush she had on Josh and how it would be unrealistic, at least during both of their lives at that time. But the Ski Lodge episodes really went backwards and regressed that whole storyline and Maya’s growth as a character SO BAD. So in the ski lodge episodes, Josh, who BARELY showed Maya any interest before Ski lodge, finally returned back to the show (after basically being absent for all of Season 2, he only appeared in 1 episodes out of 30, and only a appeared in a few in Season 1). I do vividly remember the actor who played Josh getting into a motorcycle accident around 2015, which is why he wasn’t there during the bulk of filming Season 2, but STILL, his character just wasn’t around and was never even mentioned during a lot of Maya’s “self-identity” storyline, as well as the love triangle mess.

@@tacobell1299 But then he came in and ACTED like he knew everything that was going in and tried to play Maya’s psychotherapist? Like whaaat? 😂 Dude barely appeared in the show and when he was there, he always rejected Maya, saying that she was too young for him. Now all of a sudden he cared and knows more than everyone else? That’s just terrible writing. And then Josh really tried to manipulate Maya into thinking that she “became” Riley, which is how she developed feelings for Lucas, because she turned into Riley and developed Riley’s feelings for Lucas, even though she was still teasing Lucas and calling him nicknames in the ski lodge episodes, which is something she always did to him and that Riley NEVER did. So where’s the “self-identity” crisis everyone claimed Maya has?? Her improving her life, wearing better clothes and getting good grades = becoming like Riley? Okay Girl meets world logic.. 🤦‍♂️ I’m done ranting lol

Riley made a mark on my personality and mental health for years and she taught me “to be happy constantly and sadness is bad” the toxic positivity really did a number on me too😭 I had to reconstruct myself because of the chokehold she had on me

fun fact, i didnt know what autism was the first time i watched girl meets world. i genuinely thought it was like a deadly illness or something. now i'm diagnosed with autism so thanks girl meets world for introducing me to autism and also telling me its a horrible thing. i really appreciate that. so much.

I mean it can be awful to have. This episode really exaggerates it, but autism can be really frustrating and annoying to have. I have a nephew that has meltdowns because he can’t verbalize what he wants. Thankfully he’s learned to talk more, but it still gets on his nerves. In my opinion and own experience, people who actually have it really hate it

@@LacieAnimations Are you.. telling an autistic person that their criticism of the portrayal of characters reacting to hearing their friend might have autism is invalid because people who are autistic don't like having autism? Genuine question, because that's what this reads like. You're not incorrect, people who have anxiety don't enjoy having it either, but that doesn't mean we should be treated like we're inhuman and being diagnosed with cancer. And neither should people with autism. (Which it's very likely I do have, I've just chosen not to get diagnosed because of the literal laws taking away our bodily autonomy, but keep talking about something you don't have like you understand our point of view and issues with how we're treated.)

@@StoneBasiliskI think what they meant was that sometimes it is hard to be autistic because of the challenges we face, but they didn't word it well for sure. I agree with it to an extent. I have pretty bad sensory issues and if I don't wear earplugs I get migraines and I could do without that. Or without the auditory processing issues. But what they did in the show was horrible in every way for sure.

Honestly, I don’t remember this episode (maybe because I hated the show), but as a Christian myself, we know that people are gonna believe what they want, and that it’s *their* choice. Sure, we can tell them about the gospel, but if they don’t want it, then that’s them. We as humans don’t have the power to condemn people to hell based off of what we believe. (And even as a writer, where was it indicated that any of these characters have some sort of religious affiliation even besides Christianity???)

@@shostysbooI’m glad you feel that way, but don’t indicate other Christians into your statements, saying “we know” this and that. Because as someone who was raised atheist, I promise you, most Christians don’t seem to know that and don’t care to. The Christian who chooses not to condemn others, even silently, for their differing philosophies (even within Christianity itself) is unfortunately an outlier. It’s not inherently the fault of Christianity itself, it’s the institutionalization of the church and it’s historical weaponization as a tool of sociopolitical power

As an autistic person, I was so confused watching that episode, because I was just like “what do you mean he’s not autistic?????? He is literally me????”. Also, like, bitch???? I know what love is??? Like, sure, I’m aroace, but that has nothing to do with autism, and I have great friendships! And why were his “friends” so devastated at the mere IDEA of Farkle being autistic??? Like, my friends joke about about more than me, and that’s saying something? It’s not that bad????? It’s not the end of the world????

