I really hate this director so much. She says dragons represent masculinity, when the Chinese dragon (and all East Asian dragons) actually represents good fortune for people, there's nothing masculine at all about them. She says there was no singing in the military (thus avoiding the movie musical), when singing is a tradition for all cultures of soldiers going off to war.

I'm getting real sick of this whole "female empowerment" movement in the media. I hate that Disney thinks they have to dumb down male counterpart characters, or remove them altogether, and then make the female characters un-explainably powerful in order to make a female protagonist look "strong". It's almost as if they're trying to say that women can't be powerful on their own, and can't make it through life without some form of handicap. As both a movie buff, and a woman, I'm insulted. Disney, if you really want to write a strong, independent adaptation of the Ballad of Hua Mulan, have her actually work to be strong and independent, instead of slapping some power on her, and calling it quits. You know, like the 1998 MULAN. Or heck, even better, actually use the ORIGINAL STORY YOU CLAIMED TO BASE THIS DUMPSTER FIRE ON. I'm done. Good night.

But then... why letting her hair loose in that scene? Aside for the fact that fighting with long hair is INCREDIBLY stupid (you risk having someone grab it and use it against you, and if there's wind/you twirl around it's going to get into your eyes), it's obvious that the hair in the scene is still associated to femininity in a markedly western fashion. I would really appreciate it if "big executives" could stop picking battles for women and minorities, because we all end up getting blamed for sh*t we didn't even ask for. No woman ever had a problem with Shang. Had he abused his power to try to get Mulan to date him, I'd see a problem but that doesn't remotely happen. And animated Mulan was fantastic because it was training and her wit that made her an equal to the male soldiers. What's the lesson in this one? The creators of these Mary Sues are nothing but weak-minded, insecure, common, hypocritical, unremarkable, unimaginative air-breathers. The Mulan I know is a representative of strength in uniqueness not cliche. Her strength is defined by her smarts where other guys are used to brute force. All her achievements were made through her guile and finesse. THIS mulan 2020 is an insult to women on another level, a compiled heap of sewage if you ask me. Classic Mulan delved deeply into demographics better than this boiling piece of garbage you call a movie. This abominable blasphemy is more of a kids movie than the original if you didn't know. All the things that make the female gender special and strong in her own way is thrown out the window in this movie by making her this godlike creature of no substance at all. Even the wonder woman movie mopped this trash heap. Like I said earlier, if this movie was named other than Mulan, it would've been a laughable acceptance. The funniest part is that only brute force is the best way these mary sue creators present their characters as "strong". Plagiarist and non unique. You want badass female characters, go see G.I. It does not feel inclusive to me at all; it does not make me feel empowered. On the contrary, because this Mulan is already a super woman from the start, I only feel alienated and at times even disgusted. @agonleed3841
@agonleed3841 3 жыл бұрын
@@jagonz70580 Mulan is not some super woman. All you're doing is following someone else's words OR you have shit critical thinking skills. Chi is ecpressely explained in the movie twice. The first is in the first few minutes. It's just the boundless energy in all living things. I'm more familiar with it's use as I've been watching kung Fu movies all my life so it's not some magical word to me. It's displayed in these movies in fantastical ways .but it's no superpower. It's just as it was explained. It's the belief of all the energy in us all. Some people tend to train themselves to benefit from it more. Take a look at Guiness biok lf world records. People who hit targets with expert precision. People who run faster than others people who do amazing trick shots you'd probably never make...but mainly you wouldn't because you don't train to. You don't train until you have the reflexes, the swiftness, the precision...and in Kung Fu movies they say...training your chi. Which is the energy that you become one with. In tune with. That gets you to better be aware of yourself and your surroundings. Compare this chi to the animated movie. Well .there is no chi. But there's a magical damn dragon and a humanoid cricket that doesn't die through all the shit it goes through. and the people are cartoons. Banking on the stupidity of people around them to not catch her fmdojg the things she does that would instsntly have a real person caught. And going against training...cause being a vet myself, you don't get to just break the rules for ingenuity. They say climb a pole or lift those buckets that's what you're doing. Not tying weights or using sticks hidden under your shirt. It's almost like you have to look past points and parts you KNOW aren't real and still get the message that's presented. Kinda like what you should be doing with this movie. You're right in the difference in HOW the message is presented. You're just wrong in which message you should be getting. I guess that's because there are songs every 20min telling you what you should be thinking and constantly reminding you which message it is. Thsts what the animated movie is like. The whole movie is a constant reminder and telling kids exactly what they should be focused on. Like a child's book vs a teen/young adult book. The teen an young adult books have more details more variety more pages and less reminders. They expect you to use your slightly more mature mind to see the mess within the story. The message isn't about being strong. It's about perseverance. In the animated movie its simplistic...cause it's for