How do PSG replace Kylian Mbappe?

Kylian Mbappé is leaving PSG. Those very words were all across global news back in 2022 when the French superstar was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. However after being offered a ‘truck load’ of money to stay, Mbappe did eventually put pen to paper and sign a new one year deal. Fast forward to today and the situation is starting to look a lot similar as it was announced this week that Kylian Mbappé will be leaving PSG (again). Ayo Akinwolere is joined by French football writer and broadcaster Tom Williams and The Athletic's Carl Anka to discuss this recent bombshell.
The main question about this whole ordeal seems to be, where Mbappe will go now? After allegedly turning down over $700 million from Saudi side, Al Hilal. This new quest that the Frenchman finds him on is very clearly in search for silverware, both personal and for club. Real Madrid are the bookies favourite to get his signature, but will Florentino Pérez be left with egg on his face for a second time?
The panel also assess what options will be open to PSG in the transfer market, with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Frenkie De Jong and Rafael Leao all being linked with Luis Enrique's side following Mbappe's decision.

PSG fan since pre-Qatari era here: we don’t need any replacements for Mbappe. Lenny Yoro and maybe a few other Ligue 1 stand out, off load some dead weight, and that’s it.

How Ancellotti sorts it out so that he keeps all his forwards happy with Mbappe coming in will be interesting, particularly with Endrick also coming in. He may go back to a proper 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 to get the players in. Time will tell.

Mbappe doesn’t want to play centrally alone and Vini plays left so I think the diamond change was to trial a system to have both Mbappe and Vini up top with Rodrygo as the 3rd choice and a traditional 9 as the 4th like Joselu, Endrick might take a few years to come through similar to Rodrygo or he might flop like Reiner. I see them playing some variation that allows Mbappe to play alongside someone.

I'd agree with Carl and say PSG don't need a direct replacement for Mbappe but picking up Todibo or Kounde plus maybe Kephren Thuram would make them very solid with an exciting, young attack. I feelnlike Ligue 1 needs to market itself as 'tomorrow's superstars today' - like the current France team is probably the deepest in the world and has 8 Ligue 1 players, plus almost the whole team came through Ligue 1. It's a great league for young players, but also wayward stars resurrecting their careers. It's not the superstar destination that the Premier league or la liga is and is even behind the Bundesliga and Serie A in that regard but it has a vibrancy - outwith PSGs dominance at the tip - that a lot of others don't.

PSG are actually doing exactly that , they are heavily linked with the next Raphael Varane in Lenny Yoro from Lille . They are looking at players in midfield like a Frenkie De Jong or Gavi . And then in attack they are planning on bringing in Osimhen to replace Mbappe . And Ligue 1 markets itself as ‘the ligue of talents’ so something similar to what you said

Furthermore did you know that oil isn't made from "fossils" it's actually made from pressure like diamonds, it's actually scientifically possible to manufacture oil (if you had the tech).

They don’t replace him. Not in footballing terms or marketing or advertising or strategic, institutional development. Mbappe is a generational talent and French (mixed ethnicity I know but he plays for Les Bleus). They could not have asked for a better player to build around…or a better time to do it…and yet they still failed. Incredible.

PSG should buy 3 world class midfielders before they even think about buying forwards. Midfield is there biggest issue. They have more than capable defenders.

Already have their future MF now with WZE, Urgarte, Vitinha, Gabriel Moscardo, Lee, Xavi simons. They only maybe only need MF a little older for experience but the MF is fine for many yrs to come

Why would they block the first youngster they are giving a chance to in Zaire Emery… They definitely need 1 maybe 2 if the right player is available but Ruiz is underrated and nice for an Enrique team and Ugarte is still a project there. Marquinhos has dropped off, Kimpembe is MIA and they are using Pereira who is a midfielder at CB, they definitely need a CB and ideally one who will lead the back line like Thiago Silva did for years. People underate the influence of dropping a top top cb into the back line does. Take Dias out of City’s back line and they always look shaky despite the talent of the cbs that are playing, same as VVD at Liverpool, and Saliba is starting to become at Arsenal.

Then reason why I said they need q experienced MF is to have a immediate impact who would played alongside WZE and Vithina. Kimpembe isn't MIA he had a serious injury last season. That's why the club bought Lucas Beraldo top rated young CB from Brasil. Marquinhos has had a good so far as well

The best part of all this will be when he finally leaves and Nassar Al-Kelaifi makes a post or gives an interview talking about how Madrid always steal the best players and how unfair it is all while he is employed by UEFA as a member of ECA and has been allowed to dump foreign funds into his club. What this means for the spectacle of the game matters far less than what it means politically.

It's not so much about 'afford' - Salah got his big money contract. Liverpool don't pay high wages until you earn them through achievement while at the club. The same reason they wouldn't match the 350k Bellingham is getting at RM. Mind you, Bellingham might still have gone to RM if they had, but turning down Real and 50-70% more money? Fact is, if you want to play football Liverpool is a fantastic place to do that. If you want to become 'a brand' and be in with a chance at Golden Ball Z, you go Madrid (or Barca before they became a complete basket case). As a Liverpool supporter, I'm good with that, even if it means we lose out on the odd league title and CL. I don't want my club to become a celebrity circus or we might as well sign Jordan (the one with the big t-ts). Mbappe is a fantastic player, but we won't know exactly how good he is until he plays in a top league. Beyond that, everything we've heard about him and his dealings suggests he's got a suitcase of drama he brings with him everywhere he goes and that just doesn't fit the ethos of Liverpool Football Club (note the *Football Club*, not 'a lifestyle brand')

Klopp has a "no dickhead " rules about players joining apparently. ..... Will be interesting see how Mbappe plays for Real as center forward... Not his favorite pastime...

@@nigl2807I'm sure Don Carlo will find a way to make it work. If there's a manager in the game who can build an all-conquering side that barely presses, it's him. What I'm not sure about is what Mbappe's numbers will look like in a more competitive league and sans Modric. My overarching point is that Mbappe has Real Madrid player written all over him. Fantastic player, but not a Liverpool player. I'm sure RM fans are quite happy with their club being what it is, and there's no reason they shouldn't be, but I enjoy Liverpool being what *we* are. It's hard enough to relate to footballers in the modern age, if Liverpool turned into a soap opera I don't think our support would enjoy it.