BMW focused on addressing real life themes and things kids went through in a neutral and subtle way so their audience could relate to it and reflect about it and get to the message by themselves, but GMW lacked both neutrality and subtlety because they were more interested in spoon-feeding their message to the audience as if we were too dumb to get it by ourselves and so we would get the exact conclusion they wanted us to get

I have a Bachelors of Science in Psychology with a minor in Adolescents, Community, and Education. This show's teachings are so inaccurate and harmful. The autism part was crazy. I work with Autistic children.. how dare they imply they aren't capable of love LMAO. NO WAY IT GOT AN AWARD FOR THE GOOD WRITING I AM DEAD. I agree with you 100%. Instantly subscribed. that's the point. they didn't have a relationship when they met when maya was in middle school and josh was in high school. (yes he was in hs when he first appeared). all they did was say if its meant to be in the future, then it'll be meant to be. its very innocent and people trying to say its something its not, is not it.

@@Hannas- the problem is that it’s a show meant to spread messages for children, yes they say they can’t date, but they will “play the waiting game” as if it’s sweet and not creepy (they’re just waiting until it’s legal), the writing says Maya shouldn’t get over Josh and move on it says that she should take her feelings seriously and keep investing on Josh because eventually he will realize they are meant to be together, Maya and Josh would be okay in another sort of show because not everything have to set an example but they did, not all guys Josh’s age his age would act the same way he did (so sensible and respectful to her) with a girl like Maya hitting on him the way she did (stalked him, got way too close to him, tried to impress him, etc), their relationship spreads a really bad and almost dangerous message for kids. Also it’s not very fair to say people make too much of a big deal about their age gap because the show itself presented it as a big deal from the start

@@Hannas- its normalizing college-age people pursuing middle school/hs age kids…. doing the “ill wait for you” thing is icky and teaches kids that it’s normal for people that old to be attracted to people that young. There is absolutely nothing you could have romantically in common as a college freshman with a highschool freshman. They’re in completely different stages of life and keeping a platonic relationship with the intention of starting a romantic one as soon as they pop 18 is predatory and honestly leaning into grooming territory.

Then I went to live studio audience taping of the show and executive producer Michael Jacobs ranted to the audience about how meaningful the show is. I'm a Christian and I think that the atheism epsidoe was very poorly done. 1) The way it started was stupid. All of that over a 5-dollar bill 2) You shouldn't try to force your beliefs on others 3) They should have been more unbiased. It would have been much better if the characters said we don't know everything that is out in the universe so who knows. 4) A teacher doing all this at a public school would get in trouble

UGH SAME! That episode was soooo gross and tbh the argument they used to “prove god exists” was not a even very convincing! Also if they wanted to do an episode about religion they could realize that Christianity is not the only religion?? There’s other Abrahamic religions like Judaism and Islam or even more diverse religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.! Ugh but it would take more than five seconds for a writer and I think of that 🙄

I forget what episode it was, but I remember in season one, they made jokes about Farkle's parents constantly fighting. Like, Jennifer always throwing her wedding ring at Minkus. The autism episode was a mess. And everyone just being okay with Josh/Maya was so weird and uncomfortable.

I've always had it in headcanon that Boy Meets World was the real world but from Corey's point of view, Girl Meets World isn't actually real, it's all in Corey's head. It's why Jack never really interacts with Shawn in the reboot (his brother) because Corey wants to be Shawn's brother. It's why there's one person of colour in Riley's friend group (even though she lives in New York), and it's why Shawn doesn't get together with Angela, he gets married to Riley's best friend's mom. Riley has the friend group that Corey always wanted, can stand on desks and be weird and goofy (everything Corey couldn't do as a kid). It's all Corey's ideal world because it doesn't exist.

Not only that, when you think about it, Maya was never allowed to be happy. Her dad takes off, but unlike Chet, he doesn't come back. She's constantly viewed as the bad influence when Riley was really the rebellious one tbh, and she falls for a guy (who arguably liked her better), but convinces herself he likes her best friend better. The O.G. sitcom cut Shawn a break every now and then, but Girl meets World wouldn't lay Maya have anything.