KIDS. Little kids that haven't actually been through anything and are still in a learning phase. So it's one simple message in a fun way. Life is unfair but you have to keep going....that's called perseverance. This live action isn't targeted to kids is it? It's targeted to teens. Teens and young adults should have the mental capacity and some exlerience to..like you stated.. already know life is unfair sometimes But simultaneously UNDERSTAND that Mulan's life and yours aren't the same. So you probably shouldn't be banking on a one to one match about what YOU are specifically going through. However, what do you see she's going through that you can relate to? "Well, she has chi, and sword fighting, and in the army, and...nothing I see nothing" Really? Grow up. You're a teen or young adult and don't understand to look past what you physically see and get the meaning of all this? The fact that they flat out tell you who is in EVERYTHING. But men are encouraged to be the warriors who bring honor while women are expected to simply marry and move on. Not allowing for such excitement and adventure? That she is one of those people who seek things out of her reach....she doesn't want to follow the norm. She sees another path for herself. She was given opportunity thanks to her father...like a teen who has taken classes. Like a young adult who has taken classes...and they see a future for themselves but everyone around them pressures them to go a path they don't care for. She has to persevere. She has to learn to take what she knows, what she's already learned, and use it in this opportunity given to her .or this path that she took. In the end.m.we see that if given the opportunity some people WILL do great things. .it's not about just being a woman. The fact that she is a woman is great and encouraging for women. But it, this movie, wasn't made JUST for you. Mulan was a story in Chinese culture way before the animated movie even existed. So it's very idea is for the encouragement of women. But this movie was made based on that legend but with the message to persevere. The message perseverance. Not be a strong woman. It never was. You are strong when you persevere. You are worthy of respect. You do bring honor to yourself. It is your truth if it is what you want. My younger sister.. actually my wife's sister...is in 10th grade taking college classes not just some. Like most of her curriculum. However her mother and father are weird..to me..in that they don't want her to go that path. They aren't exactly stopping her, as much as they are constantly getting in her way. They've had her playing soccer since she was a toddler. She plays on two teams one with her school and the other in recreational. And she has even traveled overseas for games. Sometimes the schedules have conflicts...the rec teams don't want a person who they fcant rely on and the program she is in for her college classes..if she makes a low GPA or misses two assignments, they cut it off. They simply don't want to be too much on her. Giving her the opportunity but not wanting to overwhelm her. SHE wants the college classes far more than the soccer games. Her parents want the soccer far more than her college classes. Figuring she can just do that later. SHE has to struggle to persevere. She has to use the skills she has been taught. She could just give up on the college program. The one she wants. I'm skipping slot...cause there were times she left to come to our house. She's cried and wanted to quit everything. My wife and I and her have argued with her mother. Intimately if she wants what she wants SHE has to make sure her grades are great. SHE has to get her studies done and her classes done in a timely manner to keep up with all the other things going on. She got a lucky break..in a manner of speaking because of this covid..but soccer is back up again around our area. She could hold herself back and follow someone else's path, or she can do what's true to her. You're old enough to understand that a story can be anything. But it means nothing if you don't understand the message. What if the story was about my sister? By YOUR logic, my cousin who wanted to be a boxer wouldn't be winning as she does cause this story about a girl persevering through school work doesn't inspire her to keep going and not letting others hold you back...because no one is getting punched in the face lol. I mean, really..how many of you cis females would be attempting to be great warriors just cause the movie doesn't show anything fantastical about the belief of chi? Seriously. If they showed a live version shot for shot...or even MORE realistic...shot for shot of just her fighting and she won...what were you going to learn and put to use? We're you going to go out and put on some armor and start swinging swords? We're you going to go to the gym more? What exactly did this movie take away from you that you felt like you would've gotten? People have been learning lessons off power rangers, iron man, Batman, Hercules and more fantastical stories but oh my God, Mulan was being theatrical with chi and that just won't do. Stop letting these insecure boys pressure you into pity do much that you have to side with them. Take this same movie, change Mulan to a man, and the plot being that he'd lower caste...and takes the place of a higher caste warrior...and everyone would be praising it for how brave he was and it would encourage boys to never let anyone tell them that they don't do something. Doesn't matter what it is. Cause it's not just about the fight in the movie. It's about the message overall. And you know it. That's essentially what this movie is. Mulan and other women are seen as lower caste. Not allowed to do certain things or get certain levels of respect. Doesn't matter what the fight is in the movie. It's about the message overall. And stop pretending Disney made this specifically to make women feel strong. It was a legend long before Disney even made the cartoon. The very existence of it from way back then was to encourage women

