How do F1 Wheel Covers Work?

So F1 banned wheel covers back in 2010 because they didn't improve overtaking as was intended.
So for 2022, when the entire focus of these new cars is to improve overtaking - they brought them back?
Huh? That seems bizarre - on the surface.
But today we’re gettin our air-heads on to figure out the aero wizardry that these wheel covers are doing. And why do these new ones move with the wheels - where the iconic Brawn neon ones didn’t?

those rules change make hard for normal people to get in ...(look soccer why so popular every can get it in few sec)they come like a goverment(fun police) and f it all up trying to gain a little...( if they didnt put those rules we would had under car downforce in 1980 and we would have evolved but we now doing backward tech to get forward cuz someone didn t like the visual of a car at one time ....

I'm surprised how little has been done by the teams to integrate them into their livery. Mercedes have their AMG logo, Mclaren have a splash of blue and [finally] it's revealed Alfa Romeo have something that matches the rest of their livery, rather than urban camo! Would have loved to see Williams put copper coloured covers on to match their Duracell sponsorship. And zero excuse for Alpha Tauri not to have gone white, after being the only car with white rims last year.

One of the coolest things about F1 was always the glowing brake discs. Covers eliminate that. I wish they could have made spec wheels and covers, while giving us the view to the brake discs. Remember the McLaren with the rear wheel braking? ;)

The brakes have been obscured for years with brake ducts. It’s been rarer and rarer so see glowing brakes. This is something that hasn’t been commonplace for a decade or more.

F1: increases rim size to make them more akin to what is on high performance road cars. Also F1: cover those suckers up so they look like the steelies on a 2002 golf diesel.

@@rodolfo6reyes640 They had brake ducts before. Only for the front brake ducts, the allowed diameter is increased from 278 mm to 325-330 mm. The diameter of the back brake ducts is still 275-280 mm. Therefor, I'm also wondering if the cooling is sufficient this year

Great video, really clear insight. But they still look terrible. These new cars looks superb, but would look even better if we could see the new much larger wheels, and not these hideous wheel covers. Just look at the photos of the cars being wheeled out of the trucks without the covers on, amazing. The FIA have missed a big trick here.

You can stick LED and showing team director's or F1 Driver's head rolling around. It's much cooler, future, and improve drag than open wheel. It's F1 duh

Back in 2009, I was still a new fan of F1, and I was actually under the impression that the wheel covers were part of the KERS system. 😅 It's funny to me that it took me almost 13 years to find out that they weren't.

When these cars were released first thought in my mind was "2009" There's a lot of similarities. Remember how crazy the cars looked in 2008? with all the sticky outtie bits as Brundle used to say. We had a very similar thing going on with the bargeboards on the last generation of cars. Curious to see if we'll see the same kind of shakeup 2009 had. With the previous years top contenders unable to really compete for wins.

The new cars look great overall and I'm genuinely excited for the new season to start for the first time in years. However I love a nice alloy wheel and I think the cars would look absolutely stunning without these covers. I understand the reasons for them but they don't half look odd.

I think having F1 is brilliant in making this wheel cover as a spec part to force the team not to spend money on its development while having its intended purpose of cleaning up the side and back air of the F1 car to encourage overtaking. As usual, your explanation are both insightful and brilliant and I really enjoy them.

Didn’t they get rid of them due to safety? I remember in that era there was a lot of incidents where the cover would interfere with the wheel change during the pit stops and cars would be released without the wheel being properly attached

in the wet you can see how much is lifting the air but again:)), in the wet is creating much more turbulence and lifting the humidity in front of the next cars==> less visibility for the next drivers(just a theory i think)

Would be interesting if they could've used the wheels to create a suction thru and inward to cool the brakes, then duct direct that air to the barge area for further treatment...but alas we have covers

The wheel covers make the F1 cars look like they are running around on space-saver spares. All they need is to be painted yellow with a speed rating on them and they would look perfect on any Commodore or Falcon in a Bunnings carpark doing donuts on a Friday night

Hey, heard about porpoising in the F1 testing recently, I had a question,. Indycars uses ground effect to create down force alongside wings. And they reach a much higher top speed in straights, but they never seemed to have suffered from this problem before, how and why ??

They probably did suffer it but they fixed it already. I heard that it's not really that hard to solve and all teams are expected to have fixed this before the first race. But i'm not sure

The Indycar’s downforce isn’t as ground effect reliant as these cars, so the wings still do a good amount of the work to keep the car glued down

heave damping and springs (aka 3rd springs) , along with bumpstop....problem solved. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, the 3rd springs are banned now for stupid reasons so they are most likely stuck on using stiffer corners springs and corners bumps which probably hurts corners quite bit.

I thought this actually meant covers for the tyre, like a canvas cover to keep debris off the good rubber, The thumbnail makes the covered wheel look bigger. They do use like bags on the whole wheel right?

They're also larger now for the larger wheel so should be more beneficial than previous sizes.

I think there are experiments and study on F1 wheel grip and longevity but I wonder if such data is available publicly? I wonder if there is anyone in Pirelli I can ask for some data and photos of tires after using it on some distances as I intended to do a project on the study between grip and longevity using photos of the tires.

So... are you required to run wheel covers? I could imagine a situation where a team went all-in for qualifying performance to get to the front, but without wheel covers. An aerodynamic hit that might be more than offset by making your car much harder to overtake. Dirty? Indeed, but sadly when have F1 teams ever played fair?

So i dont like the wheel covers lookswise and i would love to see the new tyres without them but if they help its okay. But what i strongly dislike also lookswise of course is this „wing“ over the front tyres. Looks like formula e or indycar for me but also if it works okay but for me its not nice looking. Excited for the new season hopefully its going to be a close one again
