How do Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Favourite (2018) get Historical Costuming so right?

When I'm asked what the best films for historical costumes are, these are always in my top 5. It's not because they are 100% accurate, but because they embody the periods they portray, whilst still remaining clear in their own artistic direction.

What are your favourite historical movie costumes? I’d love to know!

Hocus Pocus (1993). The 1693 costumes in that film are historically inaccurate abominations. But that only makes it easier to recreate them and make your own version of them. And unsurprisingly the costumes from that film are popular Halloween costumes. Since the costumes are so wildly inaccurate anyway, there is no need to be exact when remaking them.

Haven't seen either of these films but the costumes do look impressive. I watch movies and TV series set in the 17th century strictly for the costumes because the movies themselves tend to be dire.

Yes we really need much better films set in the 17th century! My favourite costumes (and they are quite accurate) for that century are The Witch (2015) and Tulip Fever (2017).

I did enjoy Tulip Fever - The Witch, not so much. The vast overwhelming majority of films set in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries are terrible! And, sadly so are most historical movies and TV shows.😒 @@sarahabendall

I've seen "Marie Antoinette", but I have yet to see "The Favorite"!

You should - it’s great! I’m currently writing about Sarah Churchill and Queen Anne, and the depiction of their relationship and personalities is pretty spot on. Especially Sarah’s… Not a woman you wanted to mess with!