Not to be that guy, but actually, silk has a pretty high tensile strength. The Mongols would wear silk undershirts into battle because they would wrap around anything that pierced their armor and make removal easier, and also reduce the risk of infection. So while Mulan's wrappings would not realistically have arrested the momentum of the ninja star, they may have afforded some protection. It's still stupid, though. An arrow or maybe a spear piercing her armor I could believe, but a shuriken? Pfft.

They tried to be “empowering” in the laziest way ever. The original was empowering. It showed that women, not “only tough girl trope Mary Sue” s, can be successful in whatever they want to do. Mulan was an average girl who grows and uses her own strengths to her advantage. The original shows that both men and women can be masculine and feminine and that the stereotypical aggression associated with men isn’t the goal. The 2020 remake made it out that only women with superpowers who “man up” while being stereotypically “hot” can be successful. It’s the opposite of feminist. It is misogynistic.

Mushu is a dragon. A dragon in that culture is to have respected. Mushu was a clumsy punchline. They took it out for that reason. Not because it wasn't realistic. And they knew we wanted magic, so they gave us magic. Chi isn't a superpower. It's the flow within us all. Some people train to use it more. In wuxia..kung Fu movies, since the 70s it's been displayed in fantastical ways. Balancing on a pole.grest precision when shooting an arrow or hitting something. Etfc. You can actually say all these people in Guiness biok lf world records used chi. They became in tune with themselves to achieve whatever that Goal was. Something that would seem super human to those of us who don't. And movies exaggerate. This is a movie about Chinese legend in China with Chinese people...so they used Chinese style of movie making...a style that is fcwry popular. He honored that by leaving her in the mountains while everyone moved on so she had a moment of reflection on what happened up to that point and opted to go home and accept whatever consequences came her way. It was a sombering scene because she was suddenly alone except with Mushu, the cricket, and her horse who wanted to help in any way they could.

this is so dumb, i am Chinese and i was okay with them taking away mushu and the songs and whatnot because they were supposed to make it more realistic and have it adhere more to the original tale, which is really cool of them and to me, that's the best reason to do a remake and a great way to make a new movie that gets the nostalgia of the original but also feels like it's its own new thing. so you're not watching a largely useless remake, its an old story told in a new way for its original audience with actual value. The rest of the changes they made are so fucking dumb. again I AM CHINESE and I did not make the connection between the phoenix and femininity because of the way its portrayed in the movie. fucking ridiculous. Removing Li Shang is also ridiculous. As a feminist, the way I see it he is a character with depth and one who supports Mulan despite the fact that she is a woman and listens to her and actually shows growth when he realizes his view of female soldiers is incorrect. That's a great way to ask people with implicit and explicit biases to change. Mulan is a feminist icon, and she is one with OR WITHOUT LI SHANG. EXCEPT!! IN!! THIS SHITTYASS REMAKE!! !!NOT TO MENTION ALL THE RIDICULOUS CHANGES THEY MADE TO HER CHARACTER THAT REMOVE THE MESSAGE OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT, LIKE HOW SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO TRAIN TO FIGHT WTF!! This is coming from someone who loves disney movies. i even liked some of their remakes (although they are obviously worse), like the Cinderella one, Maleficent, the Jungle Book, Aladdin, and even the beauty and the beast (not the lion king that is just an abomination). This movie is a huge insult to the Chinese, women, feminists, and anyone who liked the original movie (even if you remove all the issues related to feminism, the movie is just...bad).