The commonly held belief from super fans is that the show was canceled bc one of the producers found out that Sabrina and Corey (both minors) had some sort of sexual relationship going on. One of the producers had been trying to get Sabrina to sleep with him since day one and when he found this out she was newly 18. He told her something along the lines of if she didn’t sleep with him he would cancel the show and she told him to quote “fuck off”. He canceled the show and threatened to black list both Corey and Sabrina from the industry but Sabrina threatened him with lawsuits about harassment so he backed off but black listed Corey. This is also y it is believed Corey hasn’t gotten as much work despite being a great actor. This mainly comes from old blind items and fan speculation. I have to say given Sabrina and Corey’s closeness it makes sense and Sofia Carson had talked in the past abt an underage costar (allegedly Sabrina) having to audition for a Disney project (adventures in babysitting) in a bikini. This is all speculation and the only thing we have ever gotten from Sabrina on this subject is when she alludes to gmw being a bad time.

@@Hannas- the problem is that it’s a show meant to spread messages for children, yes they say they can’t date, but they will “play the waiting game” as if it’s sweet and not creepy (they’re just waiting until it’s legal), the writing says Maya shouldn’t get over Josh and move on it says that she should take her feelings seriously and keep investing on Josh because eventually he will realize they are meant to be together, Maya and Josh would be okay in another sort of show because not everything have to set an example but they did, not all guys Josh’s age his age would act the same way he did (so sensible and respectful to her) with a girl like Maya hitting on him the way she did (stalked him, got way too close to him, tried to impress him, etc), their relationship spreads a really bad and almost dangerous message for kids. Also it’s not very fair to say people make too much of a big deal about their age gap (which by the way is 3 years) because the show itself presented it as a big deal from the start

Unfortunately live action shows can be produced on a shoestring budget whereas animated shows need an incredible amount of money, time, and manpower to produce. Many channels that used to be exclusively animation powerhouses are now crammed full with these dull, poorly written teen sitcoms. Nickelodeon being the main example. Cartoon Network tried and had an identity crisis in the early 2010’s, but they canned that quickly considering cartoon is literally a part of their name.

An interesting fact about the show is that the plot was changed. Originally, Cory was going to have three kids, like Boy meets world. Riley was going to be the middle sister, but somewhere along the way, for reasons that I don't know, the character of the older brother was cut out. 33:25 - In the show, Josh is 17 and Maya is 14. It's still weird. Also, the actor used to butt heads with Rowan Blanchard. He was an antifeminist. He was a 2012's Disney version of Andrew Tate.

16:32 Personal politics and religion are a big taboo in public school. Depending on where they live Corey could get in SO much effing trouble for harassing Farkle about his Atheism. When I was 12 I had a teacher who was planning a "field trip" to go to a political protest during school hours - for privacy reasons I won't say where or what the cause was but it wasn't exactly a safe place to bring kids. I went home and told my mom about it. The teacher didn't give us permission slips. My mom called the school with questions and the office lady was like "ABSOLUTELY NOT - we didn't know about this, we've actually denied her request for this trip several times." Regardless of if you agree with a teacher's belief or not it's really not their place to try to involve you beyond sharing educational information.

I loved Boy Meets World and wanted this show to be good so bad. I did love seeing some familiar faces, but it didn’t have the wisdom and charm of the original. They actually tackled real issues with some nuance and grace. Mr. Feeny was actually a great teacher and weaved real life lessons into actual education vs whatever Cory did. Just a shame they watered down the show into whatever this was. It was not only cheesy, but terrible takes on everything.

Inthink it was one that Disney blocked because it "glorified" drinking, but it stuck with me as a great warning and a great look at grief. Now it has been so long I sometimes wonder if I made it up.

adding to everything you said - not only was there the communism episode, but the money episode with mark cuban was like oh yeah capitalism good guys - the belief episode was insane tome, likei'm not opposed to you doing an episode to teachkids about different religions, or to respect each other's beliefs even if they are different, but this wasn't how they framed this one, i was like why is everyone forcing their beliefs onto everyone else like what? insane. - i mean the autism episode is by far the guiltiest one for sure. at least they still had smackle be a main character after, so that's something, but i can't imagine what it would've been like to be autistic and watch that episode like wow. - as a kid watching, of course i was shipping joshand maya, bc i too was crushing on an older guy, and was like of course they shoudlbe together, but why would anyone entertain this? i remember the writers always trying to skirt around it and fans putting pressure on them on twitter, but then the writers gave in and did the whole someday thing like whatdo you mean? you are the adult you shouldn't even entertain this??? it should've been done in s1, treated like any other crush and moving on, giving maya other things. still insane to me that it was a thing at all. - besides all that stuff,they were also just bad at writing some stuff, like the whole no one allowing maya to grow thing was crazy, but also, lucas, an original member of the core 4, was barely a character, he never got a storyline, he was just a cardboard standing there, and it was so frustrating to me, because why would you have a character w so much backstory and simply not use him. same thing for zay, not to mention he was the only black character, he was just there for laughs. i thought maybe there was potential in s3 for him and farkle to have a friendship that was like different than the one with lucas, they seemed like hey were gonna bond after the farkle finds out he is jewish episode, but no, nothing ever happened,so disappointing that show was a whole mess, but it's still my comfort show, i know if i need to pick myself up i can put on a few specific episodes and turn off my brain

