Here are 5 fun facts about disc brakes:
Invention and Early Adoption: The concept of disc brakes dates back to the early 20th century, but their widespread use in automobiles began in the 1950s. British engineer Frederick William Lanchester is credited with inventing the disc brake system in 1902, but it was not until the 1950s that Jaguar Cars adopted disc brakes for their C-Type racing car, marking a significant milestone in automotive braking technology.
Braking in a Spin: Disc brakes are known not just for stopping a vehicle but also for their performance in extreme conditions. During high-speed spins or skids, disc brakes can provide better control and stopping power compared to drum brakes. This is because they are less prone to brake fade, a phenomenon where the braking efficiency decreases due to overheating.
Heat Dissipation: One of the key advantages of disc brakes is their superior heat dissipation compared to drum brakes. The design of disc brakes allows heat to dissipate more effectively, preventing brake fade and ensuring consistent braking performance. This is particularly crucial in high-performance and heavy-duty applications, such as racing or towing.
Formula 1 Influence: The adoption of disc brakes in Formula 1 racing in the 1970s played a crucial role in popularizing this braking technology. The high-performance demands of Formula 1 racing required reliable and efficient braking systems, and the success of disc brakes in this context led to their widespread use in consumer vehicles.
Disc Brake Evolution: Over the years, disc brakes have undergone various improvements and innovations. Advances include the development of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) that prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking, vented disc designs that enhance heat dissipation, and the use of composite materials to reduce weight and improve performance. These continuous innovations contribute to the efficiency and safety of modern disc brake systems.

Ty for the vid, very informative. So a rotor the same as a disc brake? I’m studying for my CDLs & learning very quickly there’s so much jargon but many of them are used interchangeably lol