Nice break down. I believe you missed one very important subtle hint. The cartoon Mulan was about China when she was weak. Look up centuries of humiliation. The 2020 one is about a stronger and more futuristic China. Some info about about China century of humiliations. I’m from Malaysia. China has traded with Malaysia for 2000 years. In those years, they had been the world’s biggest powers many times. Never once they sent troops to take our land. Admiral Zheng He came to Malacca five times, in gigantic fleets, and a flagship eight times the size of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, Santa Maria. He could have seized Malacca easily, but he did not. In 1511, the Portuguese came. In 1642, the Dutch came. In the 18th century the British came. We were colonised by each, one after another. When China wanted spices from India, they traded with the Indians. When they wanted gems, they traded with the Persian. They didn’t take lands. The only time China expanded beyond their current borders was in Yuan Dynasty, when Genghis and his descendants Ogedei Khan, Guyuk Khan & Kublai Khan concurred China, Mid Asia and Eastern Europe. But Yuan Dynasty, although being based in China, was a part of the Mongolian Empire. Then came the Century of Humiliation. Britain smuggled opium into China to dope the population, a strategy to turn the trade deficit around, after the British could not find enough silver to pay the Qing Dynasty in their tea and porcelain trades. After the opium warehouses were burned down and ports were closed by the Chinese in ordered to curb opium, the British started the Opium War I, which China lost. Hong Kong was forced to be surrendered to the British in a peace talk (Nanjing Treaty). The British owned 90% of the opium market in China, during that time, Queen Victory was the world’s biggest drug baron. The remaining 10% was owned by American merchants from Boston. Many of Boston’s institutions were built with profit from opium. After 12 years of Nanjing Treaty, the West started getting really really greedy. The British wanted the Qing government: 1. To open the borders of China to allow goods coming in and out freely, and tax free. 2. Make opium legal in China. Insane requests, Qing government said no. The British and French, with supports from the US and Russia from behind, started Opium War II with China, which again, China lost. The Anglo-French military raided the Summer Palace, and threatened to burn down the Imperial Palace, the Qing government was forced to pay with ports, free business zones, 300,000 kilograms of silver and Kowloon was taken. Since then, China’s resources flew out freely through these business zones and ports. In the subsequent amendment to the treaties, Chinese people were sold overseas to serve as labor. In 1900, China suffered attacks by the 8-National Alliance(Japan, Russia, Britain, France, USA, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary). Innocent Chinese civilians in Peking (Beijing now) were murdered, buildings were destroyed & women were raped. The Imperial Palace was raided, and treasures ended up in museums like the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris. In late 1930s China was occupied by the Japanese in WWII. Millions of Chinese died during the occupancy. 300,000 Chinese died in Nanjing Massacre alone. Mao brought China together again from the shambles. There were peace and unity for some time. But Mao’s later reign saw sufferings and deaths from famine and power struggles. Then came Deng Xiao Ping and his infamous “black-cat and white-cat” story. His preference in pragmatism than ideologies has transformed China. This thinking allowed China to evolve all the time to adapt to the actual needs in the country, instead of rigidly bounded to ideologies. It also signified the death of Communism in actually practice in China. The current Socialism+Meritocracy+Market Economy model fits the Chinese like gloves, and it propels the uprise of China. Singapore has a similar model, and has been arguably more successful than Hong Kong, because Hong Kong being gateway to China, was riding on the economic boom in China, while Singapore had no one to gain from. In just 30 years, the CPC have moved 800 millions of people out from poverty. The rate of growth is unprecedented in human history. They have built the biggest mobile network, by far the biggest high speed rail network in the world, and they have become a behemoth in infrastructure. They made a fishing village called Shenzhen into the world’s second largest technological centre after the Silicon Valley. They are growing into a technological power house. It has the most elaborate e-commerce and cashless payment system in the world. They have launched exploration to Mars. The Chinese are living a good life and China has become one of the safest countries in the world. The level of patriotism in the country has reached an unprecedented height. For all of the achievements, the West has nothing good to say about it. China suffers from intense anti-China propagandas from the West. Western Media used the keyword “Communist” to instil fear and hatred towards China. Everything China does is negatively reported. They claimed China used slave labor in making iPhones. The truth was, Apple was the most profitable company in the world, it took most of the profit, leave some to Foxconn (a Taiwanese company) and little to the labor. They claimed China was inhuman with one-child policy. At the same time, they accused China of polluting the earth with its huge population. The fact is the Chinese consume just 30% of energy per capita compared to the US. They claimed China underwent ethnic cleansing in Xinjiang. The fact is China has a policy which priorities ethnic minorities. For a long time, the ethnic minorities were allowed to have two children and the majority Han only allowed one. The minorities are allowed a lower score for university intakes. There are 39,000 mosque in China, and 2100 in the US. China has about 3 times more mosque per muslim than the US. When terrorist attacks happened in Xinjiang, China had two choices: 1. Re-educate the Uighur extremists before they turned terrorists. 2. Let them be, after they launch attacks and killed innocent people, bomb their homes. China chose 1 to solve problem from the root and not to do killing. How the US solve terrorism? Fire missiles from battleships, drop bombs from the sky. During the pandemic, When China took extreme measures to lockdown the people, they were accused of being inhuman. When China recovered swiftly because of the extreme measures, they were accused of lying about the actual numbers. When China’s cases became so low that they could provide medical support to other countries, they were accused of politically motivated. Western Media always have reasons to bash China. Just like any country, there are irresponsible individuals from China which do bad and dirty things, but the China government overall has done very well. But I hear this comment over and over by people from the West: I like Chinese people, but the CPC is evil. What they really want is the Chinese to change the government, because the current one is too good. Fortunately China is not a multi-party democratic country, otherwise the opposition party in China will be supported by notorious NGOs (Non-Government Organization) of the USA, like the NED (National Endowment for Democracy), to topple the ruling party. The US and the British couldn’t crack Mainland China, so they work on Hong Kong. Of all the ex-British colonial countries, only the Hong Kongers were offered BNOs by the British. Because the UK would like the Hong Kongers to think they are British citizens, not Chinese. A divide-and-conquer strategy, which they often used in Color Revolutions around the world. They resort to low dirty tricks like detaining Huawei’s CFO & banning Huawei. They raised a silly trade war which benefits no one. Trade deficit always exist between a developing and a developed country. USA is like a luxury car seller who ask a farmer: why am I always buying your vegetables and you haven’t bought any of my cars? When the Chinese were making socks for the world 30 years ago, the world let it be. But when Chinese started to make high technology products, like Huawei and DJI, it caused red-alert. Because when Western and Japanese products are equal to Chinese in technologies, they could never match the Chinese in prices. First world countries want China to continue in making socks. Instead of stepping up themselves, they want to pull China down. The recent movement by the US against China has a very important background. When Libya, Iran, and China decided to ditch the US dollar in oil trades, Gaddafi’s was killed by the US, Iran was being sanctioned by the US, and now it’s China’s turn. The US has been printing money out of nothing. The only reason why the US Dollar is still widely accepted, is because it’s the only currency which oil is allowed to be traded with. The US has an agreement with Saudi that oil must be traded in US dollar ONLY. Without the petrol-dollar status, the US dollars will sink, and America will fall. Therefore anyone trying to disobey this order will be eliminated. China will soon use a gold-backed crypto-currency, the alarms in the White House go off like mad. China’s achievement has been by hard work. Not buy looting the world. I have deep sympathy for China for all the suffering, but now I feel happy for them. China is not rising, they are going back to where they belong. Good luck China. -Zeis Siez Zheng He's in Floating City: When China Dominated the Oceans kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpOjZK5mm7vLfWQ.html

