Ships use a system called Navtex to get weather forecasts at sea. Navtex forms part of the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress & Safety System), and is the official way for ships to receive their weather updates. In this video we take a look at Navtex, and look at what the forecast looks like. We use the UK's Shipping Forecast as our example.

I'm not sure if you have time to read all of these comments, but if I think it'd be really interesting if one day you made a video about the key differences between 'coastal' and 'deep sea' vessels and procedures (please somebody correct me if I am using incorrect terminology here!). Weather fax. Very cumbersome to work with. One had to use HF/MF radio at the exact time a weather station broadcasted weather information. One had to use a number of books to find out which station to tune in to. If successful however, one was granted a print out on thermal paper of a weather chart. So, this made it vitally important to do this at least once a day in order to note the development of the weather.

1) Lower fees to register the ship. 2) Lower standards to meet for inspections ( both mean lower costs ) Panama, a special case. You want to take your container ship through the Panama Canal, scheduling and fees are very costly, unless you are a Panamanian registered ship. Faster to get through the queue, lowered fees for transit. The Panamanian Government and Canal Authority ( 2 distinct groupings ) already have a fair amount from you for the registration, so they speed passage and a slight reduction in transit fees. A 27 foot sailboat cost the owners near 3,000 US to transit and they were in queue for the transit for 6 weeks. a post-panamax container ship costs into the millions.

I have Heard that Magnetical north is used as reference instead of grographical north is that true.
@spavliskojr
@spavliskojr 2 жыл бұрын
@@hchskxnbcj Its true- Aircraft use a magnetic compass just like a ship has. A pilot navigates using magnetic north as a reference, but adds or subtracts a local deviation to compensate to get true north. From Wikipedia: "The primary instrument of navigation is the magnetic compass. The needle or card aligns itself to magnetic north, which does not coincide with true north, so the pilot must also allow for this, called the magnetic variation (or declination). The variation that applies locally is also shown on the flight map. Once the pilot has calculated the actual headings required, the next step is to calculate the flight times for each leg. This is necessary to perform accurate dead reckoning. The pilot also needs to take into account the slower initial airspeed during climb to calculate the time to top of climb. It is also helpful to calculate the top of descent, or the point at which the pilot would plan to commence the descent for landing."

In larger and more remote ocean areas (A3 and A4), INMARSAT-C (International Maritime Satellite System - C) and NBDP (Narrowband Direct Printing) become the standard way of receiving the same information as NAVTEX. Keeping in mind that A3 and A4 cover most of the world's ocean area, they are very widely used and extremely important. While INMARSAT-C and NBDP are used for the same information as NAVTEX, they also have other services they provide. Therefore, rather than dividing it into numbers, it is divided into areas around the globe. Most these days are done automatically, with manual inputs for future reference. The NAVTEX information, within INMARSAT-C and NBDP, is called MSI, or Maritime Safety Information.

Navtex is fine but there is an older and in my opinion better way of getting weather information and that is the weather fax . It works like an ordinary fax machine but the signals are transmitted by designated radio stations. On this machine you will get a graphic display printed (burned) on a piece of paper where you can see various weather and sea information for the area of interest. Sometimes these charts could be difficult to read due to bad radio signals but most of the time they were ok. In the later years we are getting weather information via satellite and could access this information at any time. This is important when a hurricane/ typhoon is in the vicinity. These storms can change speed and direction at any time so it is important to follow the development all the time. In 1957 a German school ship was lost in the hurricane Carrie. The sail ship did everything correct according to the book but the hurricane followed a strange path and altered speed and direction several times. With the equipment and updated weather information we can receive today this accident would probably been avoided.🤠

I was on the USN ship and got to go to their meteorology center onboard. They had a full radar setup that was able to create a decent sized picture, and communicated with and shared data with other ships and even US coastal NOAA stations to create a detailed radar map of those areas of the ocean. They already had the ability to share information with other ships as it’s necessary for planning and wartime logistics, but many shipping vessels don’t really have much of an incentive to spend thousands of dollars on advanced radar and satellite communications. Large ships with crews >200-300 men may have the option to hire people to interpret radar and create forecasts, but shipping companies don’t normally like to hire skilled meteorologists to operate radar systems onboard.