Whenever it came to triangle stuff, why does each girl like him, it was always the two-three same characteristics/scenes he had, like it was never about him it was just the idea of him. and i liked that sometimes they showed that maya was attracted to him when he was exhibiting the bad boy traits, it made sense for her character, if they had done something about that then maybe it would’ve had a point but it really just felt useless and repetitive

I was way past the age of watching Disney but I stuck around for girl meets world because I had watched boy meet world. I wanted to see how it went and then really just stuck around once I became a fan of Sabrina’s. If it hadn’t been for those reasons I definitely would’ve abandoned the show. It was just bad. Felt very childish compared to the past disney shows, which I still rewatch till this day without feeling as if I’m being talked down to, which when I witnessed the episode where most of the characters convinced Josh to wait for Maya, I was shaking my head thinking about the poor kids who thought this was romantic. Glad it never got a fourth season cause people were begging for it at the time

Yeah faith in God was brought up, but it wasn't about converting Shawn. It was about having faith in something real, which for Shawn was the real relationships around him, not some cult that offered nothing of substance. They did use God to represent general hope and faith back then and so yes he prayed to show he had learned, but I still feel it was much better handled.

I used to love watching this show with my sister when I was younger and I do NOT remember any of this stuff, it's wild. I've high function and can confirm I do in fact love; and on another note it's crazy how much I used to love this show with how I'm exactly the opposite of the lessons mentioned in those episodes (atheism, i.e. christianity good believe in god ((i'm very not christian)) and bad autism representation stuffs ticks me off a lot so I just find it very interesting how I ended up liking the show so much. Maybe being very young little boy I was just clueless or something who knows. Great video, very entertaining.

the reason behind the communism episode is so obvious. they could never have a meaningful critical analysis of communism and the soviet union by extent in this show, because it's aimed at kids and kids are too young to learn about the mass deaths that took place, the enforcement of the russian language and culture and the actual economic issues in communism. so instead, the episode became an "long live amuricah" speech on how the US is so great and the evil red are downers bc they don't promote individuality and choosing your own path, or whatever. because obviously, america is such a great country for choosing your own path and becoming successful (sarcasm).

I found out about this today. I never watched Girl Meets World. And I’m GLAD I didn’t. I’m an autistic gal and… it SICKENS me with how they fucking treated autistic people. That HURT me in a way I didn’t even know possible. It’s absolutely vile. I’m an artist, an actress, my autism is high functioning, but still… I’m JUST as human as everyone else. That makes the short film that I did that I know is coming out covering this even more important… because I have NEVER seen me in media. A gal with autism that isn’t portrayed as a stereotype. Someone who’s not treated as nothing more than a plot device or a hindrance to the main cast… I want that to change. And I hope it does.

I'm glad I grew up without cable seeing everything about Girl Meets World in retrospect. I watched a few episodes at my grandmother's appartment but I wasn't into it like I was into Dog With a Blog or KC Undercover which I put the effort in to watch on KZfaq. I know those 2 shows probably haven't aged well but at least I can say they were made for entertainment first and foremost, rather than being vailed as an educational show with false messages about politics (of course a Disney sized corporation says "communism bad" because they're a beneficiary of capitalism) and religion that a giant corporation would want (as a Pagan I really don't like the "athiesm" episode, framing it as either athiesm or the god of Abraham and nothing else). The one comment I'll make about your analysis: you said the characters "are not rich and/or famous like other Disney shows", while maybe not as much as other Disney shows (even though I enjoyed Dog with a Blog I can't not ding it for being one of the worst on that. A Pascedena Mansion? Really? Can the senario of a talking dog in a world that otherwise has no fantacy elements not be made funny at any income level? Do they think the senario wouldn't work in the projects? But knowing Disney they'd probably put some problematic elements to it), they live in a decent NYC appartment. They're millionares at least

I remember being in the youtube comment trenches fighting for Maya and Josh because I thought it was so sweet that Josh knew Maya liked her, but asked her to wait till they're both older, but that he'd still be there for her and whatever she decided to do he'd be fine with.