I remember watching Mulan so many times as a child, because it was hands down my favourite movie. The best scene was the 'I'll make a man out of you' training montage, where she struggles to keep up at first, but then finds a way to improve through hard work and ingenuity. I genuinely loved that part the most. It's simple in the fact that, it shows you just need to work harder if you have something to make up for, and seeing this version was just... why? WHY GIVE MULAN POWERS??? That defeats the whole purpose of her character. Also was now really the best time publicity wise to make a Chinese based film? Disney sure hired a bunch of idiots to work on this, if they expected zero backlash considering what's going on around the world right now. Absolutely no tact on their end.

@Anomaly Inc Brother, you entirely missed the whole point of the witch character. She CAN'T be a soldier in the Moron army that was accepted by the Morons as a warrior... because her character only exists to be oppressed by the Morons. See, the SJWs who rewrote the story have a philosophy: oppressors are always the bad guys and the oppressed (and underdog, smaller forces) are ALWAYS the good guys. So in retelling the Mulan story, they automatically viewed the Morons as the good guys and knew that their SJW friends and target audience also would, and that if they told the story as it really goes, then making China the good guys would contradict the SJW programming and go against their established propaganda narrative. The Morons' only "crime" in the original was "opposing a larger force that oppresses women" ... and that makes them the default good guys! So the new writers HAD TO rewrite it in a way that made the Morons objectively "bad" within their philosophy's dogma. And the best way to do that was to make them ALSO oppress women. So they invented a character who exists solely to be oppressed by the Morons, in order to make them be objectively "bad" within the framework of the SJW worldview.

... false. There are plenty of SJW, who loved the original Mulan. It has nothing to do with conditioning. Especially since an invader is an invader. If anything people see the aggressor as the bad guy. Though in a way you are right as well. Historically the Chinese emperor, who build the Wall and his armies were far from being as benevolent as the movie depicted, so from a historical standpoint the good and bad wasn't as clean cut as it was in the movie. And most SJW actually do know that. After all they aren't the ones who live under the pretense that the people who look like them are automatically the good ones.
