Ahh yes! I’m so sad I deliberated on bookshark level a science for so long because we’re a few weeks in and love it! We do it family style with my K and 3.5 year old twins. We do a full week in one sitting, just read through the pages for the week & then answer the questions out loud without writing on the worksheets. Then move on to the experiment! We’re only a few weeks in so maybe this isn’t doable in the long term, but for now it’s fun to do our big science day. We’re huge science nerds so we’re literally reading science books or watching science tv shows/documentaries etc everyday of the week.

Sounds fun! Science is a very intriguing subject area for so many kids, it's nice that tv shows and documentaries can help us continue to learn more!

We are doing sonlight science A this year, and my boys have been liking it. They especially love the Usborn science encyclopedia book with the QR code links. They love watching the videos that go along with the reading.

I have older kids in sonlight science but they do it independently and I’m thinking of doing it with my 6 and 7 year olds!!! I love the idea of books asking questions and answering questions!!! I love to expand with documentaries!!! I wanted to wait for my kindergartener to be ready for extra schooling and now she’s 1st grade and her sister is with us she’s wanting more school and science!!!

Omg, this is so helpful and perfect timing!! I’ve been researching Bookshark science for my kids!! Bookshark is the exact same, just secular. So I’m planning to combine my two younger boys who are currently 5yo and 7.5yo, but they would be 6 and 8 when we start. Would you think Level K would be too easy for a 7/8yo? Or would you think the next level up? Level K just looks so fun and I have a little FOMO about missing it… but I don’t want it to be too simple! Any thoughts? Will you be using it next year? Thanks for your insight- I so appreciate it!! ❤

Yes, Bookshark is the secular version! I think it would depend on how much science the 7/8 year old had already done, but I don't think the experiments or content overall would be too baby-ish by any means. It is "light" as I mentioned in the video--very short amount of reading scheduled per day, so that might feel extra "light" with an older child who has a longer attention span. I was impressed by and excited as we made an Archimedes screw to lift water or measured the temperature in the mini greenhouse we made. haha! One way to add challenge for a slightly older child would be to have them read the worksheets for themselves and write the answers themselves. Since my oldest was in kindergarten, I was mainly reading the worksheets to him and any sentence-long answers I would scribe for him.

Hey Rachel! Thank you for the information. We’ve been considering adding this for our K-5 year. Did you work through this after your boys completed Gentle Classical Nature Vol. 2 or simultaneously?

We used this after completing G+C Nature Vol 2 - that was what we used during the 2022-2023 school year--it was a blast!

Do you feel it would be possible to just use the experiment book, kit, and videos by themselves without the rest of the curriculum? I already purchased another science program, but the experiments look so fun in this curriculum. I’m just wondering if maybe I could just use the experiment portion for Fridays. 🤷‍♀️

Yes...although the experiment book, kit, and videos are the most expensive parts of this curriculum so depending on looking at the specific prices I might just get the bundle and have the books as well (granted...I like books, esp. science ones).

Sigh... science has been a struggle for me thus far. My kids are a gifted 8 year old girl, an on-track 5 year old boy, a busy 3 year old girl and a chill 1 year old girl. I would love to do a combined family science. (we've done apologia which was excellent for my 8 year old and went way over my 5 year old's head). I've tried a year of good and beautiful which was way too much cutting and prep work with tiny little ones. At this point i bought my 8 year old her own level 4 science book from abeka and am just doing the level 1 abeka science with my 3 and 5 year old. It's fine but there aren't any fun experiments. But also half the time my 8 year old's book suggests an experiement, I don't have all the stuff! How does a mom with many many children do this?!

Family-style can always be tough with a gifted oldest child as part of the mix. The level of their comprehension tends to be significantly advanced compared to younger siblings with the combo of being older plus giftedness. Having supplies for experiments can definitely be a big hurdle to actually doing the experiment. Home Science Tools sells lots of experiment supply kids for different science curriculums, so they are worth checking out if you think that having supplies on hand would make it a lot more doable. One option is to combine kids for the experiments or fun science activities, since those usually appeal to all ages, but not try to combine them for the actual science reading/content. I was doing this curriculum with my 5 year old and 3 year old (who turned 4 at the end of 2024) this year--the younger one loved the experiments but I know he didn't master the material and vocabulary the same way as the older one. For him, I've just been reading a great preschool science book, the Berenstain Bears Big Book of Science to give him something more on his level. So he gets to enjoy the fun of experiments but also gets to read about science that ISN'T over his head.

Just seconding the Home Science Tools recommendation! We have gotten a few of their boxes, and the expiriments have been fun, and also very well preped. This makes it way easier for me to do more expiriments. You can just grab a box for whatever age or interest and throw it on top of the other stuff you are doing 😊

@@emilyribnicky9410 Hope it helps!! I'm a momma of 4 too, and it's a lot. HST does kits for other programs, and also has their Science Unlocked boxes that are their own thing (I didn't make it clear before that was what my family has tried). I use the Science Unlocked so that we can do what subjects we want, for what time length we want 😊 Good luck!!
